Viva Challenge: apply skin care lying down

pillow Viva Challenge: apply skin care lying down

Sometime ago, I discussed about extrinsic aging caused by gravity and lately I’ve been hearing more experts talking about this; even Taiwanese celebrity stylist Kevin whom I met last week too. So one of the valuable tips I picked up from Kevin in his hands-on demonstration was to apply skin care products while lying down.   Yes, no kidding!

Effective for applying cream in an upward outward manner
We’ve been told again and again that we should wash and apply products on our face in an upward, outward fashion.  So lying down is a favorable position to get this act in place.  In fact, this is one thing we always experience when we visit the facial spas as the aestheticians will apply skin care products for us in an upward outward manner.  This is probably why we get a temporary facelift right after our facials.

Okay, I know some of you are probably sniggering and think this is quite impossible to do.  Well, if you’re serious about skin care, I think this is one tip you don’t want to ignore.  That is why I’m making this a Viva Challenge.

Use a pillow to help you
You can do this just once a day in the evening when you’re putting on your skin care products.  What I do is to put a pillow right on my back so that my head is slightly tilted downwards.  Depending on what I use on my face, it maybe convenient to bring the products to the bed for application.  Otherwise, I just pour them into my hand before lying down and then proceed to apply on my face in an outward direction towards my ears and upward direction towards my crown for the forehead.

Facial oils allow for longer massage
I’ve been doing this whenever I can and I found that using an oil really allows me to massage my face for a longer time as it doesn’t get absorbed as quickly as my face cream.  I feel good doing this and I’m thinking there must be some cumulative effects doing this long term!

So ladies, would you take up this challenge?  Or maybe we already have savvy ones amongst you doing this on a daily basis?

I do that sometimes.Usually is when I very tired, after I shower I lie down on my bed & apply my skin care & massage. It’s do feel good & relax :)

Florence: So now you can relax more often… :)

  2. i always find that applying moisturizing upwards when we are standing up is a little hard. but lying down is definitely easier than standing up. i guess?

will challenge myself to this! :D

Prettybeautiful: Hmm…I feel better lying down but in terms of difficulty, not much of a difference for me. But for the neck, definitely easier to lie down.

  3. pf1123 says:

    I don’t think I can do this.

Recently, I have developed a thing about washing my hands clean after I apply each facial product. Like after my oil, wash hands, then apply my moisturiser and wash hand again. Coz the Sea buckthorn oil really makes my hands yellow. Lying down would make me run about more.

In the morning when I slap on more things, I wash my hands more.

pf: Well, that would be difficult. Maybe try only for the last product you apply if you’re keen to do it.

  4. I think it would be kind of difficult since my back and shoulders would be resting on the bed/pillow, and that’ll keep my arms from moving freely around my face. Facialist are facing towards and above you, so that’s a different story. Your arms are attached to your shoulders and I don’t think this will be a easy task at all. And I’m finding it difficult to edit my comments within this comment box (I can’t scroll up or edit my mistakes)…

Innerchild: It’s not difficult but of course doing it for a long time will be tiring. You just need to apply your face cream or oil once a day in this position; a little effort required but not tough. Sorry, there’s no way for the comments to be edited except from the admin panel.

  5. I do apply my skincare laying down! I didn’t even realize I am doing something right! Well I do that but not all the time, the reason so is because I want to have a good look at the TV..lol our tv is “hanging” on a corner :)

Nikki: So you should watch TV more while applying your skincare! ;)

  6. Interesting tip but I am not sure if I would try it. I dont quite understand how this would work. Logically speaking, if we lie down and apply our skincare products and then get up again, would the lie-down-sit-up has any effects?

BUT this tip comes from a beauty guru and it is easy to try, so I would give it a shot and see how it goes. :)

Den: Shouldn’t have any negative effects if that’s what you’re thinking. It’s more of that outward sweeping action defying gravity that has long term cumulative benefits. Maybe try it once at least and if you really don’t like it, then stop. :)

  7. ooo this is good…but i have prob, when exactly we do our daily routine cleanse,tone,moist..? ususaly 2times daily right?..morning of coz when we wokeup
but i always confuse when comes evening,afternoon,night..afternoon i have to wash my face for praying.should i must wash with cleanse to make sure it free from all makeups.should i put tone n moisturizer back?

Farah: You should at least moisturize after washing your face. If you choose to use toner, then that too. Even if you go out bare face without makeup, your face still comes into contact with dust and pollution when you’re out so cleansing again is good especially before you sleep. But keep cleansing to about 2 times a day unless your face is exceedingly oily.

  9. raelynn says:

my makeup/skincare corner happens to be near the foot of my sister’s bed. so i always do my face stuff sitting down and right against the foot of the bed, tilting my head backwards, to ensure that almost every inch of my skin gets the skincare it needs.

Raelynn: Oh lucky you! Tilting works too but I find it a tad tiring for the neck.

  10. I’ve never done this b4, but will wanna try it out someday soon…though i’ve never been really consistent in applying face cream/moisturizers etc. Hm….come to think of it, my skin is starting to get flaky! Better buck up soon b4 it gets worse! lol

Winniel: Try to keep to a regular regime and once you’re on track, you can consider taking up the extra tips like this.

  11. hehehe..so that means..i have to do 123step 5 times aday…huhhuh..looks like i have to buy my stuff twice month..hehehehehehhehhe

    Farah: Oh no…

  12. How do you take care of the nose area the butterfly area, the spot right below each eye, that fans out from your nose. With that area it’s just so easy to apply your products INWARD and up, basically following because your nose is right there basically acting like a “ramp” of some sort.

Teri: For the eye area, I do a quick sweep outwards but for the nose area, I just apply into the “ramp” without much thoughts. After I read your comments I tried and I realized that I apply quickly inward but downwards, following the curve.

  13. Okay, yeah that’s what I thought. This advice sounds good and works easily for the cheek area but it gets a bit weird around the nose area where the angles and elevation on your face makes it a bit hard to go up and outward. lol.

I never thought about this at all to tell you the truth. I did however, read in Dr. Gross’s ski book that long term running and jogging can potentially cause sagging and this sort of tip is sort of the same thing in regards to preventing the gravitational sagging.

The only other problem I have with this method now is…does it take you longer to get your cosmetics into your skin as well? I have problem especially with the sunscreen. You know how I am using Mexitan, well, it does leave a whitish cast and is quite thick, unless you really really rub it into your skin. To get it to really thin out and get onto my skin without being like a thick paste on my face, I would use circular rubs to get it that way. However, with the upward and outward rubbing, there isn’t an opposite downward and inward, like if you get rubing in a diagonal line back and forth, to get the cream to absorb. Getting the cream to absor b with just upward and outward is tough!

Teri: I read about the jogging too. I remember telling my physical fitness teacher this when I was in college and he scolded me for giving excuses!

Okay, I had Susan, a trained cosmetologist to show me as I told her I’m used to washing my face in circular motions and she taught me to increase pressure with upward sweeps and reduce pressure with downward sweeps. I think that can work for product application too. But you need to try it and get use to the motions. It might also take a wee longer time I guess.
