Viva Challenge: Alternate breathing for beauty

A couple of years ago, I took yoga and was taught the Alternate Nostril Breathing, also known as Nadi Shuddhi Pranayama. It was relatively easy and I practiced it for awhile, but as usual, gave up subsequently due to laziness and distractions. Those who are learning yoga or have picked up yoga would know that breathing is essential as your nose is directly linked to your brain and nervous system and breathing right can help to oxygenate the cells of your body, from your brain to your vital organs.

Activate and access your whole brain
I understand that consciously alternating your breath between either nostril will allow you to activate and access your whole brain. So breathing in, only through your left nostril, will access the right side of your brain, and breathing in, only through your right nostril, will access the left. I also learnt that the left nostril is for calming and the right nostril is for energy.

Benefits of alternate nostril breathing
So a few rounds of alternate nostril breathing for a few minutes each day can help us restore any imbalances in our brain. In fact, this method can help you achieve a calmer emotional state, soothe your nervous system, boost your thinking power because of the improved oxygenation, increases rate of metabolism thus aiding weight loss – as highlighted in the above video. In addition, it can aid in curing ailments of the lungs (like asthma), expeling all the waste matter and toxid elements from the body and enhancing the beauty of the face.

    This sounds really good. I am very easily stressed out.. even by little things..and although I dont eat a lot i still havent lost my fat…maybe my cortisol levels are high. thanks for this!

    I’ve been using this alternate nostril breathing since I learnt in yoga some 10 years ago. It works very well in calming the mind, especially if you are agitated and cannot focus. Also, its health benefits are tremendous. It cools the body and mind down. It allows you to take in more air and oxygen into your lungs. And best of all you can do this any time, and it takes less than 5 mins. Doing it once or twice a day truly gets your body in good shape.

    I haven’t been doing this as consistently as I should but it’s true, I’ve expereienced the calming effects.
