Do you color your own hair?

Thursday, 21 January 2010

I received two packs of Hoyu DIY hair color kits over Christmas but they’re still in the original gift bag as I have no guts to try them out. The instructions seem easy enough but I am so afraid of doing something irreversibly wrong. So while I need to color my hair soon and do not have the time to go to the professionals, I dare not go DIY.

Actually, I used to watch my mom coloring her hair at home and it all seem so breezy. However, I also remember my friend’s horror story of having her hair turned green after a session of self-administered hair color!

So do you color your own hair? Or do you prefer to go to the professionals? And if you color your own hair, how was your experience like? Was it relatively easy and were you happy with the outcome?

I can never color my own hair. Too messy and I am always afraid that I’ll somehow miss a spot of my hair.

I have dyed other people’s hairs before. The results are satisfactory.

I used to do it professionally but don’t like to sit there and do nothing, heck I can’t even listen to my mp3!

I love Beauteen, it doesn’t smell and the color results are nice.

I color my own hair! I’ve done it a couple of times and I’m loving the result. I like it when the color turned out to be really natural and looks like “highlights” :)

Your hair is nice! Wow, didn’t know you colored them yourself.

My mom colors her own hair ever since I was young :)

There are lots of tutorials on YouTube for hair coloring withlots of tips so you can try it by yourself! But you will probably need a lot of free time, and go slowly so that you do not mess up :)

If you are afraid that the hair color product you received is not good quality, you can test a small lock of hair in the back first to see what color it becomes! That way, you will not end up with your whole head in a color you do not like!

Sounds kind of tedious to me…but your suggestion about testing a small lock is good!

Last time I used to go to saloon as the DYI hair dye as it was so difficult to do it myself ( comb-type)

but after the Liese bubble hair dye came around, I started to dye myself . It was so easy and the effect is really good

Liese bubble hair dye is good? I saw the ad and it seems easy. But seem to have read some negative comments on the product. Maybe it just don’t work well for some…

I have seen unfortunate results for others. Some ladies have a different hair color every month.

I have never dyed my hair, as it’s a path I decided I would not walk down. My hair is mostly black, but the crown is white. Even men ask me about it. I earned my white hair!

BTW, it falls to below my shoulders!

I admire you for holding steadfast to your original hair color. Actually, I kind of wish I didn’t get started coloring my hair. My grays are dispersed and all over…not so obvious but they’re there.

Speaking of unfortunate results, I saw a lady with green hair today! And I don’t think it’s deliberate.

I don’t colour my own hair because I don’t like to colour. But it’s actually pretty safe. And the colour does goes on well. My bf always does DIY hair colour. So far so good!

I’ve been coloring my own hair since college days (too poor to have it done professionally back then). Nowadays I don’t have time nor the patience to sit at the salons.
Hair colors nowadays aren’t very messy. As long as you choose a color a few shades close to your natural color, there shouldn’t be any drama.

Oh no…that’s bad. No wonder you’re turned off. I guess perhaps long hair is also quite tricky to color, and would take a long time.

I’ve never colored my own hair but I color other people’s hair. My hair’s black, so it’ll take bottles and bottles for a color to barely show up, lol. I think unless someone has short hair, dying your own hair would be a pain – and messy, haha.

    sesame Reply:

I think your black hair is nice and there’s no need to color if you don’t want to. Mine is short and highlights would give it some dimension. Plus, I have grays.

i do! i color mine and my mom’s! i’m doing it to either lighten or darken my original hair color by about 2-3 shades. but i don’t gray hair yet. i might need assistance if i already do. professional hair coloring doesn’t fit my budget!

It’s pretty costly isn’t it. Mine is short and I feel the pinch. Imagine for those with longer hair!

I have not tried to colour my own hair. I do it perhaps like once a year or more. I like to let the colour grow out and cut away before I do a new one.

Anyway, there is more white hair now. Perhaps I should start thinking about it. I think I would DIY if I need to do it regularly. Cost issue.

    sesame Reply:

But I’m also worried that if done improperly, DIY can make the hair frizzy. So still no guts to try and went to a neighbourhood salon to color instead. Cheaper than my usual salon and results as good.

Oh yes…recently I did rebonding and colouring plus treatment at Kimage at Plaza Sing. The colour and highlight alone is about $200 done by master hairstylist. Almost fainted.

I’m not at a point in my life where I need to dye my hair, but I have seen my mom do it.
It looks so messy, but seems to work well if you keep it protected. One of my friends mom does her own coloring and I’ve watched her do it with great results.

I colour my hair all the time except for one time, I went to the salon. Bloody costly!!!
I even colour for my hubby few times but now he knows how to colour himself!
It won’t be too messy if you stay “confine” to one place i.e. your bathroom. I usually pin my hair with a big clip(s)or hair cap to make the hair stay.
It only takes 25 – 30 minutes for the colour to develop, more than that not recommended.

I have never gone to the salon to dye my hair before. have DIY-ed twice and both times the color turned out different from that indicated on the boxes. decided to stick with natural black hair ever since. haha!

    [Reply]

    sesame Reply:

Oh it wasn’t the same? I don’t know…just worried the hair color would turn out wrong and also the hair might become brittle or something. Anyway I prefer highlighting to give the hair some interesting dimension.

I bought 2 boxes of Hoya around christmas time last year too! and its still unused. I dare not DIY!! I really worry that it will turn out ugly. Let me know if u have tried it ;)

Er no…I went to a neighbourhood salon for highlight instead. No guts to try.

  18. cemolina Says:

haha you have to at least try it once then you know wether or not you like it. I’ve done it myself and people comment on the colour saying its nice n they did not believe i did it myself (i did it a rich chocolate shade and in summer it faded into a brown with caramel highlights!). The brand i used was herbal tints i think, which is organic. Last time I dyed it light brown (l’oreal) and went to the hair dressers later on to get lowlights and highlights. =)

    aww haha

It probably better not to go if your worried…sometimes a possible bad hair reaction can really wreck your day and deflate your confidence. Hairdressers are trained so you do not have worry as much!
