Intense Pulse Light Therapy

Sunday, 1 July 2007

I’m seriously considering taking up Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Photorejuvenation Therapy for my face again, after a lapse of more than half a year.  I think it might help to tighten my enlarged pores.

It was a mistake on my part to have stopped the treatment really.  I had seen some glowing results but after a year on the program, the results became consistent and I became bored.  My skin wasn’t getting better than it already was so I thought perhaps I should just save my moolah and try out new products instead.  Moreover, I hated going for the sessions each time and my fave doc is no longer available.

For those who don’t know, IPL is a non-invasive skin restoration treatment that erases the damage inflicted on your skin from sun, aging and biological factors. The technology supplies a broad spectrum of light which reaches deep down within the skin, targeting pigment and vascular imperfections to deliver a more even skin color and texture.  Though the results are not as dramatic as laser treatment,  the advantage of IPL therapy is its minimal downtime.

So why do I dislike going for the treatments despite the benefits it delivers?

Well, the procedure is uncomfortable.  In fact, I wrote about my experience before but here’s an extract describing what actually goes on during the session from the entry:

After waiting a full one hour, the doctor finally attended to me. We did a minute of small chat and then I proceeded to lie down. After putting on protective eyewear and cold gel on my face, the doctor started to zap at the different parts of my face using the IPL hand piece. I felt heat all over my face, which got particularly intense at the pigmented spots. My body naturally jerked when light was delivered near to the skin surface around my eyes and nose.

I have to admit that the procedure was uncomfortable. In fact I prayed for it to be over ASAP. Fortunately IPL treatment is speedy. The entire zapping took no more than 5 minutes. After which the nurse cleansed the gel off my face and applied sunblock to it. I got up, paid and left. My face still smarting from the heat.

My IPL was done at Medical Aesthetics which is part of the Central Clinic and Surgery at Block 681 Hougang Avenue 8 #01-831.  The doctor who performed the procedure for me was Dr Eugene Yeo and he was also the same doctor who did the laser treatment for me.  However, he’s no longer there.  Instead, it’s a Dr Robert Ong now and those interested can contact Medical Aesthetics at Tel: 6387-6965.  I understand they also have a branch at Yishun.

Once you are into IPL, you must keep doing it. A few years back, I went for IPL treatment at Bella to remove underarms hair. It worked fairly well for a while but now I see the hairs are making a comeback.

DR: Well, nothing is permanent unfortunately…
