DIY Beauty: customize your own lipstick

DIY lipstick

I came across this very interesting DIY beauty tip while reading the January issue of InStyle magazine during my hair cut.  Making our own customized lipstick out of lip balm!  And it’s so easy!  All you need is a tube or tin of lip balm, a blush powder and an empty container.

How to make
I used Burt’s Bees Lip Balm which was also featured in the magazine. Nars Blush was used in the article but I used a mineral blush by the shade of Petal that I rather like but hardly use. I then use a plastic stirrer to scoop out some of the lip balm and put it into an empty container. Next, I pour out a bit of the blush powder. I didn’t know how much to pour but I later realized that you don’t need a lot to get your desired shade. About half (or even lesser) the amount of the lip balm you use is sufficient.

blending-lipstick

Blending is messy
Then you proceed to blend both together until you get a colored creamy consistency. I’ll warn you that it’s a little messy to blend the mixture so you need to have tissue paper on standby. But the end result is rather exciting!

My customed lipstick color

Use of lip brush or finger for application
TA-DA! My customized lipstick shade! It’s a tad brownish and rather pretty. Something that I will definitely wear! But of course unlike a lipstick, you have to use a lip brush to apply this on. You can do so with your finger too. Just make sure it’s clean!

Endless possibilities of customizing
Actually the possibilities for customizing are endless. All you need is a lip balm and you can mix it with any shades of blush powder you like. You can even mix with a few blush powder.

So time to put those old lip balms and blush powder to use! Come to think of it, you can even mix it with your favorite eye shadow! So green lip color anyone?

    Wow…this looks great!

But I hardly use any lip colour nowadays. Just use my lip moisturiser.

pf1123: I need some colors or I’ll look very pale…

Great tip! This is fantastic for people like me who is fickle about lipstick colours. I had stopped buying lipstick as I realised I cannot stay ‘loyal’ enough to one to get my money worth.

I just gotten some blush samples from Everyday Minerals. Guess I would be doing some mixing and stirring tonight. Yippee!

    DG: Have fun! :)

Sesame, I tried this method before and usually it is messy.

There an alternative way to do this DIY lip colour as well, using Vaseline (those tub ones)and place it on a very hot water, let it melt. Once it melt you can pour it anywhere and mix with any blush colour powder/pigments or maybe lipstick. You can reheat to make it more neat like in a clean way! =)

I’ve make some for myself and I really love them.

Dee: Yeah, this is quite messy but it’s quite easy so I gave it a shot. I read about using Vaseline even for this method but I never knew about the melting part. Putting the tub in hot water is easy! Maybe I’ll try it another time…when I get a tub of the Vaseline. Thanks for the tip!

wow this is reeeeeeeally inteesting! but is it safe to put blusher on lips? hmmm

Prettybeautiful: It’s safe – like what Raelynn mentioned, just check the ingredients.

it should be quite safe if it’s mineral blusher. but you have to triple check the ingredient list to make sure it doesnt contain Ultramarines. =)

another way that i’ve seen is to melt beeswax and add some essential oil and carrier oil and the mineral colour, pour into an empty lip balm stick and tadah! tinted lip balm.

    have fun!

Raelynn: I’ve come across the melting method even using old lipsticks made into a palette but I don’t want to do the extra work.

actually come to think of it, it’s really such a great method, whether using vaseline or beeswax.. it’s like making ur own gel cheek colour, eyeliner, eyeshadow etc. pity it cant be used for liquid foundation. frowns. there’s so many different forumlas/recipes to make liquid foundation…

Raelynn: Making liquid foundation is more tricky. I so of tried that at the DIY workshop though I was making BB cream and the process is really complicated.

Hey Seasme, Its an amazing post, thanks a lot:) I don’t use any make-up these days(not even my favorite eye and lip make-up) because I am at home all day but this tip is very useful and looks like a great fun.

Leon: Yes it’s very fun even though it’s messy!

Great idea! I love that color on you.
I just know that I have a little tin of Burt’s around here somewhere and the perfect blush to use too.

Elaine: I have the Burt’s Bees lip balm for quite awhile…at least using it for this will deplete it quickly! Heh!

This looks interesting and looks like something a busy person like me can try. My lip balms from My Lip Stuff disintegrate after a while so now I can put them to good use. Do you think it works if I pour some Benetint instead of blusher?

Ms Lips: Should work…suggest you try with small portions first.

PS: Hmm maybe I’ll do a blue lippie, just for fun. Hahaha

Tine: Blue lippie! Must show us under FOTD!
