DIY Beauty: making your own cleansing oil

diy-cleansing-oil

This is the cleansing oil I made during the DIY skin care workshop at Jayeon Miyin in December and I use it whenever I need to remove my makeup these days. It’s similar to those commercial oil cleansers I’ve tried, is very gentle and not too oily but it gets rid of my makeup well. It turns into a sort of milky lotion on contact with water and although it is said to be able to clean the face by itself, I still found myself having to use a soap or foaming facial after using it.

It’s very easy to make and here I share the recipes for two skin types although I figure out it’ll be a lot easier to just get one off the shelves because of the amount of ingredients involved.

Recipe for normal skin/dry skin
To make a 100ml bottle of cleansing oil, you need 40g jojoba oil, 15g apricot kernel oil, 15g sweet almond oil, 4g green tea seed oil, 9g olive liquid (emulsifying agent), 4g vitamin E (synthetic preservative) and 13 drops of essential oil.

Recipe for oily skin
To make a 100ml bottle of cleansing oil, you need 30g apricot kernel oil, 35g sunflower oil, 5g green tea seed oil, 12g olive liquid (emulsifying agent), 4g vitamin E (synthetic preservative) and 13 drops of essential oil.

Method
1. Mix oil and olive liquid
2. Warm up the mixture to around 30 – 40 degree
3. Add essential oil

You can also get this cleansing oil at the Jayeon Miyin Private Sale. Please note that you’ll need to register as an Fr3b member first to be able to access the online sale though.

There are some interesting items on sale like brocolli soap, spinach soap, chestnut shell soap, green tea soap, pearl powder CP soap and oatmeal soap which are naturally handmade going on sale for as low as A$2.80 for a 22g size.  If you’re interested, you have from now till 1 March to check them out.  However, this is only for those in Singapore!

this is a great recipe for those who are very into DIY/homemade stuff. however, i highly doubt that i will DIY this as i need to buy all the ingredients for this purpose only, and the trouble of heating it up to that temp only. but i dont mind buying this if someone is selling :P

prettybeautiful: Unfortunately JM’s sale is only for S’pore…otherwise you can get it.

I’m with prettybeautiful on this. Its going to be a lot more expensive and troublesome to get hold of all the ingredients. I’m not fussed about making it, but I know just the ingredients alone will cost a small bomb. Still, its something to try if I ever get my mitts on the necessary oils :)

ParisB: Ya, that’s why I mentioned that it’s much easier to just buy one off the shelves. But it’s actually easy to make. If someone already has a number of the oils, all is needed is the olive liquid and vit E. Essential oil is more for the scent and aromatherapy benefits.

I was just curious if these cleansing oils can be used for OCM? Because I thought of using my fancl one for OCM but was unsure if I could because of the emulsifier.

However, I did purchase grapeseed oil after your recommendation and I LOVE the texture! Attempted my first OCM with just pure grapeseed oil on myself and on my boyfriend and wow, its quite good stuff. Much more evident on my boyfriend though since he has many many oil seeds! thanks for the info and love reading your posts! (:

Sharon: Yes, you can use such emulsifying cleansing oil for OCM too. It’s the same process. Oh, so glad you love the grapeseed oil and good to learn that your bf can use it too! I’m always worried that what works for me may not work for others. But in the case of grapeseed oil, I highly recommend! Thanks for coming back often! ;)

  4. raelynn Says:

viva, can the grapeseed oil that yoursessentially be removed just by emulsifying instead of the whole OCM?? i tend to double cleanse even when using cleansing oils to remove makeup..

Raelynn: If you don’t want to use OCM, you can use a gentle foaming cleanser to remove. It works too!

  5. cowsandlemonade Says:

What is OCM? How do you check the temperature when warming the oil up on the stove?

cowsandlemonade: OCM is oil cleansing method. For temperature, you need to use a thermometer to measure. It’s kind of troublesome unless you can gauge.

Interesting … a DIY cleansing oil! But yeah, I think I’ll stick to the ones at the shops, ‘cos I’m going to have to spend more on buying the individual oils (which I don’t already have). But great recipe nevertheless :)

Tine: Yeah, it’s a lot easier. The recipe is great for those who want something specifically for their skin type too and can’t find one that suits them.

Hi, with cleansing product i watched on youtube from “michellephan” also the same person who perform the tutorials for beginners ” hot to apply eyeliner” on your other blog.
she states that she rotates her cleaners every 2 months and also mentioning skin can become tolerant to product when used so oftenly?
is that a bad thing for your skin using a product for a long period of time and not changing?

bibibam: Yes, I’ve heard of that theory. I’m not exactly sure why but know this happens with hair products and it’s call product buildup. With skincare, I’m not sure although I’m trying to find out.

  8. Leon Says:

Hey Sesame, Why not use a natural vitamin E instead of a synthrtic one?

Leon: It was supplied by the trainer but yes you’re right, natural would be better.

  9. jia Says:

hi i watched on youtube; many channels that it states that extra virgin olive oil is a very good make remover i want to know is it only good to remove eye make up or can i use for the entire face?

Jia: You can use for both. However, in its pure form, it is very oily hence you need to either use the oil cleansing method via a hot washcloth or use another foaming cleanser after using it.

  10. shelly Says:

what is olive liquid?? and where can u get it?

Shelly: You need to get the olive oil from those DIY ingredient supplier. Sometimes they’re sold in pharmacies or drugstores too.

  11. Ms. Blacklace Says:

If I’m not wrong, Olive liquid is actually Olive Oil PEG 7Ester (PEG 7 Olivate), that you can get off whoopeekiddies.

For this recipe, do you think I can use other oils instead of apricot kernel and sunflower oil? Lol. Those oils for some reason my skin loves castor and grapeseed oil and I’m too scared to try any other haha!

    sesame Reply:

I remember that the oils were recommended based on skin type so it might be possible to change them according to your needs.

[...] There are a multitude of such products in the market these days, but the popular ones are still of Japanese origin. Surprisingly though, I haven’t tried many. The last one I used was my own DIY makeup cleansing oil. [...]
