La Soie Silk Nano Sunscreen SPF30 PA+++

This La Soie Silk Protein Nano Gold with SPF30 PA+++ is a very interesting sunscreen positioned as natural but does not titanium dioxide or zinc oxide which are commonly used in natural formulations of sunscreens. So the million dollar question is: is it effective?

Before I answer that, let’s look at what La Soie Silk Nano Gold Sunscreen is made of.

Natural formulation developed by a Korean scientist
This sunscreen combines Silk Crystal, Silk Micro Powder, Nano Gold and natural Polyphenol.  The Silk Crystal is developed by a Korean scientist who has found a way to squeeze out every drop of goodness from the silk fibres without using any heat (source: Business Times article).  In addition, the sunscreen is pumped up with nano gold, which is antioxidant rich gold that has been ‘blasted’ into nano particles for easier absorption.

Various benefits of silk on skin
The benefits of silk in skin care products include its high anti-bacterial, antioxidant properties, plus its collagen-like benefits.  Silk has a natural sun protection ability and provides effective protection against the harmful effects of UV rays.  In addition, its versatility as an emulsifier and preservative means that there is no need to add any artificial ingredients into the product.

La Soie Silk Protein Sunscreen Ingredients

Good texture with sebum control
I was initially hesitant about using this sunscreen because of the alcohol content.  However, I caved in since the alcohol were plant derived and they were not high up on the ingredient list.  And I’m very glad I tried this because it’s got a wonderful texture, leaving no greasiness or whitecast at all.  In fact, it even helps to offer sebum control, which means my T-zone does not secrete that much oil by the end of the day.   The nano particles do not bother me that much since this is a natural formulated sunscreen.   The only thing I don’t quite like about it is the scent, which I can’t describe but is kind of strong to me.

Product has been in the market for two years
I can’t say with guarantee that this sunscreen offers me 100% protection since I’m always avoiding the sun and do not deliberately head out for a sun burn.  The only thing I can say is that at least I don’t see more pigmentation.  In addition, this sunscreen was recommended by Dr Christine Cheng of Divine Medspa who also runs Simply Aesthetic Clinic; so I am inclined to believe its effectiveness.  I’ve also been told that La Soie has been in the market for awhile; just that the products are sold under private labels across other clinics.

Price and availability
La Soie Silk Protection Nano Gold SPF30 PA+++ Sunscreen is available at Divine MedSpa in Singapore for S$105.  If you’re interested, you can call 6732 5578 for enquiries.

Update:  This sunscreen does contain a chemical sunscreen ingredient – octinoxate!  My apologies for not noticing that because I was just paying attention to the description on the tube.  Thanks to Jen for pointing that out.

Sounds very interesting! How does this compare to MV for you?

    sesame Reply:

I actually like the texture of this one better than MV cos it does not leave any whitecast nor leave my skin dry when applied alone. With MV’s, I need to ensure I have a moisturizer or oil beneath.

However, in terms of ingredients, I really prefer MV’s.

Is the ingredient list on the box for the sunscreen? If so you might want to take a second look at the ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate. It is also known as octyl methoxycinnamate or octinoxate i.e. a chemical sunscreen that is mostly effective against UVB rays only.

Hey Jen: Thanks for highlighting that one. I have missed that! Yes, you’re right…it is a chemical sunscreen ingredient which makes this not so natural afterall. I’m not familiar with this version of the name but octinoxate rings a bell!

Hmm…I’ve got to re-assess this one again…but what I forgot to mention in my review was the long ingredient list; something I’m usually not comfortable with as there are so many stuff I can’t recognise.

Sesame, you’re welcome. :) It just happened to ring a bell from when I was just starting to research sunscreens from a long time ago.

Hey Jen: I’m keen to know if you’ve come across any good natural sunscreens since you mentioned you’ve been looking into sunscreens. I’m currently using one from Marie-Veronique Organics – like it but because of curiosity, I always like to check out new ones.

M-V is my favorite, but I’m so glad you asked, because I just stumbled upon this notepad on makeupalley

    http://www.makeupalley.com/user/notepad/zincsunscreens

I’ve tried UV Naturals (hard to spread), Keys (nice but I’m concerned about the nano zinc), Kabana Green Screen (gloppy texture and somewhat ugly packaging, but at that time they were just starting out so they may have improved) and Mexitan (not waterproof at all). Right now I’m DIY-ing with a mix of zinc powder and jojoba oil and it seems to be working out fine although I don’t exactly sun myself often :) I’ll probably be rotating the M-V with the DIY for the foreseeable future.

The link above will come in handy when I feel ready to experiment again …

Thanks for the link – I’ll check it out soon!

Oh, you use MV too? I really like the Creme de Soliel but the Creme de Jour is drying for me…not too suitable in the long run. I totally agree with you about UV Natural especially for the body. I have only used it on my face and hands but recently, I used it on my husband and found it difficult to apply.

  5. Jojo C Says:

    Hi Sesame,

I also like MV cos of the ingredients in it, I am currently using creme de jour, even thought I massage some oil underneath before applying creme de jour, my skin stills become quite dry in a few hours. Do you have the same experience? I see that you prefer creme de soliel, i haven’t tried it before, wondering if you still need to massage oil before you apply creme de soliel? Or is it much more hydrating then creme de jour?

    sesame Reply:

Creme de Jour is drying for me too. I like Creme de Soliel. It’s okay for me with moisturizer or oil underneath. My skin is combination but my cheek area is quite dry.

  6. Annemarie de Koning Says:

I see 3 sunscreen ingredients. All of them starting with ethylhexyl.

  7. stiffedneck Says:

I’m using the tinted Creme de Jour now, actually I use it less than my other ones since it IS hard to spread and its dry. I guess I should buy the Creme de Soliel next time.

So Sesame, would you use this La Soie Silk Protein Nano Gold Sunblock in the long run?

    sesame Reply:

I am still thinking…it has good texture but I was mistaken that it is completely natural because I didn’t read the box carefully. I still like Creme de Soliel so might continue with that instead. Creme de Jour is drier for me…now I use it more for my hands.

  8. stiffedneck Says:

I think I should switch to Creme de Soliel next since the Creme de Jour is pretty hard to spread. I never tried the regular version before so I don’t know, but the tinted one that I’m using is a bit pink for my skin tone. Whenever I use it, if people look closely, they can see the difference around the hairline and especially my neck. That’s why I need an extra of 10 min each time I use the Creme de Jour to blend out.

    sesame Reply:

The Creme de Soliel’s texture is not a lot different from Creme de Jour…so not sure if you’ll like it if your issue is about the spreading.
