Are you suffering from hormonal imbalance?

hormonal imbalance

Apart from some hormonal chin acne in the past, I never really had to battle with major acne issues. However, since last year, my skin condition started to deteriorate and suddenly, horrors of horrors, I was developing acne rather frequently.

It started with new areas that I never had problems with, such as cheek acne and now, I’ve to deal with jaw acne as well. I am quite certain that these were not a result of the products I’m using, but rather, because of some of my poor dieting habits – eating loads of chocolate – and late nights. But it looks like it’s could be more than that. My skin has gone haywire and while it is dry on the outside, it’s still very oily inside! So I’m most likely suffering a hormonal imbalance more than anything else.

So what exactly is hormonal imbalance and who is likely to be affected by this?

Hormone production can vary every month
Apparently, hormone imbalance is caused by too much estrogen in a woman’s body, an excess which is not balanced by progesterone. It doesn’t help that these hormones can vary every month, depending on factors such as ovulation, birth control, stress, nutrition and exercise. In addition, symptoms of hormone imbalance in women tend to increase as a woman ages and may begin as early as the late 20’s. I believe child birth also affects our hormone production to a large extent.

Common symptoms of hormone imbalance
This explains why I suddenly develop skin allergies and acne, on top of having foggy thinking and worsened PMS. I’ve also become sensitive to what I eat and can’t eat processed foods or diary products as they contain chemicals that can interfere with the production of the two important hormones.  This was probably why I broke out so badly in the past week, after downing half a box of chocolates! Some other symptoms of hormone imbalance which I’ve yet to experience include depression, fatigue and anxiety, osteoporosis, urinary tract infections and incontinence, uterine fibroids, weight gain, water retention and bloating.

Online hormonal health profile test
I checked my hormonal health profile using an online resource and found out that I suffer from moderate symptoms of hormonal imbalance inspite of  my efforts to make healthy choices.  So I will need to get some medical attention before it becomes severe.  Going forward,  I have  options of undergoing hormone replacement therapy or using alternative medicine to efficiently produce natural hormones and I can say with certainty that I will opt for the latter option. However, I have not decided what I will use so I can’t recommend anything specific yet.

So do you know if you’re suffering from hormonal imbalance?   To find out, take the test from the free hormone health profile.

oh no, my symptons rank in the severe category. ?

  2. sesame says:

Hmm…it’s probably a guide but good to take notice earlier. Try to run a search on the types of food you can take to improve your hormone production. I read that foods high in Omegas are useful.

  3. ann says:

I used to suffer from many of the symptoms like insomnia, bloated, water retention and yeast infection in my late 20s. It’s been 2 years since starting TCM, watching my diet very carefully plus supplements and now the True Beauty treatments that I’m feeling ‘normal’ and a lot better.

Can’t stress to others how impt it is to watch for the signs and DO something abt it. Better early than late.

  4. BlovetBeauty says:

natural therapy sounds best to me ?

Stress in whatever manner can lead to outbreaks… personally ur situation reminded me of a time when i just moved overseas.. I was breaking out like never before cause everything around me was different… stress does that ><

  5. VeiraLing says:

I’ve been developing weird acnes & oil seeds on my face recently. I havent had breakouts since teenage years ?
    Couldnt quite figure out why.

Your article prompts me that this might be the cause of my problem, shall take the profile test and check out ?

  6. loveless says:

i agree with blovetbeauty, my acne started when I went overseas for a year old exchange program in school. since then the acne never really went away, my pms symptoms are getting worse with age. it doesn’t help that I’m on prescription medication which aggravates the hormone imbalance and acne. (can’t get off the medication yet as I have a severe chronic medication condition and until it stabilizes, i may just be able to manage it with a holistic lifestyle but chances are low.)
i read somewhere in a chinese magazine that the position of the acne on your face indicates which part of your body is unhealthy, unfortunately my mandarin is not proficient enough to understand the specifics. they didn’t provide a diagram to point out the areas only listing.
i’m not surprised that my results from the survey were “severe”, and I’m thinking of getting the yam cream to help matters. my mother swears by bai feng pills, but i’m not looking foward to downing more pills. tcm is a good choice, but i’m still looking for a good recommendation.
p/s i don’t believe in the chocolate causing acne thing. the problem probably lies in what quality of chocolate you are eating. most supermart and “speciality” stores sell chocolate of lower quality due to certain processing of the cocoa beans resulting in cheap but poorer quality of the cocoa oil etc. they add more sugars and dairy which dilute the cocoa and “bulk up” the product. if you go for goodness-to-honest dark chocolate (high quality and that’s not godiva or royce), 10g a day would be good for your heart as well. I used to have a fav, but the company has sadly stopped producing the 85% cocoa drak chocolate, which is very smooth and not at bitter on the tongue. still searching for a replacement, but the one at marks & spencer are not too bad.

  7. Ms. Blacklace says:

My symptoms of hormone imbalance would be depression.

Like what I am having now. Feel like… Shit… Like nothing is worth doing. Just… Bored.

But I know I’ll get back to my old self in a few weeks time.

  8. sesame says:

Insomnia can be quite bad…I agree with you that noticing the signs and doing something about it early is good as we should have a better quality of life rather than just live with all these…

  9. sesame says:

Yes, stress isn’t a good thing. At the least, it cause breakouts but for some people, it can actually aggravate into more serious conditions.

For me, while I have stress, but I believe my current breakout is due to what I can eaten to trigger the hormone imbalance or make it worst. I had a very stressful time last year but I never broke out so bad. Getting old too…

  10. sesame says:

Unfortunately, we women are plagued by this problem which causes more skin problems for us. If you have ruled out other possibilities and nothing else seems to be causing your breakout, it could be hormone imbalance.

  11. sesame says:

If you want to know the position causing the acne, click on my link on cheek acne – I have a diagram there…only problem is some of the colors are quite close so you need to examine carefully.

I’ve been eating bai feng wan since I was a teenager till my late 20s. My mom made me eat them. It was awful in the early days when it was one dark ball…I think it helped cos my health and my skin was very good then. As a whole, my skin never gave me much grief except for my pigmentation. But these 2 years, it’s really problematic.

Maybe you’re right about the chocolate. I hate the dark cocoa type of chocolates. Godiva’s taste bitter to me. I like Meiji and I love their strawberry ones. I never had problems eating lots of chocolates – used to eat them everyday. I think the chocolate trigger something that cause my hormone imbalance to worsen. Anyway, I realized that with age, I can’t take so much diary products now…

  12. sesame says:

Are you taking anything to keep it under control? Better to arrest it early cos such symptoms can worsen overtime.

  13. loveless says:

if you can’t let go of your chocolates, why don’t you try Choxi+ Dark Bar from Prestat. They have the dark choco with mint, milk choco and milk choco with orange favours as well. you can find them at Takashimaya B2, tucked discreetly on a shelf near Godiva and facing Harrods. here’s what they say on their website:
“Delightful Dark Chocolate bars made from carefully selected cocoa beans rich in antioxidants to give a balanced nutritional diet.

Choxi+ contains two to three times more flavanol antioxidants, making it a nutritional product while you enjoy the natural goodness of the chocolate bar. 10g of Choxi+ or two 5g squares provides all the antioxidants you need to last a whole day.

“Finally, a chocolate bar that really is good for you” – The Daily Mail Weekend

Whether you care about flavour or your health – this is the best dark chocolate money can buy. ”

I’m not quite sure about the anti-oxidants benefits, but their chocolate is good.
    just a chocolate-lover’s 2 cents of rambling.(=_=;;)

  14. rachel says:

thanks Sesame…for the hormone test…i am in the moderate rank…guess it’s time for me to really take care of my health… a good wake-up call to me…

  15. sesame says:

Wow, you’re quite a chocolate lover! ? But you’re right, they’re good when eaten in moderation. I’ll take a look at the Choxi+ you recommended next time – it sounds good to me!

  16. sesame says:

You can start by improving your lifestyle and taking food that can help you. I didn’t cover that here but if you run a search, you should be able to find the info.

  17. Berry says:

Hi I think you should try alkalinizing your diet as much as possible. Your problems could stem from overacidity in your blood. You have already identified dairy as being a culprit but you need to also cut down or eliminate meat (as this can have hormones) and drastically increase the amount of green vegetables that you eat. One of the books which I found to have a sensible approach to this is by Dr. Jeannette Graf: “Stop Aging, Start Living”.

  18. Dee says:

This is an interesting article. My profile came out Moderate, but I think if I were to take this assesment a few years ago, it probably would’ve been severe. Stress plays such a big part doesn’t it?

It’s been hard for me to sleep lately and I’m starting to stress out again so I’m noticing the acne starting to form on my chin and jawline. As well as gaining a little bit of weight. If you do find something that works, I can’t wait to read about it!

  19. minsin says:

During period hormone imbalance , and all the always I get minor breakout. I guess it is a process…

  20. sesame says:

I’ve been changing my diet but I still can’t resist certain diary products – like chocolates. I hardly eat red meat and my diet includes mostly white meat like fish or chicken. Trying to eat more greens too.

The book you mentioned sounds interesting! I will try to look it up. Thanks for sharing. ?

  21. sesame says:

Yes, stress affects our hormones too. My profile may be different too if I’ve tested it some years ago.

  22. sesame says:

Yes, it is part of the process and the problem is, most women can’t get away from this every month!

  23. Ms. Blacklace says:

My doctor gave me some prozac to take when needed. If it’s only for a few days then it’s ok. But if the “down time” lasts for weeks then I’ll need some real help.

  24. shaynaJo says:

hi.. i think i have the same problem recently too… i mean the past 2 months… it’s like suddenly my good skin has turned into a sad skin.. i have lots of acnes around my chin, big bumpy ones… but there r kinda controlled now after i applied tea tree oil on them…
and then, I realised that small small pimples/ whiteheads formed at my jaw line.. I think should have something to do with my hormones also and i’m so depressed with all these and is trying to find out the solution. Currently taking EPO to balance the hormone abit.. dunno if it’s gonna work well…
Can u share what do u do to control or get rid of those breakouts?

    thanks =)

  25. sesame says:

Acne around the chin is definitely linked to hormones. I’m also taking EPO but I don’t think it helps with my acne as it’s only good for my PMS.

For me, my outbreak is taking the wrong food that trigger hormone imbalance. Or not sleeping enough. So I need to control these two areas and my acne doesn’t flare up so bad. I never had to bother this much in the past though…

I can’t say for certainty what you can do – you need to identify what triggered those breakout. Have you been under stress? Have you been sleeping late? Or have you been eating something new?

  26. holly says:

You might even want to get checked for Celiac Disease. I was diagnosed recently, after having stomach & skin problems. It’s a food allergy to gluten, and it often goes undiagnosed.

  27. sesame says:

I’ve never heard of that. Need to run a check cos I do have some stomach issues.

  28. ada says:

    pls reply urgently

  29. sesame says:

You have to see a doctor to determine your condition.
