Asymmetrical haircut flatters facial features

Angela Zhang Asymmetric Bob

My hairstylist wanted to give me an asymmetrical haircut which is basically a style where the hair does not have left-right symmetry and one side is cut longer than the other. It’s a flashback to the 80s he said, though the current trend is less drastic than the Cyndi Lauper style where one side was cropped extremely short, exposing the scalp.

I remember seeing the modern asymmetrical bob on Victoria Beckham, Rihana and more recently on Asian celebrities like Hebe Tian of S.H.E. and Angela Zhang. Although this style can be done on any types of hair length, I was a little hesistant, wondering if it can suit my age since an asymmetrical haircut would definitely give more focus to my face! I don’t want to look like some rock chick! Moreover, I’m not sporting a bob and do not wish to revert to that hairstyle.

Asymmetric cut with soft angle
In the end, my hairstylist kept to my current hairstyle but style it by cutting the hair on my left slightly shorter than my right, giving it a soft angle and showing more of my left ear as a result. He also kept my fringe long. The back is kept at a straight length at my request instead of the asymmetrical style he proposed initially.

I have to say the cut was good and I’m pretty happy with it. However, because it is now rather short, I have to work on keeping it look fuller with my Nioxin Root Lifter.

Asymmetrical hairstyle flatters facial features
I asked my hairstylist if the asymmetrical hairstyle is suitable for every face shape and his answer is that because such styles can help to flatter the face, it’s good for those with bland features. Well, I guess what he meant is that the style can make one more interesting looking. However, an extreme asymmetrical cut suits the younger crowd or those who like to look wildly different. For the rest of us, something subtly asymmetrical is good. Like having asymmetrical bangs would be interesting too.

Actually, I think it’s pretty easy to determine if the asymmetrical haircut will suit you. Just tug one side of your hair behind your ear and if you still look nice, chances are, an angled look might just work for you.

Leon: Thanks Leon! You’re too kind…but part of the radiance is the illusion from the flash. My skin isn’t as great. It’s got pigmentation spots! ?
