I wanted to review Burt’s Bees Peppermint Foot Lotion but instead found something more interesting at their website. 

Burt’s Bees has gone ahead to set The Natural Standard, where they’re working with the industry to develop a universally recognized and regulated standard on products labeled Natural.  According to what they’re saying at The Greater Good, all products that are labeled “Natural” must:

• Be made with at least 95% truly natural ingredients.
• Contain no ingredients with any potential suspected human health risks.
• Use no processes that significantly or adversely alter the purity/effect of the natural ingredients.

Why is this worth highlighting? 

Because most people believed that products that are labelled as natural must contain 95% - 100% of natural ingredients which ISN’T always the case.  Most products contain less than 95% and some have as little as 5% and yet label themselves as such, which is hugely misleading.  In addition, ingredients are only one part of what makes a product natural. Burt’s Bees also state that how those ingredients are processed is equally important.

In fact, this applies to organic skincare products as well because a product can contain 70% of organic ingredients but 30% of harmful ingredients and still be certified as organic. 

Therefore, knowing how to read product labels is important so as to avoid these damaging ingredients:

• Parabens
• Sulfates (Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate) 
• Chemical Sunscreens (Parsol 1789/Oxybenzone)  
• Petro Chemicals (Petrolatum/Mineral Oil/Paraffin) 
• Glycols
• Pthalates 
• PEGs or PPGs 
• DEA/TEA 
• Formaldehyde Donors
• 1, 4-Dioxanes

Well, I’m still learning this.  While I try not to be overly paranoid, I’m also aware that our skin is our largest organ, and what we put on it gets absorbed into our body.  So I’m switching to products that are more beneficial in the long run.  Products like those from Burt’s Bees.  

As a matter of fact, I’m a happy Burt’s Bees convert and in time to come, I’ll definitely be loading up more of their stuff.  They’re are definitely a company committed to providing consumers with the best natural products.  Not only have they pledged to formulate only safe products under the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics, they’re now leading the pack to set the highest industry natural standard.  Way to go Burt’s Bees!
