Viva Challenge: educate a male about sunscreen

In my job, I deal with young people of both genders and it isn’t beauty or health related. However, recently, there were some suitable opportunities for me to incorporate a small lesson to all of them about the importance of using sunscreen. I ran a random poll with them and discovered to my horror, that about 90% of the males who are active in outdoor activities do not use a sunscreen at all. And the topmost reason they cited was that sunscreen is a girl’s product! How wrong is that! I had to correct their perception and to tell them that sunscreen should really be seen as a health product too because of the risk of skin cancer when we go under the sun unprotected.

I have stuck to using a specific range of products for more than half a year now. While I do like the products but recently, I’ve been toying with the idea of changing. In fact, I’ve already started to add some new products to my regime and am planning to transit further. So that prompted me to wonder: how long do people stay loyal to their skincare products, and what prompts them to change especially if their current products are working fine?

Are you allergic to your sunscreen?

A reader by the name of Esther sent me an email last week asking if it’s normal for her chemical sunscreen to sting her face upon application. My reply was that it’s abnormal and she could be allergic to her sunscreen. I forgot to ask Esther if she has sensitive skin as I understand that those with such skin type may not take too well to chemical sunscreens. For some of these people, the sting could be so bad that it makes their face red with a burning sensation. Apparently, some of these allergic reactions represent contact dermatitis.
