Naturopatch Essential Oil Patches for PMS relief

Naturopatch Rose Geranium Essential Oil Patches

I was so excited when my order of the Naturopatch Rose Geranium Essential Oil Patches finally arrived last week from a LuckyVitamin spree.  It so happened that these came during the onset of my PMS so it was really timely!  The purple tin box is so pretty and once opened, I could smell the rose geranium.   Of course I couldn’t wait to use the first patch right away!

Need to figure out the actual placement of the patch
But I was good and waited till I took a bath so that I can use this on clean, dry skin as instructed.  I followed the recommended placement of the patch and stuck it on the front side of my shoulder.   However, after a long time, I still could not smell anything!  This therapy is supposed to work via aromatherapy, which means, I should be smelling the rose geranium.   I was wondering that perhaps I didn’t use it correctly or that I shouldn’t be smelling anything!  Anyway, you can imagine how disappointed I was but nonetheless, I pressed on and used it on the subsequent days.  I placed the patch lower down my shoulder but I could only smell a little of the rose geranium at some intervals.

Placement should be nearer to the breast
I almost gave up on the product until I read up further on the website.  Well, I really should have gone to the site earlier or I needn’t have wasted four patches to realize that I should have placed the patch much lower, nearer to my breast, so that I can inhale the essential oil!  (Yes, I’m quite a dim wit.)  And so finally, I could smell the rose geranium on the 5th try!

Naturopatch Essential Oil Patches

Benefits from inhalation and skin contact
How the Naturopatch Essential Oil Patch Therapy works is via aromatherapy.  According to the FAQ on the website, “Inhalation combined with skin contact is the quickest way for essential oils to enter the body.  As we breathe in, moist, warm air carries tiny molecules of essential oils through the nasal passages and, via the olfactory system, to the brain, immediately enhancing mood and optimizing a feeling of health and well-being.”

Clever idea but not so effective delivery
The invention is very ingenious I have to say, especially since it allows you to enjoy the benefits while on the move.  However, I think using a burner or diffuser is more effective as I can enjoy a stronger scent.  In addition, the scent on the patch is rather mild, and if I were to wear it under my clothes, I don’t think I can enjoy tha aromatherapy benefits.  So while it’s a clever idea but the delivery via inhalation isn’t as effective as desired.  As for skin contact, it’s definitely good there but I have no idea how that works for me because I prefer to smell the rose geranium essential oil to enhance my mood.

Naturopatch instructions

Easy to use and non messy
The Naturopatch Essential Oil Patches are easy to use though.  Just remove the clear backing, stick on and that’s it.  It’s also easy to remove and doesn’t leave a mess.  However, there was at least once that I developed some redness after using the patch for a few hours so those with sensitive skin might need to be more careful. Each patch is effective for up to 24 hours but in effect, the longest I wore was about 12 hours as I always remove it when I want to take a shower.  So the cost per usage is not that low, considering the tin of 10 patches cost me US$9.40 from LuckyVitamin.

Might repurchase if cheap refills are available
The Naturopatch Aromatherapy Body Patch comes in a variety of essential oils to serve different purposes.  You can find details on their website.  The rose geranium essential oil body patch is designed to relieve discomforts associated with PMS and menopause.  Although I rather like the patches, now that I know where to place it right, but I think I’m better off using the actual rose geranium essential oil to relieve my PMS.  The patches aren’t exactly cheap and they’re not as effective in terms of inhalation when worn under my clothes.  But I may still get them if I can find the refills at a lower price because they’re obviously more convenient than using a diffuser.

Oh, I have no idea if using these alone can really help to provide relief for my PMS because the relief is already provided by the evening primrose oil I’m taking.  I was hoping this would complement the evening primrose oil and eliminate my PMS completely because I do feel very good smelling rose geranium.

this looks really interesting.. i know how some people wear a pendant with essential oil in it to help relieve stress or improve health. i figure we can hold the pendant close to our nose and sniff as and when we like, but how low can we go to smell the patch? LOL. maybe they should invent a pendant like tht too to relieve PMS

  2. Jyoan says:

Interesting. I have never seen anything like that before.

  3. sesame says:

Ah…pendant might be good as like you said, you can lift it up to smell. But the designs have to be nice though…

  4. sesame says:

I don’t think any stores have brought this in as yet. Haven’t seen it around. I stumbled upon it when I was checking on rose geranium for PMS relief.

  5. pf1123 says:

I think they shld make it into a balm. Like badger balms. Then u can apply to the temples, under the nose, etc.

  6. Miss Vinny says:

Cool, that is an interesting concept. ? Then again, I’m quite sure that perhaps the product isn’t that suitable for our climate? Perhaps the scent evaporates faster due to the humidity? After all, our weather is so chaotic. Anyways, perhaps, just applying the essential oils to your skin might be more effective?

Btw, if there is anyone who wants to buy my Renew package rosehip oil(unopened) + Renew balancing gel(opened about 20++ days ago), email me at yuri dot aoki at gmail dot com if you live around or travel near the West(Buona Vista area). I’m willing to let it go for 20++.

I kinda forgot about them and want to sell them off ASAP ‘cos the gel doesn’t suit my sensitive skin(sting too much) and ‘cos of the limited shelf life. As for the oil, I read your review(s) and decided not to tempt fate. Btw, this message is allowed, right?

  7. sesame says:

Ya, that’s probably a good idea.

  8. sesame says:

I didn’t give our weather a thought about this…but you could have a point about it. Essential oils tend to diffuse better in aircon room.

It’s okay for you to post the message – it’s not a commercial one but just about your own items – no problem!

But I’m surprised the Renew gel stings your skin…I’ve only tried their rosehip oil. Not too keen on the rest cos one of the suppliers told me their products are so-so.

  9. Miss Vinny says:

Well, yeah… unfortunately, it stings my skin which gets irritated easily and so on. Skin Blossom’s products have worked quite well in aiding my skin recovery so don’t want to undo that.

And oh, slight mistake: the gel was opened 2 weeks ago, not 3. Oops! ?

Their oil is not so good, huh? Well… maybe it’s okay for those with non-sensitive skin ‘cos I know using oil that’s too concentrated is really bad for some. But I don’t think I want to try diluting oils myself, lol!

Okay, thanks a lot for allowing me to post the message. ?

As for the essential oils diffusing better in airconditioned room, I didn’t know that. ? Guess it makes sense since there’s less heat and humidity?

  10. sesame says:

The Renew rosehip oil is not bad but it may not suit every skin type though…the supplier was referring to their creams and lotions which I asked about.

  11. Rachel says:

First off, let me say that this is completely off topic. But this post is very informative as always!

I’m in need of help with a dissertation paper that I’m currently working on. I’m tasked to produce a research paper on any issues that are related to the field of Marketing. I’m very interested in conducting a research on the increasing trend of online beauty gurus (opinion leaders) and people like me (opinion seekers). The problem I’m facing at the moment is that, I don’t know exactly what issue that I should be looking into. I do not want to bite more than I can chew but at the same time, I don’t want to tackle something that is too easy and not challenging.

If possible, please suggest some research topics that may be of personal interest; or something that you are curious about, that I might consider. Or a topic that you feel is important and should be addressed in academia. I am open to any suggestions. Of course, Viva women readers are welcomed to chip in as well. Any input is helpful!

  12. sesame says:

Hi Rachel: Off hand, I can’t think of anything at the moment (in a rush too). Will take sometime to give some thoughts and drop you an email when I can think of something. Hope you can get inputs from others too.

  13. Miss Vinny says:

Oh, I see. Your skin is oily and sensitive, right? Wait… supplier of the Renew brand?! *blinks*

  14. sesame says:

My skin is very funny now – it’s supposed to be combi but it’s also dry and yes, now also sensitive. Oh, the supplier is the owner of a store in Chinatown (Kim Leng Store) that I used to buy some of my organic stuff. But I haven’t visited him for a long time now… He’s a funny man and asked me not to buy Burt’s Bees when he’s selling it!

  15. zzzmadison says:

i suppose if we’re using perfume, the patch wun work?

i like the pendant idea haha.

  16. Faye says:

Oooh I think its a very good idea, but at that time of the month I am NASTY and I am not sure if there is anything strong enough to help my horrid mood swings!

  17. sesame says:

It has to be used over clean, dry skin. The smell of the perfume will also interfere with the essential oil.

  18. sesame says:

It’s a bit mild though…if you want strong scent, try rose geranium with a diffuser.

  19. Rachel says:

Thank you, Sesame! I’m looking forward to your ideas! ?

The best and most effective way to use essential oils to treat pms is to combine the pure oils together, add to a base oil (from a nut or seed, i.e. almond oil) and apply to lower abdomen 1-2x a day for a week or two BEFORE the onset of pms. The oils build up in the system and curb those nasty moodswings, an added way to get relief, let’s say if pms has already begun, would be to place some of the undiluted blend onto a cotton swab and inhale for about 3 minutes. Oils take some time to permeate the skin, and in the case of the hormonal imbalance which cause pms, they take some to to adjust in the body. The wonderful part of this is, once you’ve done this, it will work for the next 1-2 menstruations, even if you do not reapply. The best would be for the first time, use it once a day for the week prior to pms – so two weeks before menstruation – then the following months, just 1x a day for just 2 or 3 days will suffice and keep you balanced. Inhalation is the fastest way to feel instant relief, but it’s best to give time to really get to the root and remove the symptoms completely. I’ve done this myself and shared the blend with others and they have had the same great results. This patch is missing the mark just a little bit.
