Do you get that last bit out of your bottle?

last drop of cream

This is slightly embarrassing to admit but I have a habit of getting every last bit from my skin care products, especially if they’re costly.  With tubes, it’s easy as I only need to cut them open.  But with other types of packaging, it’s not so straight forward.  The best that I can do is to tilt them upside down so that the cream or lotion can flow out and then using a cotton swab to dig the balance out.

However, not every product allows for this as some are in sealed storage which are impossible to open unless you saw them up – and it’s frustrating because you know there are still some goodies in there.  So most of them time, I end up throwing the product in the bin with much reluctance and annoyance.

So I’m curious…do you bother getting that last bit out or is it too much of a hassle to you?  Am I alone agonizing over the last bit of product in that container or are some of you like me too?  And if you’re like me, how do you get that last bit of product out of that container?

Yes, I do. haha. I have this strange habit to keep opening the bottles to check how much I have left along the way. (even when it’s still heavy, and I know there is a lot). That’s why I always prefer transparent packaging.

  2. sesame says:

Yup, I wish I can see what’s in there and how much is left. Some, I can’t even tell by the weight cos they’re eye gel for example, and very light.

With the slow speed I use skincare products (12mths to use up a 50ml moisturiser) , I get a bit “eeky” with the last bit. More often than not, there is still a good bit left (ard 3 to 5%) when I bin a skincare product and thats ok with me.

Of course I will try to use up to the very last bit if its expensive. But I get the feeling the last bit isnt so good anymore.

  4. BT says:

I did that too. However, it depends how much I love the product, regardless the price tag.

  5. ayn says:

hahaha! it’s not a bad habit at all… you just want to get the worth of the money you paid for ?

  6. AtelierGal says:

Most of my products are in bottle, jar or tube forms so not much difficulty. The tube ones are tricky, like toothpaste. I have to roll them like dollar bills just to get the last bit out.

  7. Yvette says:

i do the same thing too! i don’t like wasting things. one of my pet peeves.

I cut things open too, no matter what the product is. For glass containers, i have a little trouble with that.

  8. Amanda says:

I do try and get most of the product out. I usually leave it upside down and attempt to shake it out.

Sometimes it works, most times it doesn’t and I just end up throwing it away.

  9. pf1123 says:

I keep wondering if I really use too little product each time, such that my moisturiser/toner/serums can last up to 12months.

If anyone has any comments, please let me know. Thanks! ?

  10. stella says:

i use it all up too, tilting bottles in all angles to get the last bit. sometimes, i just unscrew them and leave the bottle overturned in a bigger jar to get every bit. frugality is as virtue, and waste is not cool! i do give up on that teeeeny bit if i don’t get to it tho’, it’s ok

  11. sesame says:

12 months is very long! But you have a good point that if the product is left too long. the last bit may not be that good.

  12. sesame says:

That’s true…it’s more of how much the product is worth in terms of quality too.

  13. sesame says:

    Heheh…I’m very thrifty!

  14. sesame says:

For tubes, it’s possible to cut them up…there’s usually quite a lot of product in there.

  15. sesame says:

For glass, at least you can still see the product. I usually turn it upside down and then bend a cotton swab to get the last bit out.

  16. sesame says:

I shake it too but with thick cream, it can be difficult…so I use a cotton swab.

  17. sesame says:

Moisturizer perhaps but toner and serum too? Hmm…I’m curious to know how you use them. But if you’ve applied sufficiently, then it should be fine. Anyway, some toners come in 200ml and that can take awhile.

  18. sesame says:

Come to think of it, I do this more with face care products. I don’t take much effort with body care or makeup. I actually waste quite a bit of makeup most of the time – like not finishing all my foundations and then moving on to new ones.

  19. Fabiola says:

I always use a moisturiser in tube form, as I think jars can be unhygienic and with pumps getting the last bit out is nearly impossible. I also usually cut the tube in half to get all the moisturiser out.

  20. sesame says:

That’s an interesting perspective…Many of the sunscreens and cleansers I’ve used were in tube form but I haven’t used a moisturizer in tube before though.

  21. pf1123 says:

I use a mattifying moisturiser for day and my collagen cream for night (both 50ml). I always use a pea size of my moisturiser, dot 4 dots on my face and spread all over. I just make sure that it covers my face and thats enough.

For Eucerin whitening serum (used in the day), its also a pea size. Its 30ml pump bottle but I think I have been using for a good 3 to 4 mths and its still half full.

For a hydrating serum (used at night), its half a squirt from the pump. 30ml. Used maybe for 2 mths and its probably got 2-thirds full.

My cleansing water is 200ml. I bought it last Nov and there’s still a quarter bottle left. I always put 2 drops on cotton pad. If I put too much, my face will become kind of “soapy”.

For sunscreen, I admit its not enough. I squeeze about the length of a third or half of my index finger. And a tube lasted 10mths or so.

The only thing I go through quickly is eye makeup remover. A 125ml bottle every 3mths. I love the luxurious feel of mascara and e/s melting off in 10secs. ?

Granted, I have lazy days and let my face take a rest and sometimes travel without my full size regular skincare. But it should not be more than 2mths in the 12mths. I still think they have lasted quite a long while.

I don’t like to put so much product that my face feels wet. And I will massage everything into my face. My beautician says that there is no point putting too much because the skin cannot absorb and might even cause clogged pores or oil seeds. But they are surprised that I only replenish products once a year.

What is your rate of using a 50ml moisturiser?

  22. pf1123 says:

Oh, but I use my cleansing water once a day (at night) to remove final trace of makeup.

I use P&J toner for about 3 mths and becoz I use it in the lotion mask method sometimes, it runs out quickly. Now I have switched to the Talika Balancing lotion in the morning. ?

  23. Blovet Beauty says:

I actually like to get the last bits out of my products unless it’s sealed tight in a glass bottle with a tiny head that leaves me no way to dig the contents out :)tats the current problem I am having…

  24. sesame says:

The creams I currently use is 30ml and last me about 5 months so I think a 50ml will last me 7 – 8 months? I don’t like to use a lot too but the only products that seem to last forever is my eye cream or eye gel! And I get impatient when there are no results and just move on to using new ones. So I have a couple of eye products that are unused.

I think if the product is good enough, it can be absorbed well and there is no need to apply excessive amount. Your beautician is right that over applying can result in clogged pores.

  25. sesame says:

Yeah, my current products are a bit like that. Can be unscrewed but has a tiny head and I can’t see the balance inside. ?

  26. Pink Ink says:

I’ll cut the tubes of my skincare too. Usually, I’ll cut about 1/3 of the tube from the sealed part, then I can use the cut end as a ‘cap’ as I may not be able to finish whatever’s stuck to the sides.

However, I really don’t know what to do with my Chanel serums that come with ‘vacuum’-type pumps. I can’t pry the top off.

  27. Jyoan says:

wow! pf1123, 12 months is really a very long time. I thought I am already using very slowly… … Now I know I am still okay… haha.

I think the way to gauge if you are using too little, is to see if the product has effect on you.

Otherwise, you might want to try increasing your usage amount.

  28. pf1123 says:

Jyoan, maybe I’m not a fussy person. If my face is free of pimples and clogged pores, I’m happy. I could be happier if my pores shrink somemore, but oh well… Right now, I’m happy to be just happy. ?

I noticed if I do mask more than twice a week or have too much stuff on my face until my face feels oily, I will have little red bumps coming up.

So, I suppose the amount I use on my face is alright. Its just that I feel that its kinda wasteful for me to bin the last bit of product. Although I think I should, to be safe. So, I try to tell myself, since it lasted for so many months, its ok.

  29. sesame says:

Yup, I share your frustration too with those types of containers…

  30. sesame says:

If your beautician hasn’t been saying your face is dry or highlighting any significant problems, I think what you use should be sufficient. Most of the time, they should be able to tell and point out.

  31. pf1123 says:

They keep saying that my cheeks are dry. Then they want to introduce more facial packages to me!

  32. toh88 says:

oh my! u really did that! (cut open) I didnt think of that at all. all I did was – using all my strength and effort to aqueeze all I can! stupid me! how come I didnt think of that! all my years of strength have been wasted! argh!!!!

  33. sesame says:

Haha…sometimes make you wonder if what they say are all truth…

  34. sesame says:

Haha…I used to squeeze until I got fedup!

  35. toh88 says:

hahahaha……I did too! even till now until I read this article of yours!

actually I was thinking what if cut open then realised the remains is more than what need?? ? those def have to gone to waste! :”(

  36. sesame says:

It’s actually quite a bit from the tubes I’ve cut especially for thick creams…so cut it up next time but remember to store it well to prevent contamination. Can scoop in a small container if you like.

  37. denise says:

I do! Mostly with lotions I tilt the bottle upside down like you do. Here’s a neat trick I learned for lip glosses, the ones with the twist cap sponge tip applicators. If you dunk it in a glass of hot water, the remaining gloss that you can’t get will melt down to the bottom. Saves me about 1/3 -1/4 gloss!

  38. sesame says:

Oh that’s a great tip! Thanks for sharing. I’ve never done anything for lip glosses though…cos I’ve never finished one yet! Haha…

  39. rosie kerr says:

what about perfume and not getting the last drops out?

  40. sesame says:

It’ll be easy if you can open up the bottle, otherwise, it’ll be wasted.

  41. Cheryl says:

I have just the thing for all if you, the Spatty and Spatty Daddy. They were featured on ABC’s Shark Tank. The Spatty and Spatty Daddy are specifically designed to get you the most of your makeup. You will love them. Go to http://www.thespatty.com and check them out.

  42. Marie says:

I just found a new product online called Save the Last Drop and I love it.
I use it for my pump lotion and tiny serum bottles. It just lets gravity pull out the last of your liquid. I knew there was product in the bottom that I couldn’t get to but I didn’t realize how much until now.
