Phytocedrat Sebo-Regulating Shampoo

Phytocedrat Shampoo

I recently switched to Phytocedrat Sebo-Regulating Shampoo and for awhile now, I haven’t had to resort to using dry shampoo to keep my hair looking less greasy. I have seen this product around for some time already but haven’t been inspired to test it out because I never had good experience with shampoos containing botanical ingredients. Well, shampoos that do not foam usually doesn’t work for my extremely greasy scalp because mine is the sort that produce sebum almost IMMEDIATELY after washing. So you can imagine my trauma all these years; not to mention the amount of dry shampoo which I have been inhaling!

Restores natural balance to sebaceous glands on the scalp
Anyway, I decided to try out Phytocedrat Sebo-Regulating Shampoo because it is specially formulated for my type of hair condition – greasy roots, dry ends and frequent washing required. It is supposed to help reduce oiliness in the scalp by restoring the natural balance of the sebaceous function and it also contains a mild washing base (Saponaria and Panama Bark decoction) that prevents excess stimulation of the sebaceous glands.

Delicious natural botanical scent
The thing that impressed me most is the smell! It’s DELICIOUS! And this is the result of the natural botanical active ingredients such as Tormentil, Geranium, Essential oil of Lemon, Nettle, Rosemary and Sage; all containing astringent properties to help eliminate excess sebum.

Phytocedrat Shampoo Instructions

Contains SLS to allow shampoo to foam well
Although said to be of botanical origin, this shampoo contains Sodium Laureth Sulfate and that is why it foams really well! My hair felt squeaky clean while I was washing it and I didn’t have to lather a second time at all. The great thing was that my hair felt really light after blow drying. I understand that the addition of Abietic acid coats hair and prevent the migration of sebum onto the hair shaft thus giving volume to the hair.

Grease free for half a day
My hair did indeed look bearable and not greasy for a good half a day but I still can’t keep my scalp completely grease free for a full day. I’m not sure if it’ll get better with longer term use because I read that the longer one uses Phytocedrat, the healthier the scalp and hence, the longer period of time one can maintain an oil-free scalp. I guess I have to wait and see.

Some of my gripes on Phytocedrat
So far however, I love using this shampoo. It’s the best of the shampoos I’ve tried and it helps my hair condition to a large extent. My main gripe is the ends on my hair do look a tad dry now especially since I don’t use conditioner. In addition, while the aluminium packaging is great but I wish they change the cap so that I won’t have to worry about spillage of the contents while pouring. And because it is liquid in texture, I must always remember to shake the content so that the ingredients do not settle at the bottom.

Does not contain 100% botanical ingredients
Anyway, Phytocedrat Sebo-Regulating Shampoo is not a 100% botanical shampoo. It has a really long ingredient list and while glancing at it, I spotted Tetrasodium EDTA besides SLS. But I’m fine with these for shampoos because without SLS, I’m not sure if I can maintain a clean scalp at all.

Phytocedrat Sebo-Regulating Shampoo is available at Guardian for S$28 but for S$30 at Watsons.

I can definitely relate to oily scalp. The frustrating thing is that after using these shampoo, my hair usually turn very dry so I am very particular about the conditioner that I use.

Now I turn to non-SLS organic shampoos and it does not have that good effect as the SLS ones.

So I am still trying to find the best of both worlds – non SLS shampoo that doesn’t leave my hair dry after washing or oily too soon. Not much to ask, right? ?

De: I know mine can’t do with non-SLS type of shampoos. It is so oily! I never condition my hair because it makes it more limp. But now, I may have to think about conditioning the ends only.

I’m another one with oily scalp who can’t find a shampoo which cleans the scalp enough and yet is gentle on my coloured hair. One which cleans my scalp well will invariably leave the hair dry. The shampoo for coloured hair will tend to leave build-up or not clean the scalp adequately.

What’s one to do? I’ve read that we should use a shampoo to suit a greasy scalp and choose a conditioner suitable for the hair type. But I find that despite using the right conditioner to compensate for the harsh washing, using a shampoo meant for greasy or normal scalp is too drying for coloured hair.

Flym: I know exactly what you’re saying. I have been living with this problem for years and I don’t use shampoo for oily scalp but for volume until now. My best bet was to use a dry shampoo daily to counteract the greasy scalp but I hate inhaling those powder!

please update us and let us know how it does in the long run! =) i would love to try it but i’m broke right now (just bought a new car with the bf)… waiting to finish my current shampoo!

Reggi: Sure! I will update if there is a positive effect long term. Have fun with your new car!

yah, i realised that a non sls shampoo is definitely not as good as one with. Been experiencing alot of hair fall after i switched to an organic shampoo. I used Phytocedrat Sebo-Regulating Shampoo before i thought it was pretty good. ?

Faeryberry: Yes, it’s pretty good! Unfortunately, I haven’t had luck with non-sls shampoos. You experienced hair fall? That’s alarming! I thought they’re supposed to help with issues like that. Could it be due to more sebum secretion or the ingredients? But on a related note, I have more luck with soap shampoos in the past. They foam though so probably have sls. I’m trying to search for a rhassoul soap shampoo and see if that’ll work for me.

I have been using this shampoo for close to two years after i saw a review in a local magazine! And i can tell you, its VERY Good!!!! I used to be using Pantene and my scalp would always get greasy within 24 hours. Somehow i know its due to the harsh shampoo and stumbled across a review about PhytoCedrat in a local magazine. Now my scalp is very healthy and i do not even need to wash my hair every day, and yet, it is still clean. But the effect is gradual. I guess within 2 months of using, you will see the effect.

Glad you like this shampoo. I did like it but it was giving me rather dry ends after awhile and I hate to use hair conditioner so I moved on to new shampoos.

    great review, sesame!
i’m posting this here cuz i don’t where i should be posting. have you used anything for thinning hair? any products or regime that grows back thick healthy hair? i find that with age, and adult stress… my hair is thinning. i would love to prevent further loss or grow back some more, if possible. just wondering if you used any such products/massage/treatmen.
    much love.

I used to have that obsession about thinning hair many years back and I tried many products. Lately, have not tried but my hairstylist swears by Regaine. But with those products, you need to use continuously. You might want to read my new review on this EO Clarifying Shampoo. It has some benefits in keeping scalp healthy and promote hair growth.

Anyway, I recently read that hair thinning for women could be a hormonal issue so perhaps you want to find out more about why your hair is thinning too.

Try Gilchrist and Soames Sprout out shampoo and conditioner. I had this problem occur out of the blue, oily waxy crown, clarifying shampoos, dishsoap, listerine, etc didnt work. Came by this shampoo on accident while on vacation, and it makes my hair normal again!

    Really awesome article. Truely!

    Hi Sesame,

Just wondering whether you still use Phytocedrat? I’ve tried Burt’s Bees Very Volumizing Shampoo before. But, after using it for 2 months, it lost its effect. It didn’t give my hair volume and my scalp became greasy.

  12. sesame says:

Yes, I have tried and also reviewed it here:

    https://www.vivawoman.net/2008/11/28/phytocedrat-sebo-regulating-shampoo/

Quite like it then but it made my hair ends rather dry but I wasn’t using a conditioner then.

  13. Jenn says:

I have tried the phytocitrus shampoo for colored hair and I don’t think I’ve used it that much because I wasn’t impressed and I can’t believe I didn’t notice it has SLS!

What has worked for me which is non-SLS is the Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo and heat protectant spray. My scalp gets oily and the rest of my hair looks dry and damaged probably since I color it (though I usually use an ammonia free hair color) & due to blow drying. I know I need a better hair dryer but can’t afford one right now.

Anyways, the thing with the No Frizz shampoo is I think I have oiler 2nd day hair because of it. My hair is not as oily as it used to be so I am dealing with it. I also occasionally get dandruff. I wanted to try the phyto dandruff shampoo but saw one of the main ingredients was Salicylic Acid which I already had a bad experience using on my face with Murad so I was very hesitant to try it on my scalp. I have used Kiehl’s dandruff shampoo but it has SLS and is drying. That’s too bad because I love the minty smell and how squeaky clean it makes my hair feel but dry at the same time.
