Marie Veronique Organics Kid Safe Screen

So I mentioned in my last post that I’ve been trying out Marie Veronique Organics Kid Safe Screen. It’s a new product and I have just received the 80ml bottle complimentary from the company. I had intended for it to be used on my boy but I find myself liking this on my own skin too.

Broad spectrum protection with SPF25
The Marie Veronique Organics Kid Safe Screen has an SPF of 25 and uses 19% non-micronized, non-nano zinc oxide, which means it provides sufficient broad spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays and is safe. The name suggests that this is a product for children but it’s also positioned for the whole family. Unlike the adult version which is Moisturizing Face Screen Plus, Kid Safe Screen is made with 15 ingredients including green and white tea, fractionated coconut oil, sunflower oil, avocado oil, MVO butter, vegetable glycerin, potassium sorbate, xantham gum, allantoin, Cosmocil CQ, glycine soja lecithin, rosemary oleoresin, ylang ylang essential oil, and iron oxides.

Packaging and smell
MVO Kid Safe Screen comes in an 80ml aluminum bottle with a white pump dispenser. It’s easy to use and there’s no mess; one pump is sufficient for a small face although you most probably want to apply more if you were to be out under the hot sun for a prolonged period. It’s not marked as water resistant but I believe you should be reapplying every two hours if you’re using this for outdoor purposes. The product has a scent; I can’t describe it well but it is very faint and is not fruity, floral or herbal. I wonder if it’s due to the xantham gum as I remember a product with that ingredient smelling the same.

Texture and application
The texture of Kid Safe Screen is thick and creamy. However, it is not greasy at all. In fact, when I apply this on my boy’s face, it blends in well, does not leave a white cast and is matt to the touch. On my combination skin type, it is drying on its own but blends well when I apply it over my facial oil. Again, I do not see a whitecast. But do note that both my boy and I have fair skin tone.

Kid Safe vs Face Screen Plus
As you can see from the picture, the MVO Kid Safe Screen looks thick; it does take a longer time to blend in, but once it is blended in, you can hardly see anything. On the other hand, the MVO Moisturizing Face Screen Plus is more lotion like and spreads thinly. Yet, after blending in, you can still see a very faint whitecast although this whitecast is almost non-existent on my fairer face.

Sunscreen for mom and child
I still like Marie Veronique Organics Moisturizing Face Screen Plus (click to read my review) as it works very well for my combination skin type and I have no intention of switching. However, I concede that the 60ml bottle is quite costly at US$40 and that’s not including shipping to Singapore. So for those who do not mind the lesser number of ingredients and the slightly lower SPF level, the 80ml Marie Veronique Kid Safe Screen at US$24 seems like a more affordable alternative especially if you have a kid, and you want to share this with him or her. Okay, you can of course also share this with your partner but if he’s got big mass like mine, then you’ll most probably have to replenish very quickly.

Am still considering getting the sunscreen from Marie Veronique shipped to Singapore. Wish they’d hurry up their shipping option here ? I checked with them and they said it was in the works, but not yet. Too intrigued since your reviews ?

  2. Cyn says:

A lot of facial products include SPF in it. Is it neccessary to apply SPF lotion if my BB cream already have SPF protection?

  3. chenyze says:

hey sorry I’m a bit confused. so beside the lower SPF, is there any other reason why someone would not want the fewer ingredients in the kids’ version? I remember you saying that you don’t like products with a long list of ingredients too! d=

  4. sesame says:

They only started offering shipping to Singapore recently due to the increased demand. I believe if there are more requests from the other countries, they’ll include those as well.

I’ll be curious to how you’ll find the sunscreen. Texture-wise, it’s very different from the LRP or L’Oreal products you use as those contain alcohol. This one is more oil based, but it isn’t greasy on application. In addition, I hope the high zinc oxide content won’t act up on your skin as I remembered you have issues with some products containing high zinc oxide.

  5. sesame says:

If the BB cream already has active sun protection ingredients, then it’s good by itself – best if they’re those I listed here:

  6. sesame says:

Thanks for remembering what I wrote. ? There are no issues with the lesser ingredients in Kid Safe Screen but here, I was making a comparison with MVO Moisturizing Face Screen Plus when I wrote about the Kid Safe Screen having fewer ingredients. If you look at MVO Moisturizing Face Screen Plus, the ingredient list isn’t too long but there are some stuff there that are helpful for those with pigmented skin.

  7. Grace says:

Is one pump = 1/4 teaspoon? I read that that’s the amount of sunblock we should be applying on our face alone, if we are to get the stated amount of protection on the bottle.

  8. sesame says:

Yes, a full pump is about 1/4 tsp.

  9. Don Raimond says:

The Marie Veronique Kid Safe Screen is the best for daily use I found of the top 10 on EWG’s latest listing. Non-nano zinc oxide and not greasy or oily or hot when applied, nor irritating. The Kid Safe Screen also has minimal to no odor, and what little odor there is is not nauseating. The only suggestion I submitted to Marie Veronique is that they might consider making the same Kid Safe Screen with a higher spf, though I am learning that spf is not necessarily all that it is trumped up to be.

  10. sesame says:

I like sunscreens with SPF30 but a difference of 5 mark is okay for me. Yes, the smell is minimal…not unpleasant; otherwise my kid would have refused to use this.

  11. Christine Wong says:

I noticed that you applied MV sunscreen over facial oil. Was it the reason that you didn’t notice any white cast?

I am using Biore & Sofina sunscreen, if I don’t apply any moisturizer or facial oil underneath, I find both of them are dry, flaky & leave white cast.

Have you done it without facial oil? If so, have you noticed any white cast?

I am looking for a physical sunscreen that is non tacky & leaves no white cast even I don’t apply any moisturizer underneath.

  12. sesame says:

If I don’t use the facial oil and just use the sunscreen, my skin would feel drier. The whitecast is still minimal although visible…I think it might be because my skin is quite fair.

I read some reviews that the Devita sunscreen doesn’t leave whitecast but I’m not sure. It’s a physical sunblock though.

  13. tam says:

Would you recommend MVO face screen plus or the kids safe secreen for oily skin/acne? Ever since reading your reviews, I have been really wanting to try thier sunscreens…
As well, I use grapeseed oil as a moisturizer, but now I just use Suki balancing day lotion.

    Thanks in advance!

  14. sesame says:

If it’s oily skin, my suggestion is to use either of them neat, which means you don’t apply any other oil or moisturizer beneath. MVO Face Screen Plus is oilier than Kids Safe and will leave more of a whitecast. I find the Kids Safe a tad drying on its own when I wear it alone on my neck. It’s good when I use it on top of my facial oil. Btw, I have combination skin type.

  15. sesame says:

Hi Tam: I gave your question more thoughts and was wondering if you know why your skin is oily. The reason I ask is because your face may also be oily because it is not receiving sufficient moisture. In that case, between the two, I would recommend MVO Face Screen Plus.

  16. Tam says:

To be honest, I don’t think I am getting enough moisture. Even at times I use both grapeseed and suki, and yet after my skin does feel a little tight. I think it’s my facewash that is a bit too harsh on my skin. I use a 2% salicylic acid wash…

What kind of finish does the MVO Face Screen have? I have gym at school, and I don’t have much time to touch up.

Anyways, thanks so much for the adivce, your always so helpful sesame!

  17. sesame says:

Finish? It works well for me as a makeup primer. I’m fair so the whitecast is very slight. It’s just nice when I apply foundation over. I don’t touch up at all. I understand some people get a bit of streaks with this at the end of the day so it may vary with individuals.

I think you might want to consider changing your cleanser. Use one that is gentle rather than so strong.

  18. Meredith L says:

I just used Kid Safe Screen outside in the sun and partial shade for the afternoon on my family while spending a day in the park. We all were sightly sun burnt even after applying every hour. It wasn’t a bad burn but noticeable. I hated seeing my child beet red! When I looked on their website it and they state if you are using it for a prolong time to reapply and use Face Screen Plus first and then Kid Screen. Really? That just seemed to absurd to spend $50 for two products that might work. We have yellow/orange tan skin tones and we were all left looking ghostly and pale. Not for us!

Glad it worked for you because it’s such a great idea! Hopefully they will improve on Kid Safe Screen for the rest of us.

  19. sesame says:

I wouldn’t want to apply both products cos that’s very drying with all the zinc oxide and you’re right too…too much money.

I use Kids Safe on my kid when he heads out to the pool about 3pm in the afternoon or when he does sports in school. So far, it’s good cos I don’t see his skin reddening or turning dark. I’m not sure if it has to do with the fact that we’re Asians and the skin type could be different in terms of exposure to the sun?

But this is probably one of the better ones in terms of mineral sunscreen I’ve tried for my boy. It’s a tad drying though after I’ve used it for awhile now.
