Beauty and brain: follow left or follow right?

TGIF and let’s have a discussion today on beauty and brain!

Do you know which part of your brain makes your beauty decision?  Is it your right brain that is focused on aesthetics and emotions or is it your left brain that is focused on logics and facts?  Let’s see…

My left brain tells me:
– I like what I see in the ingredient list!
– The scientific studies backing up the claims look good!
– The affordable price point is attractive.
– The product is not fanciful but it’s functional.
– I’m not sure I want to try something I’ve not heard of.
– The promotion is attractive but I don’t need the extras.

My right brain tells me:
– The testimonies I read about the product sound good.
– I like the celebrity endorsement!
– I must buy because the product packaging is so pretty!
– Have to get it because it’s said to be a miracle product!
– I don’t need it but this is the latest so I must have it!
– Oooh the promotion is simply irresistible!

But I just can’t decide
Typically, while one side of your brain maybe more dominant, most decisions are really made using our whole brain.  But, there are probably many a times when you struggled with a decision because your left brain is in conflict with your right brain?   So this is probably why you visit a store, stand in front of the counter for half an hour poring over every single item in the range but still walked out of the store empty handed because “I JUST CAN’T MAKE UP MY MIND!”

Well, mine certainly do and during those times, my brain runs amok. I’m more of a right brain person but I’ll share with you my current left brain right brain struggle on the topic of beauty.

My left brain and right brain struggle
Although I’ve been saying that I prefer to use sunscreens of natural formulations, but I’m also struggling with the fact that they may not offer the best sun protection for my thin skin.  Rationally, with the state of my skin, I should follow my left brain’s call to go for those European chemical sunscreens with high PPD.  Yet, emotionally, I just can’t bring myself to do that on a daily basis because it’ll betray my right brain’s desire of going all natural and organic!  So my left brain is fighting with my right brain constantly although my right brain won in this case.

What’s yours like?
So tell me, are you more right or left brain?  Are your right brain and left brain working in harmony when it comes to making your beauty decision?  Do they fight often?  And what do they fight about most recently?

For me, it’s sometimes more “left than right” and sometimes vice versa. I’ve been known to wander around for over an hour at times, much to my friends’ annoyance.

  2. LOLanne says:

i would say im a left brain decision maker more. most of the time i research, ask around, check out ingredient lists etc before i buy a product… sadly though there are times that the packaging wins me over. ?

btw, im a new follower of your blog! you have such informative posts <3

  3. Nat says:

I wish to think that I’m a left brainer. After reading this I finally knew what both sides specialised in XD I never studied biology! Anyway a lot of products have nice packaging now esp organic ones ? makes me happy!! My most recent was a sunscreen I bought. I liked the ingredients (left) & it was highly recommended (right).

  4. Amanda says:

Hmm I think I use to be more of a right brain person, but lately I’ve moved towards being more of a left brain person.

They do conflict constantly, and I spend hours looking at the same/similar products and just can’t decide which one to get.

I usually end up empty handed!

  5. BT says:

My left brain does product filteration, right brain makes purchase decision. Recently they both robbed my cash account terribly. I think cosmetic companies are always smarter, so many ‘perfect’ products that ‘fit’ my budget. Haha. (TvT)

  6. sesame says:

So it depends on situations I suppose…

  7. sesame says:

You’re welcome! Come back often! ?

I think pretty packaging creates a good impression and that aids in the purchase decision.

  8. sesame says:

It’s not absolute…but the clever advertisers makes use of both sides to sell their products. ?

  9. sesame says:

It would be a lot easier if it’s one side dominant all the time…but this is good for your pockets too.

  10. sesame says:

Haha…the companies are smart to tap on both sides to sell their products!

  11. Ms. Blacklace says:

more of a lefty than a righty. Righty spots the product first. Lefty decides yes or no.

  12. Blovet Beauty says:

Hey sesame, I think I use both sides to buy any beauty related products. But I seem to be leaning towards left brain more…I’m always thinking about how many good reviews I’ve read on it and its very much a calculated decision…hahah

  13. sesame says:

    Aha…that’s interesting!

  14. sesame says:

    That’s good…you’re being prudent. ?

  15. Dee says:

My friend always called me a right brainer since I’m more of a visual person. But I think we all jump around. But thanks to reviews and blogs like yours I think I may be starting to be more left brained, haha.

  16. chenyze says:

right brain right brain! i get so easily “conned” by marketing and “miracle ingredients”. that’s quite unfortunate though heh.

  17. sesame says:

I’m like you – more visual oriented too! I think that’s why we’re in beauty blogging! ?

  18. sesame says:

Haha…me too…they still get my attention although some of them sound too good to be true!

  19. Diane says:

I usually use my left brain to decide on a product…but a good promotion sparks my right brain to buy a lot and empty my wallet! ?

  20. toh88 says:

    unsure abt myself though.

I am a left-hander and I was told majority people’s left side of brain is more active!

so being a left-hander, my friends said I am smarter than them! I beg to differ! cos I cant simply find any clue in me that I am smarter than any of my friends.

I guess myself is “controlled” much by my left side – my master hand is also left

  21. eliza says:

hmmm most of the time i follow my left brain’s signals and sometimes it clashes with the right brain especially when it comes to pretty packages @@

women will always be women hahahaha

from what i remembered from biology class in secondary, right hand people are often controlled by the left brain and vice versa.

  22. Jyoan says:

I am more of right I think. I can buy on the spot based on the then feeling. Lol. It’s very bad for the pocket.

But then again, some times, I can go home and visit the shop up to 3 times again, before I finally buy the item. Need time to think.

  23. sesame says:

Haha…so right brain is bad for our pockets!

  24. sesame says:

Oh that’s an interesting theory that I’ve never heard of.

  25. sesame says:

I never paid attention during my biology lessons so I can’t recall learning that. But I’m right handed and tend to be more right brain. Or maybe not?

  26. sesame says:

Yeah, the general consensus seem to be that the right brain is bad for our pockets.

  27. omgkaiti says:

hmm, i think my brain tends to be on the “right” side. lol. but i do end up reading all the ingrediants but when i look at the bottle and its so pretty the ride side takes over.

Probably something i should work on…

  28. sesame says:

Haha…achieving a balance is good but sometimes the right side is so domineering! LOL
