Does eating pineapples make me slimmer?
Monday, 28 July 2008I’ve been losing weight over these few months. To begin with, I’m not fat and I’m pretty indifferent to my weight. I’m actually slightly irritated that people keep commenting that I’m thinner plus my clothes and even my wedding ring are now so much looser. Actually, I haven’t done anything to shed off the kilos. I’ve been eating the same number of meals based on the same diet. I haven’t been exercising and instead, have been sitting in front of my computer most of the time. So what has contributed to my weight loss? I gave this some thoughts and I suspect, it is pineapples!
High dose of Vitamin C
Sometime earlier in the year, I started eating pineapples on a daily basis. I eat about three slices, which is about a quarter of a pineapple, usually after my lunch. Except for the fact that pineapples contain lots of Vitamin C and that it is pretty acidic, I don’t know much about this fruit. But since suspecting that it has caused my weight loss, I did some online research into the fruit.
Good source of bromelain enzyme
According to the wikipedia, pineapple is a good source of manganese and contains significant amounts of Vitamin C and Vitamin B1. In addition, the fruit contains an enzyme called bromelain that aids digestion and helps prevent inflammation and swelling.
Bromelain and slimming pills
I couldn’t find strong concrete scientific evidence that eating pineapples could contribute to weight loss but it looks like I’m not alone in my suspicions. For example, I found this website that stated that pineapples can promote natural weight loss. In addition, I found that some manufacturers who use bromelain in their slimming pills have been claiming that it can help to break down body fat and enables slimmers to lose weight effortlessly. However, this claim has not been backed up and it is said that bromelain, like any other protein in the gut, would be digested and should have no action on body weight. (source)
Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) and weight loss
But pineapples also contains Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) which is said to help metabolize carbohydrates. When I searched about this vitamin, it came up in a lot of weight loss resource websites! There appears to be some link between Vitamin B and weight loss but according to Love To Know, Vitamin B and weight loss go hand in hand, but only when all forms of vitamin B are taken together.
Promotes better metabolism and better digestion
So does eating pinepapples really promote weight loss? Well, I can’t say for sure since I cannot quote you any brillant information from experts. But if you think about it, with better metabolism and better digestion that comes with eating pineapples daily, losing weight isn’t such a far-fetched idea. However, I can only say it worked for me and I’m not discounting there could be other factors or food that needs to work in combination for the effect.

I think you make a great point, and based on your research it sounds quite possible pineapples could assist in weight loss. At the very least, they’re delicious and healthy too
Jen: It won’t yield overnight weight loss for sure. More like slimming overtime. Anyway, I agree. They’re delicious and healthy. I’m so hooked that I need my serving everyday now. And with great Vit C, why not?

Very interesting. Perhaps I’ll try it, too!
AM: Take it as a good source of Vit C too!

I love pineapples but have been advised not to overindulge in them as it is considered too “cooling”, according to TCM. Maybe I need to balance it with more “heaty” fruit like durians or mangoes.
flym: It’s true…I’ve heard that too. Not particularly good for women during that time of the month. Plus it’s acidic so shouldn’t be eaten on an empty stomach.

this is interesting, i have tried so many ways and yet none of the slimming methods worked for me
but i do take plenty of fruits (oranges) on daily basis and none of them contribute to weight loss. perhaps i am going to give this a try. thanks for sharing this info!
prettybeautiful: Well, take it like a healthy fruit. The slimming effects are not immediate but more like over a stretch.

Ooh, interesting! I experienced the same slimming effect with green tea–didn’t change my eating habits, just had about 4-5 cups a day. But maybe that’s just the effect of the tea making me eat less, since I usually lose my appetite after a cup (so bitter!).
I think I’ll try having pineapple daily…
I have a question, though: do you have the pineapples freshly cut, or canned?
Hi! I eat the pineapples fresh. I think the vitamins are lost on the canned ones…

One of the key health advantages of a vegetarian diet is its high fiber content.
The Pineapple diet formula is totally a new diet system that is much different from the diet programs you’ve come across. With this system you are eventually accelerating your fat/calorie burning engine to a much faster rate and this happens within the first 24 hours of your start with this diet.

Funnily enough my better half came home today and by the by mentioned she came across a site where a guy had written he lost 50 pounds by eating a whole pineapple every day. Will see if she can find the link again and come back and post it. If one can actually lose a decent amount of weight I’m borrowing a friend’s pickup tomorrow and driving to the fruit & veg store!
Eating one whole pineapple? But I found the side effects of eating pineapples long term is back ache.

reading abt all urs experieces s amazing. I agree too.i think v should consume only d fresh ones as canned pineapples r very sugary, turning them to high caloric.to avoid that rawness of the fruit ,we can half boil them with 1 tablespoon water and few drops of honey. it can be used for yogerts and salads.

I can’t believe I’m reading all this – for the last year I’ve been eating up to a whole pineapple a day myself. I’ve gradually lost a little over 30 pounds and have been telling people it must be the pineapple. Its the only thing I’ve done differently! I have several friends who are now starting to incorporate pineapple into their diets as a result of my weight loss. Part of the reason it works so well is simply because it really is so delicious and one just doesn’t crave other foods when eating it…. Good luck to everyone…

If you take a quarter of a pineapple daily, you might see weight loss in 3 months. I use might cos there could be other factors involved so I can’t guarantee.
However, I later found out that pineapples are too cooling and can cause backaches.

I can’t promise and eating too much pineapples maybe bad for your health too.
Suggest you try eating some pineapples, drinking one cup of green tea daily and eating avocados two to three times a week. Of course, you got to watch the other stuff you eat.

Hi… I have never heard about pineapple being good for weightloss but after stumbling across this article, I would have to agree it can definitely help slim down… I started losing weight about 3 months ago and have lost nearly 12 kg in total… but through one of those weeks I ate alot of pineapple at a party when I was avoiding all the unhealthy food… it was such a delicious pineapple that I did eat a rather large amount of it… a couple days later when I weighed myself I had lost 4kg for that week… I don’t know if it was from the pineapple, or if it’s just a coincidence that the week I ate a lot of pineapple was the week I lost the most weight too… food for thought at least

It’s very delicious and great for losing weight but have to eat them in moderation. I discovered my backaches were a result of eating pineapples every day.

yes, I personally believe in everything in moderation…. there’s no point doing fad diets or extreme weightloss that you’re not going to be able to maintain… slow and steady wins the race… but little tips like this are great….
