If you haven’t already heard, using mineral makeup is one of the newest trends and many dermatologists,  skincare experts and leading esthetician schools have been recommending such natural cosmetics from foundations, eye shadows to lipsticks.

Jane Iredale and Bare Escentuals i.d. bareMinerals are two of the more well-known mineral makeups out there. But there are many others, including some established brand names like Urban Decay and L’Oreal that have added mineral makeup to their product lists.

While ingredients vary, most of them claim to be good for the skin because they’re made from minerals and less harmful ingredients, thus allowing women to have great looking skin without causing the damage associated with traditional cosmetics such as clogged pores, trapped bacterias and no SPF protection.  Mineral makeup doesn’t support bacteria well, so it is less easily contaminated than commercial brands and its innate gentleness works well for those with skin allergies or problems such as eczema, extra sensitive, or irritated skin.

So what exactly is mineral makeup?

Mineral makeup is made from minerals and inorganic pigments that exist in nature and contains no chemical preservatives like mineral oil found in traditional cosmetics.  Such makeup consists of overlapping crystals that form a filter that allows the skin to breathe and naturally protects it from air-borne pollutants.  In addition, because their ingredients reflect light, this also reduces the appearances of lines and wrinkles.

Another very important benefit of this type of makeup is it has a natural SPF of up to 20 with its natural sunscreens like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

The makeup also stays on extremely well and they rarely need a touch-up during the day.  Plus because these silky-feeling powders are water resistant, they won’t run even during the most strenuous exercise.   Additionally, people with acne or rosacea have also said that mineral makeup gave them complete coverage.

However, despite the benefits of mineral makeup, it should also be known that some of these mineral makeup may contain ingredients like gold, copper and iron which are allergens to some people.  In addition, because mineral makeups are highly light-reflective, a woman using such makeup may appear too washed out during a photography.
