Not all natural lipsticks are lead-free

Further to my earlier post about lead found in many leading brand name lipsticks, I’ll like to bring your attention to the list of lipsticks containing lead obtained from safecosmetics.org. If you think that all natural lipsticks are lead-free, take a look at this.
Do you see what I see here? What is Burt’s Bees lip shimmer doing on this list of lipsticks with detectable levels of lead, even if it is low at 0.1? This is contrary to their company’s values which promotes truly natural products are the most effective and safest to maximize our well-being. And the fact that we now know that lead-free lipstick is possible, this makes the information even more disturbing to me.
Many women are now very alarmed by the latest news and looking for lead-free lipsticks. But this seems a little daunting especially now that I’m seeing lipstick from a leading natural brand containing lead.
In addition, let’s take a look at the other two list of lipsticks compiled by safecosmetics.org.
From the list, it does look like the redder or darker the lipstick color, the higher are its chances of containing lead. Does this mean we should settle for lighter shades like pink or mauve or even just use lipgloss?
At the moment, I don’t see any clear indications but we definitely need some answers here. Will someone stand up and tell us please?

Oh dear this is worrying especially when I don’t look good in pinks! I guess it doesn’t build up as much if we don’t wear darker shades so often?
ParisB: The lead is found either in the colorant or from the by-products but it does seems like the red and dark shades are more dangerous. I suppose a lot of this also depends on yourself, how much risk you want to take or are willing to be exposed to. Some pple are clearly not concerned about this and will continue to buy even after reading this. For me, if I can pick a lead-free, I rather do that. Moreoever I’ve read that long term usage of some of these lipsticks with lead can make the lips look dark.

I just spent the better part of my day researching lipsticks, looking for safe reds. Unfortunately, even the lead-free varieties I found have other issues, all in the pigmentation. The one 100% safe brand I could locate is a UK brand called Sante cosmetics.

Ann: If you switch now, still not too late. And there are those who says that the lead is not altogether that harmful when compared to other things we ingest. But of course, it’s better to be an informed consumer and play it safe if we know…

The key is that most absolute lead and toxin-free lipsticks are only available in Europe. However, given how easy it is to purchase anything internationally these days, it might not be such a restrictive issue.

I’ve been wearing red lipstick for the longest time. I have used a few of the lipstick listed e.g love that red & bed of roses(revlon), true red & classic wine (l’oreal). Whic brand are safe to use especially with a certain budget in mind? I don’t like pink lippy ‘cos I have stained yellow teeth!!!

First, kids dying from lead in toys. Now, they find high levels of lead in lipsticks. What’s next – lead in food? Are women going to start dying now too from using lipstick too much?

Unfortunately, one of the major concerns that the corporations have is meeting their bottom line, or in other words, making profit – lots and lots of it, even if it means sacrificing people’s health and well being.
Unknowingly or knowingly, willingly or unwillingly, corporations continue to make all kinds of unsafe products for us to use and consume, and even containing substances that can seriously affect our health and well being.

Brenda: Not completely lead free but with less than 0.02 ppm lead. See the list above, 13 of them.
