Do you like to use face sheet masks?

It’s quite odd that while facial sheet masks are huge in Asia, I hardly use them myself. In fact, I don’t like them too much and consider them a complete waste of time. When I say a waste of time, I don’t mean they’re not beneficial. But literally as in it is a waste of time to have to use them for at least 10 minutes or more.

That’s because most of these commercially available face sheet masks are always dripping wet and if I were to use one properly, I will always have to lie down and that’s too time consuming for me. In addition, I’ve yet to come across a face sheet mask that contains natural formulation. And as far as my experience has proven, their benefits are temporary; I would have to be more consistent with the usage to gain any longer term benefits. However, most of them contain some form of alcohol, fragrance and preservatives; so that’s a deterrence to me. For now, the only sheet mask I use is the DIY type using a facial lotion. But even that is quite infrequent.

So do you like to use face sheet masks? How often do you use one and which is your current favorite?

i use these at least 4-5x a week, they really make a difference in keeping my skin hydrated. i don’t consider them a ‘waste of time’ since i usually put on one right after showering and head out to watch tv, take it off after 15mins and go right into my night facial routine; i like those by the face shop as they don’t drip all over and the texture of the mask sheet is lovely; however i only get them online since they are substantially cheaper. i’ve also used some taiwanese ones which were nice but too wet for me–altho’ i can still sit upright and watch tv. sheet masks comes after sliced bread for me!

I used to buy those sheet mask comprised into a tablet form from Muji & pour toner over it to use as a face mask. However, I am getting really lazy nowadays. As for other type of sheet mask, e.g. “My Beauty Diary” mask from Taiwan, they tend to irritate my skin.

  3. pf1123 says:

I use mask sheets. I don’t exactly love them. Its just a form of treatment for me. I also use other forms of masks treatment depending on what my skin needs.

I like to use Silk Whitia mask sheets because the serum is thick and doesn’t drip much.

  4. youngorgeous says:

just recently i’ve gotten into the taiwanese mask craze. some fits nicely on the face and some are just too big!

somehow it does help to make my skin feels soft but no major differences at the moment.

no doubt its messy and ‘drippy’, but its a good ‘me time’ for a good 20minutes or so!

  5. AtelierGal says:

I use them every 2-3 days, although I’ve been too busy lately and keep forgetting to do so. The ones I’ve tried are good and I count on them to be my “last-min” saviors – hydrating and calms down my skin. Toners don’t quite give me the same effect.

They aren’t a waste of time; I just slap one on and do about my daily stuff. 10-15mins pass by very quickly, you know? ?

I actually commented on your previous entry, but I think it disappeared so I didn’t bother to comment again lol

  6. Cindy says:

You don’t really have to worry about the dripping wet mask, cause normally I will try to squeeze the extra essence in the packet itself and then put on the mask first. After that the remaining essence i will pour it slowly onto the mask that is on my face already. Best is that you can concentrate on the places that you want it to have more essence and then you can use the remaining to apply it to your legs/hands/face (:

  7. CT says:

I am a huge fan of sheet mask. Its so easy to use it. Just have to lie down and put the mask over, dont even have to wash off. Pat the remaining serum/lotion into my face. The excess can be used for other parts of my body. But I read that sheet masks will drag down my skin. Not sure how true is that.

  8. Cyn says:

Hehe…I love face shop sheet mask. Maybe I’m lazy coz they are so convenient. Just put and pat it in after 15 mins. No need to wash off. Those that are dripping wet, I will apply on my legs and hands ?

  9. sesame says:

Wow, you’re very disciplined! I’m sure your skin is thankful to you for that. I agree that using masks consistently is very helpful…I wish I’m more motivated. I’m able to walk around or sit with those that are spread on but not the sheet mask type. But again, I’ve not used enough to explore which are more user friendly.

  10. sesame says:

I avoid those sheet mask because they contain potential irritants. I use the Muji ones and use it with the Hada Labo…but like you, a bit lazy.

  11. sesame says:

I think maybe I got on the wrong footing with them as those I used in the early days were from La Colline and SKII. They were thick and messy.

  12. sesame says:

Some dermatologists have suggested that such masks are useless but I think their benefits are evident only over time. But again, it depends on the quality. Those that contain superior ingredients probably give you better results.

  13. sesame says:

Last minute savior – that’s so true. It’s great for a perk-me-up. But I rely more on the spread on masks than sheet mask. They come across messier for me…or maybe it’s just a personal preference.

Your last comment must have appeared in the spam box. So sorry about that!

  14. sesame says:

Yeah, you can use the essence like a serum. But the mask is good to seal in the benefits…. I guess I need to use more to get the hang of it. For the moment, it’s still the spread on type for me.

  15. sesame says:

Hmm…interesting. Maybe it’s really better to use a sheet mask lying down if that’s true.

  16. sesame says:

    I like their eye masks!

  17. pf1123 says:

I see. Perhaps you want to check out Silk Whitia? Their ingredients list are pretty simple and short. So far, none has irritated my skin. But then they are also not a must have….

  18. pf1123 says:

Oh, I never lie down when I am using them. I’m just watching tv or surfing on my lappy. hehehe…

  19. sesame says:

I’ve seen that around…will take a look again. But I think it’s the mindset; I still prefer gel type or cream type of mask.

  20. hazelnut says:

hey im completely opposite as you.. i love sheet masks and they are the main masks i use… its so much easier to me… and the masks dont actually drip alot of water, so u don’t have to lie down, I can watch tv, iron my clothes with it.. but if u are afraid, can sleep with it loh… i do that sometimes, jus sleep with my mask… hahaha

  21. sesame says:

I guess I need to try more sheet masks. Those that I have used in the past made it impossible for me to move around and so it was too time consuming. I definitely haven’t tried sleeping with a sheet mask. The ones I have tried sleeping in are the gel mask.

  22. heather says:

i like to use sheet mask because i’m a lazy person ? i tried the kracie whitening masks before on the picture. I thought it was pretty good and cheap too!

  23. sesame says:

It was good? I was rather intrigued with the black one.

  24. Vonvon says:

Yes, I do. although the effect is temporary, it’s convenient and quick way to give the skin some tender loving care and pampering. I use the times when I put on sheet mask to lie down and relax. ?

I have a whole range of My Beauty Diary, Neutrogena, Laneige, some from Watsons and Sasa. I try to use at least once a week, but more if I can spare the time.

  25. Rinka says:

i use a sheet mask once a week as an energy boost to my skin before i face the week. japan has excellent range of face masks and theres so many to choose from so it becomes really fun to try out all the different ones. the ones that are super popular and always sold out here are the bihada-ichizoku masks (with the pretty drawings of girls on the packet) and high-end whitening ones from lancome, estee lauder etc

i much prefer sheet masks over cream/wash-off masks because you can do them while on the computer or watching tv or something haha

  26. Vonvon says:

I also sleep in my sheet mask too, sometimes. Especially when I am so tired and sleepy, so slap it on, and snooze till morning! ?

  27. hana says:

i love sheet masks too! i cart alot of my beauty diary masks from hongkong when i went there for holiday as they are substantially cheaper there. i usually slap it on after shower and before bed, hence skipping the ‘moisturizing’ step of my night routine. ?

  28. Jyoan says:

I think they do have effect for the following day. haha.

  29. sesame says:

I saw! Maybe I need to revisit face sheet masks again after reading all your comments.

  30. sesame says:

I’m sure it’s a rage in Japan. Actually, most of my masks here are from Japan and Korea. It’s really odd that I can’t sit up with a face sheet mask. Those that I use are pretty slimy…

I don’t like those wash off masks too with the exception of those clay type where I can wash quickly in the shower. I prefer those that you either tissue off or they get fully absorbed overnight. But all in all, I cannot count myself as a person who use mask frequently. I may experiment but I’m not consistent in application of them.

  31. sesame says:

I see…I suppose it doubles up as a treatment and moisturizer since many of them do have moisturizing properties.

  32. sesame says:

I believe so…for some, the effects are quite instant but temporary so that’s why some ladies like to use them frequently. I guess it can also become an addiction? Haha…

  33. Ana says:

I love sheet masks! My favourite is the Cherry Blossom from My Beauty Diary. It makes my skin bright and hydrated.

  34. Marka says:

So I’m reading this article and I’m a tad confused. I like using DIY masks experimenting with ingredients. When I go to these sites, they are meant to whiten your face. I’m already very pale, does this mean it will even out your complexion? Can anyone recommend a good product available to me in Canada.. In watch these asain dramas and always wanted to try one of these masks – haha!

  35. sesame says:

There are so many variety from My Beauty Diary…and I’ve heard quite a bit of raves.

  36. sesame says:

If it’s brightening, it should help to even out but it can also make your skin a shade lighter. Not sure what’s available in Canada. I guess you still have to get them online.

  37. jeanette says:

I went through a sheet mask craze and bought so many that now I have too many which I don’t think I’ll be finishing them soon. I’m wondering if the benefit is skin deep cause most people seem to say the effects are only temporary and on the surface? ?

I still use them once or twice a week and I get them all of them from faceshop. It doesn’t drip cause I just smear the excess over my neck when I put it on (mustn’t forget your neck). Usually wear it to wind down and surf the net or go to sleep.

    ps love your website

  38. sesame says:

According to my understanding, the benefits are temporary especially if you use them once in a while. It’s good for a perk-me-up. But if you use them frequently like some ladies here who use them 3 to 4 times a week, the effects maybe more telling. I doubt the ingredients are able to penetrate deeply but they can certainly help your outer skin layer.

I’m glad you like my blog. Come back often! ?

  39. jeanette says:

I started my skin care regime bout 8 months back (ie the wash tone mositurise) and then went to buy loadssss of sheet masks. D: I found your website bout that time too but didn’t come back to it till recently and spent last night reading many of the articles haha.

I went out this evening and somehow bought a deep cleansing mask, it’s mud from the dead sea. Tad expensive and wondering if I should have done more research first. she was a good sales woman. >_> But just to let you know, it was at esplanade exchange (the new exchange between esplande and city hall) and they are having a promotion because they a newly opened, 50% off the dead sea salt and discounts over other products. Not sure if people will be interested in that?

I’m now thinking of going into total, and I mean total body care. So that’s skin – every inch of your body! – hair, teeth, nails.

Thanks for reading my ramble, and yes I will visit again soon!

  40. sesame says:

There are a couple of mobile carts selling dead sea products. I tend to steer clear of them as they seem to over promise.

  41. Crystal says:

Very hard to get here… in the states you have to go to the Asian markets and they hike up the prices.

  42. sesame says:

Ah I see…I suppose it might be cheaper to get them online or from ebay?

  43. Isabella says:

I have to say I love sheet masks and I do have many. Well I think sheet masks are convenient and give better results than other types of mask. Guess what actually I like that I have to lie down while using them, because a mask treatment is meant to be relaxing! I like to listen to some calming music at the same time. Even some sheet masks of mine aren’t really drippy I still use them while lying down:)

  44. Vonvon says:

Aww…thanks. Do give them ‘a chance’ ? and let me know what you have tried and how they worked.

  45. sesame says:

That’s a nice treat. I should learn to do that!

  46. Aca says:

I have combination-dry skin. For the last 4 months, I’m using loads of different My Beauty Diary masks, depending on my skin condition and mood. hee. if i feel stressed up, I’ll use lavender.. if I feel that that day I was in the sun for too long, I’ll use Pearl or some other with whitening effect (and moisturizing effect of course) And recently I bought the Platinum series one.. its really good! The masks quality were as good as those $60/piece type. I can really see my skin literally brighten when I woke up next day.. although the effects will only sustain for as long as theres regular usage. For me, I’ll be sticking to MBD as I’ve used others from Watson and Beauty Spring before which are more costly and react badly to my skin (esp from Beauty Spring! They cause red big itchy and hot patches right after putting them on.. argh. never go there again).I found those apply on types too troublesome for me as I gotta wash up thoroughly .. else I don’t feel right :/

    Btw, love your blog!

  47. Jasmine says:

I’m really very fond of masks but you’re absolutely right on the preservatives, fragrances and cheap petroleum-derived moisturizing ingredients. Look harder! Japanese masks are most concerned about such messy ingredients. My favourite so far is a Kanebo soymilk mask (on my blog, sorry it’s a new one, not much written there yet!) with no additives and preservatives or alcohols…

I find that they really boost the moisture level of my skin — I can’t rub moisturizers to cure my skin alone, I need a wet and moist mask to replenish that. Thanks for this post!

  48. sesame says:

Wow $60 per piece…I can never spend on a mask like that. But you’re right…sheet masks are much more convenient.

I’m glad you like my blog…come back often! ?

  49. sesame says:

Oh Kanebo soymilk mask without additives, preservatives or alcohol? Sounds interesting! I’ll check it out. Thanks for telling me! ?

  50. lala says:

I like sheet masks; haven’t found any other alternative that gives the same (temporary) effect.

what i don’t like is the price, when i am able to count price per use, it seems like more than a tub of mask will cost..

haven’t tried DIY lotion mask though, will try that soon!

  51. sesame says:

Yeah, actually the sheet mask are quite expensive. I’m leery about those cheap ones cos they seem to contain some skin irritants.

  52. karei says:

Cheery Blossom from My Beauty Diary is one of my favourite too.
Sesame, u can try some of their new product…its fits better to your face…

  53. sesame says:

No, haven’t tried. Like I said, I don’t usually like sheet masks. I do use the DIY using face mist though.
