Brazilian wax to keep the nether region tidy

Being in Asia, it’s impossible to miss reading about the Edison Chen scandal mania that is so riveting within the Asian celebrity scene currently especially with the hundreds of photos that are out there on the Net.  Some bits of the information are so hilarious, like someone who commented why Edison would enjoy women who looked like goats from their waist down.  The women, in particular Cecilia Cheung and Gillian Chung were lambasted not for the racy pictures, but for the fact that they didn’t go for Brazilian Waxes to keep their nether region clean and tidy.  And this got me really curious.  Is Brazilian wax the norm now?

So out of curiosity, I visited various forums in Singapore to find out about the Brazilian Wax market here and was surprised to learn that it’s actually getting popular with the girls.   In fact, many who have done it said they got addicted because of the hygiene and aesthetic factors, especially the freedom to wear even the most revealing swimwear and lingerie.  Some were actually getting waxed before their wedding day or just to give their partner a surprise because it apparently enhances their sexual experience. I imagine many would have done it yesterday or the day before as a Valentine’s special?

So what really happens at a Brazilian wax session?  Like a facial, the whole act is conducted in a private room of course.  Because you only need about a quarter inch of hair for the wax to grab onto, your waxer will start by trimming your pubic hair to the right length. The waxer will dip a waxing stick into a pot of hot wax and then spread it onto your skin and hair. She will then apply a cloth strip over the still warm wax, pressing firmly so the cloth will adhere to the hair and skin. When the wax has cooled, she will pull the strip off, in the opposite direction of your hair growth, so that all the hair will be ripped out by the root.  *ouch*  Lotion will be applied over the area to soothe the soreness but expect slight bleeding.

The entire process should take about 10 to 15 minutes depending on your waxer but I learnt that the faster it is, the less discomfort there is.  And if there are any stray hairs, they will be tweezed out.  Waxing usually starts in the front and moves toward the back.  Contrary to what has been written, it appears that you do not have to move around in any odd positions to get waxed.

Popular places for Brazilian Wax in Singapore are Spa Haven, Strip, Honey Pot Wax Boutique & Fingerwork (Tel: 6327 5967).  Some of them are even offering painless waxes and charges vary from S$30 to S$60, depending on the availability of special promotions too.  You should also take note to avoid going for a Brazilian Wax a week before your period as the area could be too sensitive and becomes awfully sore afterwards.  Another consideration is that the waxing sticks used by these salons ought to be disposable for hygiene sake.  In addition, a good therapist will ensure minimum ingrown hair.

Pubic hair will grow in about 3 weeks but in between, there could be some itching.  However, most of the ladies indicated that the new hair are finer and not as thick.

So ladies, have you done a Brazilian wax before and if yes, how was your experience?

Erm… ouch! No guts to try ?

ParisB: Me too. But after reading what the girls said, I am kind of tempted. But then again, it serves no purpose for me. Haha…

  2. Lana says:

Gosh – it’s hard to be a woman. I get lazy and don’t shave my legs. And if I’m single, I don’t shave at all. LOL.

Lana: I can totally understand cos I’m like that too. I only have time to take care of my face… ?

    Hello,

First time leaving a comment here. The women in the pictures are.. well.. quite on the very very hairy side imo.

Anyhow.. It makes such a difference who you go to for a brazilian wax. I didn’t mind the pain (high tolerance), but it was the ingrown hair and the itching that turned me off from getting waxes. However, a while ago a special occasion came up, so I searched around for a good place near me, went there, and guess what? No in-grown hair or itchiness.

It makes such a big difference who you go to!!!

Gloria: Hey, welcome here! Glad you had a good experience. And you’re so right. I read from the forum that the therapists make a lot of difference to the pain factor, as well as how well the area is being waxed.

  4. fashionasia says:

    erRrr..expect bleeding somemore?? ouch!!……
i oso no guts to try..hehe…and i dont see the need for extra maintenance……..armpit hair n legs are enough of a chore!

ps.only do it if u wanna be main star of some sex video…kekekeke

fashionasia: Haha…do it for the sake of sex video? Sounds kinky! But those girls didn’t know better, otherwise, they would have gone for brazilian waxing I’m sure.

  5. Seana says:

i have had a good and bad experience. the good one was $50 and at a salon by the person who does my eyebrow waxes. the bad one was $40 (but i got it for free) and was done by some lady in a nail salon. i will say that i have first hand experience that the more it costs the better it will be. the bad one left me feeling sore and some skin was ripped off. after the good one, i was good within 15 minutes, with no pain. after the bad one, i told the lady how terrible and uncomfortable it was. during the good one, i felt so comfortable and almost painless.

Seana: Oh gosh, the bad one really sound bad…skin ripped off? Ouch ouch ouch! But you’re right, I’ve heard that the pain factor really depends on the person doing the job.

  6. studyabroad says:

Seana- where did you get the good one? I’m definitely a fan of Brazilian waxes. It’ll hurt while it’s being done, but if it’s good it won’t hurt for long after and I generally find that they last a really long time. I’m new to Singapore and am looking for a good salon here!

  7. Valerie says:

Brazilian waxes dont hurt that much its definetely worth it. Ive always had good experiences until two days ago! I went to a cheaper place and the lady ended up ripping skin off….Now I have bits of skin missing and my whole area is red and swollen!! I cant even wear underwear! But every other time, Ive never felt pain, never had ingrowns or skin ripped off. Usually they should use the wax that can just be peeled off not the strips as these actually rip skin off. And yes the nmore expensive the better.

Valerie: So it’s true…the more expensive the better in this context.

  8. Rita says:

I love being hairless so much, I not only go for usual sessions of Brazilian Waxing, but included are my waxing staples…
    Full-face
    Full Arms
    Underarms
    Full legs
    Tummy
I’ve been asked to try IPL since I spend so much in my quest for hairlessness.
However, a very good friend advised me not to, as I’m dark, and dark-skinned Asians are more prone to scarring, and keloids.
Another of my waxing therapist, tested out a tiny bit of IPL treatment on me.
It hurt like hell, and it hurt for two whole weeks.
So far, nothing beats waxing, for me.

Rita: Hmmm…I did read about girls who said they’re addicted to it. Sounds very interesting to me. But I haven’t pluck up enough courage to give it a trial.

  9. Debbie says:

Have swear by Brazilian and doing it regularly for the past few years. Neat and hygienic. My husband loves it and it really perked up our sex lives. His comment: “A bushy one is a real turn-off. Yvonne my regular therapist at Visage Salon is really good.

Debbie: Interesting! Now I know who to go to if I ever want to do it.

  10. Stacy says:

Ok…. I had an experience today that I am having tears over… I had a bikini (almost brazilian) wax a few weeks ago… loved it .. glad I did it.. but today I went and decided to have it all off… well I freaked… I too, had skin ripped off… I am still bleeding and not sure what to put there.. I have to wear a pad and can barely walk… should I take a cool bath? I don’t want an infection there… I’m freaking out.. I called my gyno, but had to leave a message.. .HELP!

  11. omg says:

omg stacy..poor dear.that sounds painful..crap, some people should be careful. ive been planning Brazilian waxes for the longest time, but im kinda scared after reading what some of you have commented..skin? i have a low tolerance 2 pain…..

omg: If you really want to do it, it’s best to go through recommendations and find out who is skilful at these. Some the experiences are scary I agree…

  12. Lena says:

i couldn’t stand the shaving and waxing anymore. i’ve been trying laser hair removal and it’s fantastic.

Lena: It’s painless? And how long does it last?

  13. fwy says:

Waxing is very popular. However, after trying 2 sessions, I found them rather painful for me. I opt for IPL instead as it is less painful & the effect is more lasting.

  14. skin torn says:

SKIN TORN OFF MY FACE from waxing @ a popular waxing salon in WHEELOCK PLACE!!!!!!!
I just had the most unpleasant experience in a beauty service. And it was right before Chinese New Year too… blimey*

The wound was the length & breadth of a thumb, wet with pus & smarting. I cried like hell and ran around trying to hide my face after the incident, waiting for the wound to heal. I’ve done waxing on my face before but never had this problem. Something was done wrong.

Just feeling a lil’ alone in this unpleasant situation and thought I could share the incident with the gurls and to warn that no matter how much ‘quality’ beuaty services preach in their mantra, mishaps can happen due to human/ product err.

skin torn: I don’t think I get it. Did you mean you did a brazillian wax on your face?
