Review: Muji Cleansing Oil For Sensitive Skin

Muji Cleansing Oil For Sensitive Skin

I haven’t found anything that beats cleansing oil in terms of the cleansing abilities. While many, including myself, prefer to follow up with a foaming cleanser, it’s actually possible to just rely on one cleansing oil to remove your makeup and even keep your face thoroughly cleansed.

There are a multitude of such products in the market these days, but the popular ones are still of Japanese origin. Surprisingly though, I haven’t tried many. The last one I used was my own DIY makeup cleansing oil.

Free of mineral oil, alcohol, paraben and fragrance
Anyway, awhile back, I finally picked up the Muji Cleansing Oil For Sensitive Skin. I bought the 50ml bottle to try and I must say, I’m completely sold and am now ready for the 200ml.   I can’t remember the prices but it was definitely under S$8 for the 50ml and under S$20 for the 200ml.  Update: it’s only $5.90 for the 50ml and $13 for the 200ml!  Totally affordable right?  There is another one or two other versions of cleansing oil from Muji but this one for sensitive skin is great because it does not contain mineral oil, alcohol, paraben and fragrance.   I can’t recall the ingredients as they’re listed on the big bottle but there’s olive oil for sure.

A bit thick but leaves no greasy residue
I only need one pump to remove my makeup.   It’s not very greasy and because it’s quite thick, I like to use this when my hands are slightly damp.  It doesn’t emulsify much, but it doesn’t leave a sticky layer of residue on the skin either.  However, I usually follow up with a foaming cleaner so that was never an issue for me.  It does have a faint smell, but nothing of a major concern since it’s not unpleasant.

Good for removing makeup
In terms of removing makeup, I think this works great for me but because I don’t use waterproof mascara so I have no idea if this will remove that.  However, based on the comments I picked up from the beauty forums, some gals are even saying that this is better than the cleansing oils from Shu Uemura and Fancl.

Good value for the price tag
Well, I don’t know since I’ve never used those before.  I may try Fancl’s because of their ingredients but I doubt I’ll ever try Shu Uemura’s or Shiseido’s.   Still, compared to Fancl, I’ll rather go for Muji Cleansing Oil because of the affordability factor.  This product is very utilitarian, but it definitely has got great value!

The cost is very alluring for an gentle cleansing oil, we have Muji here but too bad no Muji skin care, and I hv no idea when I’ll visit S’pore again. “b

  2. Synaesthesia says:

BT.. tat’s what I’m thinking to say… I just can’t remember seeing any MUJI in my area…

  3. Jyoan says:

Wow! The price is so attractive. And I like that it says “for sensitive skin” too. Where can we get Muji Cleansing Oil in Singapore?

  4. sesame says:

BT, if I remember correctly, you’re based in Thailand right? If that’s so, there are apparently Muji stores in that country. Check it out here http://www.muji.com/storelocator/#.

  5. sesame says:

Jyoan, Muji is at Marina Square, Paragon, ION and Bugis. Check out details here:
    http://www.muji.com/storelocator/#/Asia/Singapore.
But a reader just emailed me to tell me she couldn’t find the cleansing oil for sensitive skin at ION. I got mine at Paragon and also saw it at Marina Square.

  6. sesame says:

Synaesthesia, are you in Malaysia? If so, I think Muji is not there.

  7. Blovet Beauty says:

oohh… I love this topic!! I find cleansing oils in general from japan very excellent. They remove makeup in a snap and don’t irritate the skin!! I’ve currently used up my sana oil cleanser(finishes too fast!) and I got to get this one to try. Can’t splurge on another shu bottle just yet. Thanks for this recommendation sweetie :))

  8. ronica says:

after reading this i am tempted to get the muji cleansing oil for sensitive skin but i am also scare that after using my face will break out just like the last time i bght the Fancl one to try! I like the fancl one but too bad it gives me break out!!! Might get Muji one since is for sensitive skin ?

  9. Jyoan says:

Okay! Thanks! Cos I’ve never seen any Muji skincare before… … So no idea that this brand exists. haha. Love Japanese things. =)

  10. sesame says:

I used Sana before…it’s not bad in terms of feel and cleansing abilities but I realized mid bottle that it contains mineral oil. Words in Japanese…didn’t understand. So I don’t use that anymore. This is a better option for longer term usage.

  11. sesame says:

Oh your face broke out from using Fancl’s? If I’m not wrong, theirs is quite gentle too right…suppose to be preservative free?

Anyway, if you get this, I suggest you try the 50ml first and if it works for you, then you buy the bigger one.

  12. sesame says:

I never took note of their skincare line till last year actually. Was afraid to try cos most of the words in Japanese! I asked for feedback in one of my older posts and some told me this is good so I decided to try. If you use cotton facial pads, try Muji’s too…I like it. It’s bleach free.

  13. sesame says:

Here’s the entry I wrote about the cotton pads if you’re interested to know:

This looks interesting – I didn’t know we had Muji skin care here, but then again, I haven’t stepped into Muji in a while.

Also, I agree with you that the Japanese cleansing oils really do seem to be the most effective.

I’ve tried, Biore, Whitist and the l’oreal cleansing oils and must say the whitist one came out the winner. It’s around S$18 for 180ml. The Muji one looks to be in the same price range. This gives me a reason to go to Bugis now…heh ?

P.S. Since you focus a lot on organic and natural products, I was wondering if you’d seen/tried any of the Dr. Bronner’s products on the shelves (I’ve seen them at several Guardian outlets).

I saw this cleansing oil when I was in tokyo this year! Saw it at Bugis too. However, I didn’t buy to try.

I started to use cleansing oil this year. Bought a random virgin olive oil one from a drugstore (actually its huge with loads of cosmetics and makeup) in Tokyo. I love it!!!

Its not too thick, easy to spread on my face. So, I don’t need to spend too much time rubbing and feeling that I rubbed the makeup into my pores.

And it emulsify totally into white liquid, leaving no oily residue. My skin is actually nice and soft after that. However, being kiasu, I still use a cleanser after that. And of course, my trusty cleansing toner.

was browsing through this week’s i-weekly lifestyle booklet.. they recommended this Aqua japanese cleanser for gentle yet effective exfoliation.. Cure natural aqua gel

  17. sesame says:

Yes, I tried their liquid soap and soap bar. I have a review here: https://www.vivawoman.net/2008/05/13/review-dr-bronners-magic-all-in-one-soap/

But I noticed that their stocks are not replendished quickly. Some of the liquid soaps are constantly out of stock!

  18. sesame says:

Cleansing oil are a great invention. But I’m like you – prefer to double cleanse. I think many Japanese women and Korean women do that too.

  19. sesame says:

Yes, it looks like an interesting product. I wrote about it twice although I’ve personally not used it. https://www.vivawoman.net/2008/11/17/cure-natural-aqua-gel-giveaway/

  20. stiffedneck says:

Someone gave me a bottle of Shu, and I’m afraid to use since I’m breaking out now. But I think I might try the Muji one. Sucks for me that I have to order it online since I doubt we have it in the States.

  21. everbluec says:

Thanks for the recommending… think I’m going to try this oil cleansing out!!!! #k8SjZc9Dxk__#k8SjZc9Dxk

  22. sesame says:

Hey, Muji is apparently in States but I don’t know if they carry the same range. Check out locations here:
    http://www.muji.com/storelocator/#/NorthAmerica/U.S.A.

  23. sesame says:

I hope you’ll like it if you try.

  24. BT says:

I didn’t see any Muji skin care from my last visit to Muji store some time ago, but yesterday I visited the store again, ya, the store has been expanded and having skin care line here, so happy that I bought the cleansing oil too. Thanks so much for the review.

  25. sesame says:

    I hope you’ll like it!

  26. pf1123 says:

I checked out Muji at Bugis yesterday. ?

Saw they have a brochure for their Brightening range of skincare.

They recommend to use their cotton pads to peel into 4 layers and use their lotion and spread on the face like mask. Same as what the Japanese guru taught. ?

But I kinda hesitate to try their skin care. I don’t buy stuff from companies who don’t specialize in making them. I guess its a mental thingy…heheh…

  27. sesame says:

I was at Muji at Marina Square which is having a sale. I bought the 200ml cleansing oil for sensitive skin at slightly above $11 (retails at $13). I don’t mind that but I won’t buy others cos their ingredients are not what I’m looking for. Didn’t see the brightening range there though.

  28. valerie says:

Hi I was just wondering..would it be necessary to still use cleansing oil even if I dont wear make up or sunblock.. i tried used sunblock but it makes my skin oiler..and I think it breaks out even if I am using my fancl one. yeap.. cause this lady told me that even though I dont when I come back from school or work I should still remove with a remover and than wash my face what do you think?:))

  29. sesame says:

Yes, tht’s consider double cleansing and it’s quite a good practice. Many Japanese and Koreans do this. The cleansing oil can be used on your face with makeup or without as it’s function is to remove impurities too.

Do you use a foaming cleanser? If so, just make sure it is gentle enough and does not make your skin dry. You can cleanse with cleansing oil first, then wash with a gentle foaming cleanser. Alternatively, you can use the cleansing oil by itself too cos it emulsifies a little.

  30. valerie says:

Oh that sounds good. thanks. I shall try it out when I can go down to get it. And yeap, I am using one of the no preservative bar soaps though… but I try if I can to use it with the foam puff to puff it up before putting it on my face… i used to be so careful with making sure I always use foam cleansing but lately I’ve been quite slacked about it haha.. keeping my skin good is not easy haha.

  31. Carol says:

Can I use Muji cleansing oil under my eyes? Thanks!

  32. sesame says:

Yes, it can be used around the eye area to remove eye makeup too but not heavy ones.
