Review: Nioxin Root Lifter for fine thin hair
Monday, 23 June 2008It’s always good to make a friend out of your hairstylist. For me, it means extra special care for my unique hair needs. Like this - Nioxin Volumizing Reflectives Root Lifter - a weightless volumizing hairspray that is supposed to give my fine limp hair the extra volume it needs.
What is it?
Nioxin Volumizing Reflectives Root Lifter is a hairspray that is designed to provide extra support, hold and volume to the root of fine thin hair without sticky resins or drying alcohol using exclusive Cuticle Support Technology (CST).
Ingredients:
Water, Octylacrylamide/Acrylates/Butylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer, Wheat Amino Acids, Glycoproteins, Cystine bis-PG-Propyl Silanetriol, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride, Benzophenone-4, Melanin, Polyquaternium-10, Daucus Carota Sativa, Retinyl Palmitate, Ascorbic Acid Polypeptide, Tocopheryl Acetate Polypeptide, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Propylene Glycol, Triethanolamine, Ammonium Hydroxide, Diazolidinyl Urea, Methyparaben, Propylparaben, Parfum/Fragrance
What does it do?
Nioxin BioAMP and glyco-proteins add dimension from inside the hair shaft and cystine amino acids repair damaged cuticle providing volume, strength, support and protection to the hair shaft. It also works at the molecular level to provide the hair with moisture-binding conditioning and style memory, strengthening the damaged cuticle for better shine, volume and definition. What’s also good about this volumizer is that it contains no PVP film formers and hence, provides extra-hold giving exceptional shine without adding virtually any weight or build-up on the scalp and hair. In addition, it is free of alcohol and thus doesn’t dry out the hair or scalp with continuous usage.
How do you use it?
You’re supposed to spray directly at the root area of wet or dry pre-combed hair from a distance of about 10 inch away. If used on wet hair after shampooing, you are to blow dry your hair afterwards with your hands first. Even though you don’t get sticky resins on your hair with this product, your hair will tangle up quite a bit and so it’s difficult to detangle with a brush. For me, I’ll blow dry my hair first and only spray this Nioxin Volumizing Reflectives Root Lifter when my hair is about 80% dry. This way, it’s easier for me to use a brush to style my hair.
What I like about it?
Because I have a greasy scalp, my hair usually gets relatively flat hours after I’ve blown it dry. With Nioxin Root Lifter however, I find my hair still looks well-styled and shapely the entire day. As a whole, I find my hair feeling thicker because this volumizer gives them better texture. In addition, my hair doesn’t look stiff and neither does it feel dry. Other plus points are that the hairspray is easy to use, smells fine and is reasonably priced at S$30.
What I dislike about it?
Like I mentioned, even though I don’t get sticky resins on my hair with this product, my hair does tangle up quite a bit and it can be difficult to detangle if I’m not careful. I need to start off using my hands first before styling with the brush. In addition, I find that my hair only looks fuller but I don’t actually see very much volumizing effect. And the major lowlight for this product is that it isn’t easily available to me because it is also supplied at specific hairstyling salons that carry Nioxin products like Le Salon at Ngee Ann City.
Summary
My hairstylist has definitely got me expecting too much because I was slightly disappointed this product didn’t give my hair the sort of volume I had in mind. But I have to say it works in making my fine thin hair look fuller. In addition, my hair looks shapely the entire day with the extra support and hold it provides. So I’ll might still buy this product again the next time.
