Viva Challenge: drink water once you’re up

Fuji water

Last week’s challenge was particularly difficult for many people but I’m glad that it helped inspired some of you to want to sleep earlier than usual. This week, I’m making it easier. Nothing to do with your sleeping cycle this time but I hope you’ll continue to try to sleep at 10pm whenever you can.

For this week, I’m asking you to develop a habit of drinking at least one glass of water the first thing you wake up in the morning. If you can, drink bottled or mineral water. Otherwise, normal boiled water at room temperature or slightly warmer is fine. I don’t think you can drink cold water early in the morning as it can be a shock to your system.

Keeps our body hydrated
There’s been a lot of discussions of why drinking water first thing in the morning is good for our system with many saying that it helps to clear our system, flush out the toxins and bring up our metabolism rate. Some even claim that this method helps them reduce weight! I just like to think that drinking water first thing in the morning helps us to hydrate from inside out since our body has been at rest for a few hours without any fresh intake of water. Plus I always feel that drinking tea kind of make me feel slightly dehydrated after awhile. So this is why I’ve been drinking water first thing in the morning vs drinking tea first. It also makes me feel a lot fresher when I do this.

Popular practice in Japan and India
I also read that drinking water first thing in the morning is actually popular in Japan and India. Perhaps some of you can help verify this information. It is also said that they actually drink water even before they brush their teeth and then wait about 45 minutes before consuming any food or other beverages. In fact, it appears that they try to stomach like one litre of water each morning!

Drink water with lemon
Personally, one or two glass maybe just about right for me; anything more will make me feel bloated. Some people also reported that they drink water with lemon first thing in the morning, claiming that this helps to lighten their skin tone by one or two shades! For me, drinking water with lemon makes me go hungry real easily!

Good habit to kick start the day
So are you already drinking water first thing when you wake up every morning? If not, will you take up this challenge? It’s definitely a good habit to kick start each day. Plus don’t forget we should be drinking as much water as possible to keep our skin healthy!

    Hi!

I agree with what you say.. A tall glass of water first thing in the morning does good for ur system.. here in India.. ppl have lime juice and honey in luke warm water.. but my nutritionist asks me to have a fruit before anything else.. this has def improved my digestion.. hence i have better skin!

ngm82: Wow, taking a fruit should be good but I can’t do it. My husband does that sometimes…eating a plate of water melon r drinking fruit juice the first thing in the morning. He tells me that it’ll help my skin too but I just can’t stomach them.

  2. JackieA says:

Water first thing in the morning also helps with bowel movement (ahem)!! I think this is an easy challenge and the benefits are many.

JackieA: Oh yes, it does help with the bowel movement! ?

  3. Florence says:

keke,is me again! Water water! I can’t live without, and is my daily routine in the morning! When I wake up, the 1st I do is to drink 1 glass of water 1st then do my thing in the kitchen. Then after finished, I will drink 2nd glass of water again & then to the toilet ……

Florence: Hey I think your lifestyle is very healthy! Really envy you!

  4. Dee says:

Oooh I love water! Is a must and is good for the body!!! Yay! =)

Dee: Good for you! I can’t say I love water but I can’t do without it for sure!

  5. Ms. Blacklace says:

Lol. I drink green tea first thing every morning. Maybe I should try drinking water.

BUt usually at night before I go to bed, I drink a cup of cold water. Cools my core body temperature so I won’t feel warm when I go to bed. And I’ll wake up to clear and plump skin! Placebo effect maybe?

Ms Blacklace: I used to drink black tea first thing in the morning but find it a little dehydrating. I think green tea might be less so but I only drink this in the afternoon. You drink cold water right before sleeping? No problem with puffy eyes in the morning? I have that problem even just drinking cool water before going to bed. I need about half an hour difference to prevent puffy eyes.

  6. pipsila says:

Within the past two weeks, I’ve been trying to drink at least 2 litres of water daily (including 1 cup of water each morning on an empty stomach), but it’s such an annoyance, ‘cos I’ve been peeing non-stop every day.

Pipsila: I know what you mean! I drank close to 2.5 litres yesterday and visited the toilet every hour!

  7. Leon says:

I always try to drink lots of water but I end up drinking very little, my hubby loves water, this is something he needs every one hour.

Regarding the water drinking practice, I am not aware, I have been living in India for the past fifteen years but I have never seen anyone drink water before brushing. But my hubby drinks some water after brushing not as a practice but I guess he feels thirsty, lol

And my hubby also drinks lemon juice with honey in the morning but just ten minutes before breakfast.

Leon: You don’t drink so much water? I thought you would drink a copious amount…haha… Is it cos you get busy and forget cos that’s what happens to me sometimes. Lemon juice and honey is nice but makes me hungry quickly!

  8. prettybeautiful says:

hey guess what?! hehehe i have been having a habit of drinking water once i get up. and about 6 months ago i started drinking royal jelly honey once im awake. and being loyal to it till now, i did see some effects. for one and most importantly, my sinus improved alot! ?

Prettybeautiful: Royal jelly honey is good stuff! Hmm…helps with your sinus? Maybe I should ask my husband to try cos he has this sinus problem all the time.

  9. Jenn says:

This is certainly a challenge for me! I am used to sleeping early – 10.30pm everyday, so your last challenge was ok. But, thing is, I don’t drink water! Yes, weird, but I just don’t drink water. I can go w/o drinking water the whole day! Nowadays, I try to hydrate myself by drinking green tea. I know its bad, not drinking water, but I just can’t swallow water.. Weird, huh?

Jenn: Actually drinking green tea is considered as fluid so that’s fine too. It doesn’t have to be just plain water. But if you can’t take plain water, you may like to try by adding a slice of lemon. That might help?

  10. prettybeautiful says:

yeah u should ask him to try. it may not work its magic for first few months, but eventually can see some results. i have been having sinus all my life and gosh, i will not give up on anything that MIGHT work. + royaljelly tastes good too! hehehe

Prettybeautiful: It taste good? Then I want to try too! ?

  11. Leon says:

Hey dear, I always try to but can’t drink a lot like others do. Water is so wonderful for health as well as beauty but I just can’t seem to drink lots. Your post has already inspired me and I have kept a bottle right next to my work table so I hope I remember to drink water frequently.

Leon: Hey that’s great! So happy to know that this post has inspired you to want to drink more water! ?

  12. prettybeautiful says:

yeah it tastes good. but make sure u choose a pure royal jelly, not those that has been diluted or with added sugar. i got mine from a local organic shop. the real one shouldnt taste as sweet as the normal honey

Prettybeautiful: Ah I see…thanks for telling me that! ? I’ll bear that in mind when I do get it down the road.

  13. Vonvon says:

Yes, I do that most of the time. and I normally drink warm water. And now I’m mixing Millennium powder into the water to drink first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

Vonvon: Hey, you’re another healthy lady! Millennium powder sounds like powerful!

  14. Mollie says:

I’ve always been a big water person, but I’ve never tried drinking first thing when I wake up. I’ve been told by many people that I need to be drinking more water, but I never seem to drink enough because I just sip at a water bottle all day. So, thanks for reminding me to drink more & I’ll be sure to try the empty stomach trick!

    -Mollie

Mollie: That’s great! I’m glad you’re thinking of drinking more. Drinking more water (or fluid) is always good for our health.

  15. Ms. Blacklace says:

Haha! I have eye bags that are always there even if I don’t drink water before I sleep. Not much of a difference actually. Maybe it’s because I don’t retain much water.

Ms Blacklace: Ah…probably different absorption process for different pple?

  16. andrea says:

drinking alot of water does help your skin look great, also you will feel better

Andrea: Yes it’s true! Good thing water is cheap!

  17. Moneypenny says:

I have heard about drinking a glas of (warm or cold) water mixed with 2 ts apple vinegar and 1 ts honey (both high quality). Drink before breakfast by sipping slowly.

It sounds a bit awkward but in fact isn’t that bad. The benefits: it’s supposed to stimulate your digestion and helps as a fatburner.

Moneypenny: Ah yes…I have read about vinegar and honey but I’m trying to imagine the taste…

  18. astrorainfall @ beauty box says:

I have heard that a sprinkly of cayenne pepper and some lemon juice in water is a great way to cleanse the body of toxins first thing in the morning. I think this is from the Master Cleanse programme. Cayenne pepper in water sounds a bit strange but I tried it and it is really subtle. But I am a great believer in drinking not one but two glasses of water, or more if I can manage when I wake up. I think it stops me from eating too much at breakfast too. Great challenge, Sesame!!

Astrorainfall: Cayenne pepper? Never come across this…have to google to find out what ingredient this is. Hey, I try to drink two glasses too if I have the time cos by the time I finish the second, I have to visit the toilet immediately. ?

  19. farah says:

since im on diet..plain water was my bestfrenz..i drink about 3L a day..water so good n my skin more supple n moisturized ?

Farah: Wow 3L is a lot! Keep it going!

  20. alixana says:

When drinking water, one must sip, not gulp it down. I’ve been told by several TCM practitioners and even western doctors that gulping down too much water is actually bad for your health. The water isn’t absorbed into your system, but is quickly flushed out by your kidney/liver (can’t remember which).

The best is to slowly sip every time you take a drink, but that can be difficult for people who are in a rush. Another way is to divide a glass of water into several portions. Drink 1/5 when you wake up, drink another 1/5 after you brush your teeth, drink another 1/5 when preparing breakfast, etc…

Alixana: Hey, this is good info! Hmm…I think there should be some truth to this afterall gulping down anything isn’t that good.

  21. Eva says:

Hi, I just want to say that drinking too much water is not good for your health. There was a time in the 90´s when drinking a lot of water was considering as a health benefit, but in some cases it led to urinary incontinence for young women. It´s also important to keep the levels of differnt salts in your body and drinking too much water will flush these important salts out of the body. And my last point is that bottled water is not a very enviromental friendly habit. We are living in a time when we try to lower the levels of CO2. It is ok if you are living somewhere where you can´t drink the tap water. But it´s always much better to filter the water at home. Good drinking water should be basic with a PH 7. How much water you should drink is also depending of what you´re eating. If you´re eating much fruits and vegetables you don´t need to drink that much water. It´s not good to have to go to the toilet several times a day as somebody above.

Eva: Hey, thanks for sharing this useful info. Filtered water is good but not everyone has that installed so bottled is the next best thing. I guess achieving a balance in terms of eating and drinking is probably the best…

  22. ven says:

Water is really the best remedy for constipation. For those having constipation problem try drinking few glasses of warm water, drink in a small quantity at a time, you might feel slightly bloated but its okay..try to run some errands by walking around a bit,you can see the difference in your bowel movement..no more painful constipation.Do it frequently..Eating papaya the night helps a lot as well.

    Ven: Yup, I agree…

  23. jackson says:

drinking water with a lemon makes you hungrier because it boosts your matabalism..

  25. urooj says:

is it healthy to drink water before goin to bed ?

  26. sesame says:

It’s okay for health but usually not advisable cos your eyes will look swollen the day after due to the water retention.

  27. aneesha says:

I drink water almost everyday and i usually drink 4-5 liters of water and sometimes fruit juice but my friends said fruit juice is not good as drinkin water is it true????????????????????

  28. sesame says:

Fruits juices are good too…they have antioxidant benefits. Strike a balance between both I say.

  29. ktee says:

i drink a big glass of warm water upon waking every morning and the practice has help my digestive system. I usually move my bowel within half an hour after that and then i drink another big glass of water with spirulina. Lately, i have taken to drinking 1 to 2 cups of green tea plus having a big bowl of fresh fruits everyday and my skin benifited tremendously.

  30. sesame says:

That’s a great move! I’ll love to start the day with some fresh fruits but I haven’t got round to doing it due to the lack of time. I have to try eating fruits in the morning.

  31. ktee says:

A big glass of unsweetened homemade soy smoothie mixed with fruits such as kiwi, apple, banana etc is tasty and full of health benefits. That was my breakfast for a few months.. You may want to try it. However, i heard that taking too much soy milk might be too cooling for some.

  32. sesame says:

I can’t drink too much soy…but this sounds full of wholesome goodness.

  33. rainbow says:

Could you advise when is the best time throughout the day to drink 2 litres of water daily? I have heard it is no good to drink water after meals, is it true? I have tried to drink a glass of warm water daily, but still have some problem to clear my bowel.

  34. sesame says:

You should try to drink one glass of warm water first thing in the morning. Other times would be in between meals.

You may need to do more to clear your bowel. Your system is probably sluggish. Either consider a detox supplement or take probiotics. Do you eat fruits? Kiwi can help with bowel issues too.

I don’t drink any plain water at all during a day. I drink a coke at lunch and thats about it! How do I start adding water into my diet?? Any suggestions and help will be greatly appreciated….

  37. sesame says:

You should try to drink in the morning and in between meals. You can start gradually.

  38. Pomme says:

Im a huge water guzzler so drinking water is no problem for me at all. Apart from the additional glass or two daily as well as my upon-rising elixir which is a teaspoon of raw honey with 1000mg of royal jelly, I drink 3 litres of water every single day and I would usually squeeze in a whole lemon into my water bottle and drink about 300ml per hour. Since I also take a multivitamin and B12 tinges the urine yellow, I use the yellowness as a ‘gauge’ to make sure that my body isnt dehydrated and that by the end of the day, my urine is crystal clear.

  39. sesame says:

Wow, that’s sounds like a lot of water you drink. But it’s good.

  40. Cass says:

Yeah, I drink a liter of warm water with 1/2 a lemon and 1/4 tsp of MSM powder every morning before I eat ANYTHING. Then I wait an hour, then eat.
