Use under-eye concealer to look younger

Concealing under eye darkness

Makeup for me is not so much to look prettier, but rather, to look younger.  Hence, part of the process involves concealing.  To tell you the truth, I didn’t pay much attention to concealing my under-eye dark circles until recent years.  But as soon as I did, I realized the amazing effect it had.  It helped me to look more awake and much fresher!  At least I no longer have the problem of people remarking that I constantly look tired.

I hope the picture above does some justice to what I’ve stated.  As you can see, the first picture shows me without any concealer.  Second picture is where I’ve dabbed on some powder concealer.  The last one is where I have my foundation layered on top of my concealer.

At the moment, I alternate between YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch and Everyday Minerals Multi-tasking Concealer, depending on my fancy.  I’ve been applying the concealer not just under my eyes but around it, particularly on the hollow sides of my nose (the spot next to the eye socket) because I noticed that the sides were rather dark as well.   What I didn’t know until I read Bobbi Brown’s Living Beauty is that doing so actually helps to open up our eyes and make them look brighter.

I was also glad to find out from Bobbi Brown that we shouldn’t line our lower lash line or apply mascara to the lower lashes because that would draw more attention to our bad under-eye dark circles.  I don’t do both so that works in my favor.

And according to Bobbi Brown, the best way to brighten up extremely dark under-eye dark circles is to start with a pink or peach toned corrector, then layer on with a yellow-toned concealer.  She also suggested to keep the focus on the upper part of the eyes.

Maybe I’ll experiment with Benefit Eye Bright which is pink and see if it works with my current concealer.  If it does, I’ll report back again.

Nice article. I’m always trying different things for the under-eye circles. The idea of putting a yellow-toned concealer on top of a peach tone sounds great – going to try that one today.

Suzann: Hope it works for you. I’ll be trying out something this week.

I never used concealer until relatively recently too. Now I can’t do without. I’m using Make Up For Ever’s Lift Concealer. Been wanting to try YSL but its pretty ex ?

ParisB: Same here! Once you’ve seen the effects, you can’t go without concealing again…YSL is okay, but I find it overrated for the price.

I have eyes bag and never used of concealer before. But now I am seriously to think to buy a concealer. Have you tried bobbi brown concealer? I heard many rave of it.

nicole: I haven’t tried bobbi brown’s concealer but have heard good things as well. Maybe you want to check up Makeupalley to read the reviews? Dior Diorskin Sculpt Concealer is also not bad cos it’s got the same quality as its predecessor which I’ve used and liked.

  4. nicole says:

Thanks! I will test the dior’s one since I am going to buy foundation from dior.

  5. Jane says:

You should try applying Bobbi Brown’s Corrector first before applying concealer. It gives better coverage. ?

Jane: Hey thanks for the tip! I haven’t got a chance to try BB’s corrector but I did use a pink one from another brand and it does work better with the concealer for my under-eye circles.

Hi, how would you recommend for someone like me with eye bag on one eye and needs concealing. contemplating to purchase either

    • YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch
    • Christian Dior Hydrating Concealer

    thanks

Ivy: YSL is more like a highlighter. I say Christian Dior is good but this particular concealer has been replaced by their Diorskin Sculpt Concealer. It seems to be the same quality.

    AMAZING change!
I’m 26 and I started using concealer a couple of years ago since the purple circles under my eyes just wouldn’t go (thank God I don’t have bags under my eyes!), and yeah, I noticed the effect it has on my appeareance, I commonly don’t use much make-up, just concealer, eyeliner and lip-gloss, and people always think that I’m between 17 and 19 years old, it also has to do with the fact that I weigh 90 lbs and I’m 5’0 mostly haha, but definitely the light make up works wonders!

Ohnoyoudidnt: Yeah, concealers are great. It makes one look a lot more alert and hence, younger too. It’s something I can’t do without these days.

hye, love your post on under eyes concealer…i like to try it but its a lil bit tricky coz of my dark brown skin color..i am so blank when comes to pick the right color..any opinion frm u…?

Farah: Hmm…a little hard without seeing the actual color. I think the best is to ask for advice at the counter if you’re purchasing a concealer or foundation. The counter staff should be in the best position to help you by testing colors on you. If you’re buying online, you can also ask them for help by writing to them and describing your skin shades or even better, attach a picture. That’s what I do when I’m not sure.

    thanks for the reply…
i just bought a foundation n my skin fall into tan skintone..on silky girl foundation..so do yellow based concealer work best for me?..one more..are the usual concealer different with under eye concealer…?

Farah: Usual concealer will do! Yellow based should work for dark circles but those with greenish tone is also suitable.

hi there =) reading your blog entry on under eye concealers was a real eye opener for me (no pun intended). i was wondering what foundation u used in your pictures as it looked so natural (barely there sort of look). i’ve bought and used quite a number of foundations in the past and all made it look so obvious that i was wearing foundation … could it be that my application technique is wrong?

Carol: I recall I used a mineral foundation in that picture but I don’t remember which one. I’m also using an organic makeup under Zuii Organics and that’s my current favorite. Look under my category on makeup for the review. I use a brush as opposed to a sponge for application; I find that more natural.

  12. Carol says:

Thank you so much for the prompt reply. Will definitely check out your makeup category for the review =)

    Carol: You’re welcome! ?

I love this post! Concealer has always been a necessity for me. It has always helped with having a lack of sleep which shows in my face. I’m still trying to find the best one for me considering that I have very fair skin.
