Many years ago, I committed the error of buying a foundation of pink undertone thinking that it would complement my skin colour. Lucky I was able to realise rather quickly that it didn’t suit me as it made my face look highly unnatural.
These days, I find yellow-based foundation more suitable as this shade makes my face look more natural. I also have more choices now, compared to previously. Thanks to more yellow-based foundations from renowned brands like Mac and Bobbi Brown who understand that Asian skin tends to have more yellow undertones.
Besides makeup foundation, the best shade of concealer for Asian skin and most skin tone is also yellow-based because yellow is the only tone that appears naturally on human skin and hence, better able to conceal dark eye circles, imperfections, unsightly blemishes and even redness.
At the end of the day, remember your makeup should look as natural as possible and help bring out your best. So look for a base that is predominantly yellow-based, without being too warm, orangey or pinkish.

Even when I go for yellow-based tones, I find some powders oxidise badly on me, making me look darker than I really am so sometimes, I tend to also go one shade lighter. Do you have this problem?
DR: I don’t have that problem. While the professional advice is to go for a shade lighter, usually I try to go for one that is as close to my skin colour as possible as one shade lighter can make me look whiter and unnatural.
