10 different ways I use a facial mist spray

I have been hooked since I started using my first facial mist spray from Suisse Programme some years back. Since then, I find myself purchasing different brands of misting atomizers and using them on an almost daily basis. I started using the facial mist spray to set my makeup but later found it a great skin care aid and product mixer. Some people find that there is no difference between a toner and a facial mist and I discussed this at length in my entry on toner, toning mist or facial spray. However, even though I use a toner, these misting atomizers have become something I cannot do without on a daily basis.

1. Helps moisturizer seal in the hydration
I find that my skin looks a lot better when I bother to mist with a facial spray just before moisturizing with a cream or oil.  This is because moisturizing on a damp face helps to lock in the water on the upper layers of the epidermis and prevent evaporation.  Obviously the water contained in a facial mist spray is better than water from the faucet as they are either spring water, ocean water or simple purified water.   Some of you may ask why don’t I apply straight after applying my toner.  Well, it’s because I use an essence after my toner and they both dry up really quickly.  Currently, I’m using oil as a daily moisturizer and the facial mist makes application a lot easier and my skin doesn’t feel so oily as well.

2. Helps dilute my thick cream
If I’m using a thick cream, I might mist a little and mix in with the cream to dilute it. I know it sounds strange but haven’t you come across a cream you’ve purchased and it’s too thick? So instead of putting it away, diluting it means you can still use it. I do this for creams on my neck too cos I find that some face creams are too expensive and I want to stretch them a little so when I do apply on my neck, I mist a little with the facial spray to improve the viscosity and the spread. This means I don’t need so much cream for my neck!

3. Helps hydrate my skin
A facial mist spray helps improve the condition of my skin when it’s exceptionally dry. Initially, I only spray and left the mist to dry up but later I found out that when you mist your face, the water evaporates, which can dry your skin so it’s really better to pat my skin dry with a tissue paper after misting.  And it’s true that doing so makes my skin feels a lot more hydrated.  So this is really great on when used during air travel as airplane oxygen and air conditioning typically leave our skin more parched.

4. Helps act as a mini facial mask
Remember Chizu Saeki’s lotion mask? Facial mist sprays can be used in the same way. Spray some cotton pads generously and spread them on your cleansed face and you’ll find your skin more hydrated afterwards. I’ve tried this for fun and it works to make my skin more hydrated but I would say it’s kind of wasteful so I don’t do this often. But if you run out of lotion or toner, this is another possibility for the lotion mask.

5. Helps set my makeup
I used to mist my face a lot after applying makeup at one point.  I don’t do it now because I’m usually short on time.  But I did find that my makeup looked more dewy if I include this step of misting.

6. Helps as a mixer in my DIY concoction
I use mostly mineral water when I play with my DIY skin care concoctions.  However, when I run out of mineral or distill water, a facial mist spray can easily work as a substitute.  So I can really spray this into my baking soda for example and then mix the paste with some essential oil to use as a deodorant.

7. Helps to blend my makeup
I’ve tried using a facial mist spray to wet my sponge and apply my foundation wet. This is not something I do often but on and off when I find that my foundation isn’t applying well. I understand that you can also mist your eyeshadow brush a little to apply your eyeshadow so that they can stay longer or look more dramatic. However, I haven’t experimented with this before to say how it works.

8. Helps to reshape my hair
I usually have a facial mist spray somewhere in my bag not only to freshen up, but also to reshape my hair if needed.  Well, water from the tap can do the same thing but  find that mist do a better job because they’re not so wet when applied, and allows my hair to dry up much quicker without a hair dryer.

9.  Helps to soothe irritated skin
Okay, this is not so much for myself but my son, when his skin develops some redness or rashes due to the heat. Usually, it’ll help soothe and calm down the irritated skin because some of these facial mist contain anti-inflammatory properties.

10. Helps to refresh my mood after a long day
I don’t know about others but misting has a mood lifting effect for me. I find it great to spray a mist on my face if my day is long and the weather is very hot.

It’s possible to make your own facial mist spray but I prefer to purchase since it’s so convenient and I don’t have to think about spoilage, etc. The herbal mist are great as they do deliver some skin benefits but do note that whatever skin benefits are restricted to the upper layers of our skin. And did you know that some of these products were originally created as dermatological products to be used in hospitals and burn clinics? Due to the spring water used, they act as natural healer for burned, irritated and delicate skin.

I only use them when the weather is unbearable. Seems like a waste of money to buy this, IMO. I’ve tried ZA’s blemish spray which, psychologically I like to think it helps to soothe my skin whenever I have zit. ?

Anyway, these mist sprays are an amusement for Milo, he LOVES THEM VERY MUCHIE!!!

  2. Connie says:

I do all of the above but I’ve just recently started doing #1 and I’m very pleased with the results! My skin definitely looks more hydrated the next morning

  3. Erny says:

    Love this post.
I have Avene facial mist, and was so into spraying my face back then. Now, too bad, I don’t have the time to do so.
But I guess, I’ll make it a habit to start using facial mist, as I really agree with the last point u have there, after I mist, somehow I feel more refresh, and it makes my mood better. Weird, actually. Lol..

  4. Paris B says:

Reminds me to pick my facial mists back up ?

  5. Sherry says:

good tips I want to try out, hehe.. all day long I thought only one purpose ha.. now I know there is more

  6. Janayna says:

I have been using facial mists for quite a while and never though about some of the different ways you’ve mentioned. I am very dry and dehydrated now so I will definitely start using it before my moisturizer. Thanks for the tips!

  7. Vonvon says:

Very informative post. Point #9 – I used the Avene Thermal Water so generously when I had a skin reaction some time back that it helped to soothe and calm my skin. #10 – Yes, I get the same lifting feel esp with a scented mist. I use Avene Thermal water for my little girl, esp when we are out and the weather is so hot and her face would turn red…and now she would just ask me to mist her face every time she feels really warm.

    And agree with point #1.

  8. CT says:

I bought so many facial mists after reading your previous articles.

  9. pf1123 says:

I don’t know why….but my makeup with powder foundation gets streaky when I set with a facial mist. But its alright when I set with a mist for makeup setting from Skinfood.

I have these mists but don’t use much in the humid Sg. I do use them in place of my morning toner when I travel overseas.

  10. sesame says:

That’s great! I’m glad mist sprays are working for you.

  11. Mint says:

yes, i love Avene facial mist too. However, do you have recommendation for other facial mist? will like to try other brands too. =)

  12. sesame says:

Try to bring one along in your bag so that you can use it on the go and that’ll save you some time?

  13. sesame says:

It’s good to stock up…they run out fast too!

  14. sesame says:

Yes, it’s great for a number of purposes. I also thought it was just one purpose initially…

  15. sesame says:

It helps me when I feel my skin getting tight…mist on, pat with a tissue paper and immediately I feel better.

  16. sesame says:

My son is like your daughter…and he likes to play with my sprays!

  17. sesame says:

Haha…I hope they’re useful to you.

  18. sesame says:

Probably the Skinfood product has some additional ingredients in there that can help set your makeup better.

  19. sesame says:

Milo is like a kid! LOL.

  20. sesame says:

I tried Avene’s too…like it as much as Vichy. Actually, Evian to me is about the same as the two and I use it a lot. I haven’t tried all but my fave so far is from Suisse Programme. A bit costly but the effects seems better. Maybe it’s just in my head!

I also like floral water as mists but those I keep as a toner but they’re great as facial sprays too cos of the skin benefits they provide.

  21. AtelierGal says:

Is it just me or that the cartoon look like me? lol

  22. Raelynn says:

i agree with pf1123, it doesnt seem to help to set powder foundations, hence i just switched to liquid foundation which gave better results. but i do use it to dilute my moisturizer(using the 100%pure white tea toner is too expensive for daily diluting use), and i agree that using it before a moisturizer helps. but i thought we’re not allowed to bring aerosols up onto planes?

  23. Audris says:

Good idea on using the facial mist with a viscous moisturiser. Shall try that with mine tonight! I love the Avene thermal ones after washing my face and for spritzing in the office just to feel refreshed and hydrated.

  24. pf1123 says:

    Hello Raelynn,

you set your liquid foundation with the mist?

Now I get so lazy, I don’t set my makeup anymore (either with mist or with loose powder). hehehee….and I don’t notice any significant diff with setting the liquid foundation.

I just make sure my skin is adequately hydrated and moisturized before I put on my makeup and it adheres nicely…or just that I’m not picky. hehehe…

  25. sesame says:

Oh ya, now that you said it, it does look like the recent shot of you with your hair bun up!

  26. sesame says:

Yes, you maybe right about the evian or vichy type of atomizers. In that case, need to decant in smaller glass bottle like those I got from Yours Essentially in the past but can only work for floral water.

  27. sesame says:

But not encouraged if your cream has active ingredients like vit C as the water may dilute and render it useless.

  28. sesame says:

Hey, one of my friends just messaged me she brought it up without any problems and it was last year…cos I asked her to confirm. Hers was the Evian one.

  29. Amarise says:

My favorite facial spray is the scent of neroli aka orange blossom. I use that more as a toner. Whereas for makeup setting I use Jane Iredale’s Balance spray. I think it’s the Sodium PCA that’s responsible for setting makeup. I know there are other ingredients that do this such as glycerin, algae extract, and more commonly silicones. Still I like to use floral waters as toner mists before applying moisturizer.

  30. Mint says:

oh i brought my Avene mist to Rome last year too.. And I was happily spraying away on the long flight.. No stewardess stopped me.. Not sure about now though…

  31. peapot says:

    Hi sesame,

I’ve got a nasty reaction to Vitamin E oil recently. I have since stopped using it on my eyes. Do you know of any heavy duty eye cream for reducing wrinkles? As you see I use the oil on my eyes everyday, so I don’t understand why I have this reaction only now. I want to change but I need something for women in their 50s!

  32. sesame says:

The smell of neroli is quite strong isn’t it? I tried it as a toner and while I like the thought that it’s good for my skin, I couldn’t stand the smell much.

So the ingredients that set the makeup sort of seal them makeup in? I guess that’s why plain spring water won’t work so well then.

  33. sesame says:

I haven’t tried…but it seems they’re not so strict about these based on your experience. My friend seem to share the same cos she just brought it onboard without issues. Maybe it’s not an issue afterall.

  34. Audris says:

Thanks for the reminder, just checked the ingredients on my moisturiser, no Vit C, just the following :):
Organic Aloe Gel, Jojoba Oil, Renovage, Raspberry Oil, Passionfruit Oil, Water, Phospholipids, Ubiquinone, Sorbitol, Gluconoactone and Sodium Benzoate, sodium Carbomer, Sea Buckthorn Oil, Green Tea

  35. Raelynn says:

hello! as in, after using a liquid foundation and then using the flat top and kabuki brush to apply loose powder, i didnt need mists to set the makeup… some times my skin will look a little hydrated, but im not too picky abt that too. hahahaha.

  36. sesame says:

Then it’s perfectly fine to dilute a little with the mist. ?

  37. stephy says:

yup! i love thermal spray! i find vichy more refreshing while avene more soothing haha. the small bottle one are more portable but v ex in my opinion cos i use them up pretty fast.

have u tried shu uemura mist? in terms of soothing, is it comparable to thermal sprays like avene?

btw, i find sprays good for ‘oil dispersing’ when i don have my oil blotter with me ?

i spray thermal mist before apply sheet mask too! i find my skin absorb better after spraying hehe.

  38. Amarise says:

Neroli can come off as strong depending on the origin and extraction process. Still it’s naturally a strong uplifting scent for me which can serve as too strong for others. That’s beauty with facial mists is that they come is many scents. A new one I want to try is watermelon for the coming warmer months.

Yep, that’s the main purpose of makeup setting sprays at least good ones. They are like primer sprays for the face. It’s especially good for mineral makeup to help with the dry cakey look besides not letting it slide off your face midday due to sweating or oiliness.

  39. N. says:

So many usages and benefits from this!

  40. sesame says:

I haven’t tried Shu Uemura’s, Expensive! So I rely quite a bit on Evian since it’s the cheapest.

Hey, you raise an interesting point about oil dispersing cos that might be why some of the ladies say that the mist make their makeup streaky. I have the same streaky issue using mineral makeup but the mist seems to work on compact foundation for me.

  41. sesame says:

Stephy’s comments about the oil dispersing properties in mists is intersting. I suppose that’s why the common facial sprays don’t work so well to set the makeup. And I learnt something from you about the makeup setting sprays too. ?

  42. sesame says:

Hi Peapot: I’m sorry to learn that you have a reaction with vit E. Very strange.

I need to think about the eye cream and will run some searches. Come back to you soon.

  43. Chris says:

Wonderful posting! Love it when anyone gets extra mileage out of a single product.

  44. ANu says:

    Hey Sesame,

Amazing post…I am quite a beginner for skin care…30 years old…normal skin…some times a bit dry. I spray organic rose water (brought from my local organic store) on clean face, apply either grape seed oil or jojoba oil and then sunscreen. I follow the same routine in the night but skip the sunscreen. I dont use the toner becuase I feel it dries out my skin…though my toner doesnt have alcohol in it. I was wondering if you could suggest any other natural oils for skin moisturizing. Also is rose water wnough for good skin hydration……

  45. sesame says:

Rose water may hydrate but the effects are limited so it’s important to following with an oil or moisturizer.

Many oils are good for skin moisturizing but I’m not sure what can work for your skin. Since you use jojoba oil, I’m guessing you don’t mind it so much cos I find it a little greasy for me. You might want to check out evening primrose oil or sunflower oil. I’ve tried EPO and it’s great.

  46. ANu says:

thanks Sesame…I like Jojoba oil but I use very little as a little goes a long way. About the rosewater hydration, I do follow with some kind of oil moisturizer but I always wonder if that is enough or if I have to buy some kind of skin hydrating spray/mist.

  47. sesame says:

Nah, it’s not necessary. It’s not so much of the hydration but if they’re able to deliver some form of skin goodies. So if you like, you can consider other types of floral water. However, they’ll only benefit the top layers of you skin.

  48. sesame says:

    Hi Peapot:

I was at Sephora yesterday and asked what eye cream would be suitable for your case. I was recommened the Green Apple Nutrient Eye Cream from Juice Beauty. Was told this is good for lines and dark circles.

I use Organic Apoteke’s eye cream and like that but it can cause the area around the eyes to redden due to the ingredients working. It’s temporary but I know some pple may not like it.

If you like oil, then consider grapeseed oil or seabuckthorn oil. I’m wonder if there’s an issue with the vit E you used. Did you check the expiry date?

  49. arouet says:

brumisateur plein mais ne fonctionne plus.Bouché: que faire?

  50. Kitty says:

Refreshing sprays are fine to help blend, but they should NEVER be used to set your makeup. That is what setting sprays, like MAC Fix+, or finishing sprays are for. There is a HUGE difference. Enkoremakeup on Youtube has a really informative video on this; he goes into detail about the ingredients in each, and what each should and shouldn’t be used for. Maybe you should check it out ?

  51. sesame says:

Oh that’s interesting! I’ll have a look and check it out. Thanks for sharing! Definitely new info to me. ?

  52. Al says:

    Hello guys

    i bought Evian Smoothing care
written on it on the back cover j&j inc. 2006

    What does it mean?

  53. SweeHwa says:

Thanks to this post I have now found a use for the facial mist my aunt brought back from Taiwan which has been languishing in a closet. Spraying it on before applying my face lotion really makes my skin glow and feel much more hydrated. Thanks Sesame!

  54. Sesame says:

Glad the tip is helping you. ?
