How much do you care about your man’s skin?
Monday, 1 February 2010
In a recent conversation with someone in the beauty industry, we spoke about skin care for men. She was lamenting that the sales of products for men are slow and the topic inevitably moved to why men don’t seem to bother about caring for their own skin. Actually, I think there’s an increase in the number of men wanting to care for their skin but unlike ladies, they probably prefer products that are all-in-one or at least convenient to use.
Anyhow, I’m not going into the statistics of men using cosmetics and the reasons why they’re still not into cosmetics. Rather, I’m keen to find out if you try to influence the man in your life to take care of their own skin and to what extent do you do so. The man in your life need not be just your boyfriend or husband; he can also be your father, brother or perhaps a really good friend.
My say
Personally, I only insist that my husband apply sunscreen when he exercises under the hot sun. That’s about the only thing I’m really into. Other than that, I sometimes offer him my share of facial scrubs and body lotion. However, I do not insist that he uses them. But my husband is quite “vain” and would buy his own facial wash and moisturizer although I think he hardly uses the latter. He also loves to go for facials!
Okay, secretly between you and me (he hardly reads this blog), I’ll tell you why I don’t insist on him having a proper skin care regime. Well, the reason is because I don’t want him to look too good! I don’t deny there’s a bit of insecurity there but if you were me, you probably would feel a tad so with a partner younger than yourself. As it is, he’s quite fit looking and often get stares from men so I’ll rather be safe, than be sorry. In fact, in a facial session we went together, I even told the beauty therapist not to do too much work on his skin but rather, to focus on mine. *chuckles*
So what say you?

Due to my holistic beauty regimen, my SO always nagging me to do a mask for him every weekend. Although he has genetically good skin but recent years all aging signs have shown on him because of exessive unprotected sun exposure. Now he was using a SPF moisturizer and will buy another night cream for daily use. I advised him the simplest routine so he can keep up with. A “soap” man that from head to toe, now became a quite obedient kid to follow daily cleanser& moisturizer and weekly scrub & mask, I will say his skin looks much moisturized and “a little bit” younger for me. “b

You’re good. At least you’ll bother to help him keep up with his basic routine. I will only nag about the use of sunscreen.

I don’t have a bf (nor have I ever had one) but I think that as long as I look younger, I wouldn’t mind ^^;
I really prefer a guy who takes care of himself, because I think that if he can take care of himself, it shows that he pays attention to detail, and therefore can take care of me
While he doesn’t have to go for facials or anything, he should at least keep clean and make sure his skin is healthy like with moisturizer or sunscreen

Yup, keeping himself clean and neat is important and knowing how to protect his skin from the sun. I think the younger guys are probably more savvy with this but some of the older ones maybe lazy or less bothered.

I’m more concerned with his health than anything else. But even then he’s really bad at it!!

Yes, it’s the same. That’s why I insist he use sunscreen because I’m worried about the free radicals causing damage to the skin cells.

i think beauty therapists tend to think that men’s skin are more resilient than women’s when men are still young (like before they hit their late 20s to early 30s thats when their skin start to go downhill real quickly), so unless they have really big problems like severe acne, usually women’s skin are more problematic.
on the contrary, my bf is alright with having a simple 3 step regime to improve his skin on the general, but totally hates putting sunblock on a daily basis. still preaching to him and showing him articles on skin damage.

That’s funny subject. My husband is very open to try some new products even though he doesn’t really use anything himself, except shaving cream and deodorant. But he made it clear that he wouldn’t touch any make-up even at the threat of death. And then….let me put on him full face on make-up for Halloween…hehe

Haha…that’s a fun idea! I guess few men like makeup but I just heard from someone that the husband wanted her to apply a light foundation for him cos he was to have his picture taken.

Since I am so interested in skincare, I’ve been hoping that my BF would catch on a little bit. But I don’t think he would remember to do it. I told him about SS, but he doesn’t think he needs it except at the beach since he is inside a lot.
I don’t expect him to do a whole routine, but he has a bit of acne scarring, and is handsome so I want him to stay kinda groomed. xD
I often have to remind him to just wash his face with a mild acne cleanser! Oh well…

I think guys prefer stuff that are hassle free. Unless they’re into all these at the beginning, probably quite hard to get them using more stuff later. Well, going step by step is a good idea.

Oh wow! I just bought him the nivea oil control cleansing, toning and moisturizing set (though he vehemently rejects the moisturizer, he can’t understand why he still needs moisturizer despite my preaching). But he really is catching on to my skin care habits, and have admitted honestly “You’re right. I should take good care of myself from now on”!
And because I told him the bad effects of too much sun, he bought his own neutrogena sports sunblock when he’s out running or boxing. I also buy him men’s masks when I drop by at Watsons’!

Your guy’s good! He’s heeding your advice and he will have to thank you at the end of it all.

ive a bro who is quite vain too. but he only take care of areas that are problematic. for eg, his dark circles are serious, he will put eye mask, he has got pimples, he will borrow pimple cream from me. but at least he does use a facial cleanser daily. and i was rather shocked that he knew he had to choose a moisturising one over those oil control ones haha!

Haha…he has been reading magazines then. Not bad, he knows to go to his sis when he needs the stuff.

well, we as men usually find it is a very hassle to do facial routine.
except for facial pampering. because
someone else do the hardwork and you just go there to sleep. haha
so for me..
i just moisturize in the morning
*included SPF in the moisturize, dun even tone*
then at night.. Shower and cleanse
and then quick paper mask
then wash off and anti-aging lotion and moisturizing then sleep..
tada…
and i am a gay man…. that’s already too much work…
