Review: Avalon Organics Bath & Shower Gel

I spotted the Avalon Organics range of products at Watsons and promptly bought two bottles of their bath and shower gel after looking at their price tag. I still have bottles of brand new shower gel sitting in my bathroom but these were irresistible as each 350ml bottle was going for S$10.90. I considered that price to be cheap and I didn’t even realize that there was a promotion and in the end, I only paid S$18 for both. There were four types of shower gel; lemon, lavender, rosemary and peppermint. I picked the first two because their scent appealed to me.

Contains 70% organic ingredients
The Avalon Organics Bath & Shower Gel are made with 70% organic content. I didn’t really scrutinize the ingredients very thoroughly because I’m less particular about products I use for the body. As a whole, I was happy that the Avalon Organics Bath & Shower Gel do not contain parabens, phthalates, fragrance, harsh preservatives, sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate and are stated to comprise 100% vegetarian ingredients. Although both lemon and lavender are considered photosensitive ingredients but I figured out that they wouldn’t hurt since they’re just shower gel for my body.

Lavender vs lemon
Lavender is a popular choice as the smell is lovely and soothing. In fact, the bottle I picked was already the last on the shelf. However, the scent of lavender didn’t come across as very strong when I actually used it on my body. It’s rather mild, especially when I compare it with the Ahava one I have been using. The shower gel is said to be gentle and suitable for even extra-dry skin. Well, this shower gel doesn’t contain SLS and it shows up with a pH level of 7 when I tested it so I guess it’s okay since that means it’s pH neutral. Lemon, on the other hand, is very invigorating. I actually thought the scent was too strong but liked it as soon as I used it. It’s very refreshing and great for those sleepy mornings. If your skin isn’t exceptionally dry and you like a strong citrus smell, you’ll probably love this.

Cleanse well without leaving behind a residue
The Avalon Organics Bath & Shower Gel uses sugar-based and coconut-based ingredients for cleansing. They foam and cleanse well, do not leave my skin overly squeakly clean and drying. At the same time, unlike most of the naturally formulated shower products, Avalon Organics’ do not leave behind a “film” over my skin. But that also means they contain less moisturizing properties and so I’ve to remember to moisturize with a body lotion afterwards – especially after using the lemon shower gel.

Other Avalon Organics products at Watsons
The prices of the Avalon Organics range seem rather affordable. Besides the bath and shower gel, I had wanted to purchase their hand and body lotion too but changed my mind when I noticed dimethicone listed right on top of the ingredients; that’s an ingredient I’m not fond of in my skin care products. I also noticed that Watsons is also carrying some of their shampoos, conditioners, facial serums and moisturizers but I can’t remember the price and if they’re cheaper than what’s available at Nature’s Farm. Anyone knows?

I got this from the one at Compass Point. I assume the range should be available at the bigger outlets.

  5. sesame says:

It’s cheap and good…but I still love my Ahava.

Hope you’ll like it. I was thinking of getting Rosemary at first but the scent didn’t appeal. I forgot to mention the Lemon actually smells like a dishwashing detergent but it’s nice when used in the bath. Reminds me of Zest soap.

Hey! A totally out of the blue question…But I was just wondering…if using a chemical sunscreen and then applying a physical over it after 30 minutes works? Or if blending them together works? Because I want to use thinkbabys spf 30, 25% micronized zinc oxide(btw is micronized zinc bad?if it is then I’ll use Loving Naturals Organic Sunscreen, but what bothers me with that is that it contains olive oil…doesn’t olive oil attract uv rays to dig deeper into the skin? if so can you recommend a physical sunblock with high amount of zinc oxide, preferably a sunscreen containing over 20% zinc oxide) and la roche posay spf 50+ ppd 30, containing both mexoryl xl and sx as active ingredients…I’m obsessed with sunscreen and to me it’s very important to protect myself well, especially against UVA rays. I’m definately a stop-the clock girl! Haha I’ve researched all over the net about this but I could not find anything -.-, oh well …thanks beforehand!

OH excuse my misspellings! I’m in a hurry that’s why!

  9. sesame says:

I’m not exactly sure but it might seem that you can get double protection. The chemical sunscreen filtering the rays from within your skin and the physical one blocking them. However, I’m just concern that applying both might cause problems like clog pores and stress out your skin. Actually some of the sunscreens do have both chemical and physical sun protection ingredients. So perhaps those may work for your purpose?

I use Avalon Organics all the time!! and i’m glad this brand is receiving some limelight on your blog. I can’t remember the prices off hand, but in Nature’s Farm, there’s sometimes 25% discount when u purchase two of Avalon Organics items, so i’m always stocking up on my lavender face moisturiser and their shower gels during their sale ?

  11. sesame says:

Yes, I read that you like their moisturizer and that’s why I remember to check it out now that it’s Watsons.

  12. Keidi says:

Sesame, i read that Watson’s having sale till early november for Avalon’s shower gel. 3 for $20! very affordable! I’m currently using this range for a month plus as I find EO a bit costly overtime! Nevertheless, EO’s scent is to die for. However, I think Avalon is not bad too! ?

  13. sesame says:

I still have Avalon’s shower gel but I haven’t been using for awhile since I switched to 100% Pure. Don’t think I’ll buy for now.

Hey! I’m a relatively new reader of your blog but after reading through a good number of your posts, you have yourself a fan ? Just wanted to check, though, I recently used Avalon’s body lotion on my face (silly, I know, but I was too sleepy and didn’t realize), rubbing it over my forehead & temples… I’m a little worried after reading what you posted about dimethicone, so, my question is, do you think it’ll be alright? Much love and thanks, xx.

  15. sesame says:

You should be fine…no issues. I avoid dimethicone and other silicones only because I find they do “coat” the skin and my personal theory is that after awhile, you might find your products no longer seem to work as well. Just finish up whatever you have and when you’re done, then move to something with lesser or no silicones if possible. Anyway, if the ingredient is lower down on the ingredient list, the content could be too little to create any adverse effects on the skin.

    Hi Sesame
You mentioned Avalon Organics Body Lotions contain dimethicone… I’m on my second bottle of their Lavender Hand and Body Lotion (my husband is also a fan of it) and I feel the need to clarify that though the Lemon lotion contains dimethicone, the Lavender lotion does not contain dimethicone. I am not sure about the other lotions. I had wanted to switch to Lemon after my first Lavender bottle just to try something different but decided against it when I saw dimethicone on the ingredient list. I then triple-checked that the Lavender version does not indeed contain this ingredient. You might want to give it a try next time! Cheers

  17. Sesame says:

I see…maybe I’ll try it next time. Kinda strange that they have different ingredient list but thanks for the heads up!

  18. Shwan Marsh says:

For the last 2 years I didn’t used any kind of soap, gel or shampoo into my body or hair. I just wanted to avoid all those supernatural chemicals used on those. Believe me, I needed some time to got used on that way but it was really effective. But after a while you convinced me enough to try this shower gel once. They are cost effective as well….

The organic shower gel is excellent. All the natural products are not harmful to the health. I think you may write an article about organic shampoo if you can. Thanks for the tips that you have shared.
