DIY Beauty: Jojoba Seed Oil for cleansing

Jojoba Seed Oil

After learning that some carrier oils work well as a facial cleanser, I decided to get a bottle of Jojoba Seed Oil from Whoopeekiddies recently to try out. According to the website, this is certified organic grade whose species is “Simmondsia Californica”, grown in USA. It is not oil, but an array of wax ester in liquid form.

It contains protein and minerals, as well as a waxy substance similar to collagen. Because the oil is similar to our own sebum plus it is hypoallergenic and pure, Jojoba oil is suitable for most skin types and works well as a moisturizer and emollient agent to improve skin elasticity and suppleness. In fact, I’ve come across many raves from users on the benefits of this oil for skincare and decided to test it out as a cleanser.

Good makeup remover
Compared to commercially available oil cleansers, this does not emulsify but it works well to remove all my makeup thoroughly. Actually better than the cream cleansers which I was using. Plus one of the benefits of Jojoba oil is that it dissolves clogged pores and returns the skin to natural pH balance.

Good carrier oil to be used for oil cleansing method
In addition, I found it a great carrier oil to used under the oil cleansing method which I learned from Leon of Beauty Secrets Revealed. I didn’t find a lot of difference when I was using the Kukui Nut Oil with the oil cleansing method but with the Jojoba Seed Oil, my skin not only felt wonderfully soft and supple afterwards, but my face looked rather radiant too. You can read Leon’s post via the link or this article if you’re interested to find out more about the oil cleansing method. The only problem for me is that I find this method overly time consuming.

Cost effective natural organic cleanser
For each facial wash, I use about 8 drops of the Jojoba oil and I reckon the 1oz which cost me only S$6 will last me for awhile, which is fairly economical. Plus it is an organic cleanser which I believe will provide me with long term benefits. I’m definitely loving this!

Hey, did you use any other carrier oils apart from Jojoba oil and then I assume you wipe the oil away with a warm towel?

Thanks.. I am very keen to try OCM!

De: Yes, I am using rosehip oil and camellia oil, but not so consistently though. With the Jojoba oil, I wash away with a very warm towel. Yeah, OCM is interesting but it’s time consuming and waste a lot of water though. Try it to see if you like it. A few ladies have said good things about it already.

  2. Leon says:

Hey Sesame, Thanks for including my blog link:) Have you tried grapeseed oil? It also works well on combination skin.

Leon: Hey, don’t mention it! Oh yes, I’ve been thinking of trying grapeseed oil for its antioxidant benefits. I believe it’s quite light. It’s on my “to get” list!

  3. prettybeautiful says:

wow i seriously respect your effort for trying to make everything organic and DIY. i am so lazy myself! but this is indeed an eye-opener tips for making cleanser ?

prettybeautiful: No, I’m still in between although I prefer natural and organic stuff. Anyway, DIY is cheaper.

  4. Leon says:

Grapeseed oil is very light and it also
    makes enlarged pores less visible.

Leon: Oh! Then I must get it soon! ?

  5. Ms. Blacklace says:

Cool. I suddenly feel like trying it. So far I’ve only used organic tea tree oil for my acne but I’ve never tried using organic oils like jojoba for cleansing. However it seems cumbersome.

Do you think it’s possible to use them like regular oil cleansers and just rinse them off with warm water? Lol… If it is, I’m totally in!!

Btw, I’m a regular reader of mywomenstuff and I found a link to your blog. Cool stuff you got here!

Ms Blacklace: Thanks for visiting and welcome! I know what you mean. It is quite cumbersome with the oil cleansing method cos it takes quite awhile to prepare and wash. But with warm water alone, you can’t rinse off entirely. What I do is I use it as a makeup remover, then double cleansing with foaming cleanser.

  6. elleve says:

hmm wouldn’t the double cleansing remove more oil? and do you use just jojoba alone to cleanse it the first time?

one thing i’m always quite concerned about, is how to keep that washcloth clean. somehow, putting it in the washing machine with everything else makes me a bit doubtful!

elleve: You mean that double cleaning making our skin drier? Well, no. The important thing is your cleanser should be gentle. And about the washcloth, I have similar concerns which is why I don’t use OCM that frequently. I’m uncomfortable about the cloth and the heat from the steaming water.

  7. troubledGal says:

I’m so disappointed as I thought the OCM will help clear my blackheads or at least improve a bit but it doesnt. I was using Grape Seed oil plus castor oil, hoping it will improve my oily tzone and remove blackheads but nothing change.

troubledGal: Hmm…how long have you tried OCM? The result is not immediate for some. Some readers report seeing results in a month. Then again, perhaps it’s not the best cleansing method for your skin type. Anyway, my first attempt wasn’t too successful too. It was the 2nd time around when I changed the oil that I noticed a difference.

  8. troubledGal says:

I have been using it for about a month. I have not seen any improvement on my blackheads. I ve purchased other oil so I might stick to using Jojoba Oil for a while and see if it helps. When you use Jojoba oil, do you still need to add castor oil? As I found from my research the sites recommended that u add in more castor oil if u have oily face (oily tzone)

troubledGal: I use it by itself without the castor oil. I suppose you can add, but if you’re not seeing benefits after a month, then maybe this cleansing method does not work for your skin…anyway, I’ve reduced to using this only once or twice a week now.

  9. tryingtohelp says:

dear troubledgal, don’t use castor oil! it will completely dry out your skin. i suggest you go to see a face specialist and find out your skin type. then work from there. please know your skin type because we all have different skin.

try only jojoba oil, though. just to see if it works for you.

also, i think apple cider vinegar (bragg’s) works well for removing oily skin/blackheads.

trytohelp: Hey, that’s interesting info on castor oil cos troubledGal seems to have found info suggesting her to add it in for oily skin. I’ve never used castor oil but personally I prefer to use oil by itself. Oh, another thing I found great for removing blackheads is baking soda. It’s fantastic!

  10. wd says:

Hi, I’ve tried OCM for 2 days and instead I see more blackheads T.T maybe I need to use a foaming cleanser after that instead, do you have any recommendations for a good foaming cleanser?

  11. sesame says:

Try A’kin Sandalwood Cleanser. But if you use more blackheads, you might have to exfoliate off. Perhaps OCM don’t suit you…it doesn’t work for everyone.

I’ve got a review of the A’kin cleanser here:

  12. wd says:

Hi, thanks for ur reply and recommendation. I will definitely try it sometime (:

I actually read thru the comments on the OCM page, this page and the double cleansing page… I followed the comments of the readers, by massaging the oil on face for longer than I previously did, approx 5 mins or so… I was extremely bored… then I placed the warm towel on my face, before washing it off with my cleanser which I’m not sure if it’s mild…

But anws, the blackheads have been lessened and are getting lesser. I think the longer I rub the oil on my face the more the blackheads will disappear… I’m not sure yet, but I’ll continue trying OCM for a while (:

  13. sesame says:

Just make sure you’re using OCM on a relatively clean face and not with a face full of makeup and impurities.

  14. wd says:

Hi again, I’ve come to update on my little OCM “journey”.

Despite the initial setbacks, I’ve come to learn that OCM indeed does work.

I really believe it will work for everybody. I believed it will work for me and I pressed on, and tried to see what I did wrong, and eventually, I saw that it did work.

Though I oil cleanse too infrequently to see the “long term results”, but while oil cleansing just now I managed to dislodge lots of dirt and little “seeds” from my face, whatever it is called. And my blackheads look far less, too.

The most amazing thing I managed to extract is the dirt. While out of my face came a large amount of seed-like things, I also managed to rub out these black dots which I had never seen before even if I squeezed my blackheads.

I think it’s either dirt or blackheads, I have no idea what it is.

I will list down the mistakes I made initially while oil cleansing and hopefully, might be able to help some understand why it didn’t work for them.

Firstly, the pimples. I truly believe the pimples are caused by not washing the oil off properly. Because some websites state that washing it off with warm water is sufficient. Unfortunately, it’s not, and I had to use a foaming cleanser as suggested on your website.

I come to think that people tend to break out on their jawline because it’s the area where one may be a little careless in washing off the oil residue, and hence lead to pimples.

Secondly, oil cleansing is only effective when you rub it on your face for a verrrrrrryyyy looonnngggg time. At least for me, I need more than half hour, and I still wanted to continue, but I realise it’s really wasting too much time and I’m hogging the bathroom.

One needs to keep massaging your fingertips over and over across his/her face, especially on problem areas and where the skin feels “bumply”. After ample rubbing, some of these “bumps” will dislodge from the skin. At least, that is my experience.

Yeap, I’m aware I’ve written too long a comment but I just wanted to keep you updated because it’s from you that I got many useful tips (besides oil cleansing) and was able to learn my mistakes here.

    Thank you (:

  15. sesame says:

Thanks for sharing your experience; your tips are invaluable! I would imagine OCM is good used once or twice a week since the massaging process is time consuming. But it’s great you’re benefiting from it.

  17. Sunny says:

Hi sesame, how you keep jojoba oil? Can I just keep outside fridge ?

  18. Sesame says:

Yes, normal room temperature will do. But they don’t keep for long…a couple of months and they’ll go rancid.
