Total Beauty: Flattering makeup for Asian faces

Recently, I had to tell someone who said that I look like Lucy Liu to get her eyes checked and glasses changed. I wasn’t flattered by the comment but neither was I that annoyed; I was just surprised. Maybe she was fooled by the pigmentation on my face and mistook them for freckles? Anyway, even though there are a lot of Asian women in the world, no two Asian women are exactly the same. So how on earth would I look like Lucy Liu?

I will definitely have to learn better makeup techniques in order to look anything close to her. And someone I need to learn from is celebrity makeup artist and author of “Asian Faces: The Essential Beauty and Makeup Guide for Asian Women”, Taylor Chang-Babaian, who gave Total Beauty her expert guidance on how to recreate flawless and fun celeb makeup looks for Lucy and others. Chinese in US always look weird with those make-up. Korean celebs have nice make-up on the other hand. But seriously, make-ups are unneeded for most. It is okay to look normal!

when i was in melbourne for my sister’s wedding, the make up artist who did my makeup commented that i looked nothing like my sister in terms of features or semblance (something that i’ve heard for decades and that my family agrees. in-house joke that i’m picked up from the rubbish bin), and also commented that my facial structure was very japanese, which quite surprised me because that’s a first one for me. but she still didnt do a good job on makeup that day so i’m not so sure what to do about it. lol.

I think there is a difference between makeup styles of makeup artistes based in the West and those based in Asia. They tend to have different objectives. The tendency here is to create a fair and flawless appearance whilst in the West, it’s a healthier and natural appearance they’re after. The Korean and Japanese favour a dolly, large round eyes appearance so there’s a lot more heavy eye makeup. That’s my impression, at least..especially when I flip through Japanese fashion and beauty magazines. All the models look identical in features and makeup style.

ahh sad to see no japanese beauties up there ;[ but there arent many in hollywood i guess.

i have to say, ive always thought that american makeup looks hideous on asian women. heavy black eyeliner, red lipstick… almost like they are trying to create a ‘typical asian face’, which really just disguises their natural features. in asia, makeup is used alot more to enhance and i think asian makeup styles are so much more flattering. in japan, the makeup style favoured is ‘mejikara’, or ‘eye power’ (basically drawing attention to the eyes) whereas in america it seems just plastered on. but thats just my opinion haha

I think their makeup is different from those in Asia but they seem okay to me…more natural I think.

  6. sesame says:

    Was she Asian?

  7. sesame says:

You’re right! Here is all about flawless skin. That’s why the Japanese foundations are better in coverage. I actually quite like how Lucy Liu look for example. It’s natural and I like her freckles showing.

  8. sesame says:

I think they look quite nice…I rather like them as they’re natural and at least they don’t all look the same. The one I don’t like is Zhang Ziyi. Her makeup is exactly what you’ve described especially the red lipstick.

  9. Raelynn says:

Nope. But we agreed not to cover every single scar on my face because that would look too fake and unnatural so she only concealed this huge spot I had on my nose and she was spot on in terms of foundation colour. the place that she didn’t do well wasn’t so much of the coverage, more of the way she did the shading and the makeup looked quite flat in natural light.

  10. sesame says:

I see. In the pictures here, Zhang Ziying look rather flat too. It’s the makeup for sure cos she has looked better.

  11. flym says:

I like the natural look better too, where foundation is meant to even out skin tone so freckles would still be visible. I agree, Japanese foundation tend to focus on coverage; ladies here seem to like full coverage makeup.

  12. sesame says:

Ya…that’s why I always get commons like “you’re not wearing makeup” cos my pigmentation shows and I don’t cover those up. (hard too)

  13. Rinka says:

yeah i was mainly looking at zhang ziyi and connie chung xP i think sandra oh and the korean woman from lost (her name skips my mind) look really gorgeous in those photos though

  14. sesame says:

I don’t like Zhang Ziyi personally. But that red lipstick is very unflattering for her.

  15. Jyoan says:

Hmmm, I think there is definitely differences. But I am not professional enough to differentiate…

I recently perfected the look of the Dior Model for the Ultra High Glass! And I find that the colour tone and combination used there are really flattering, even on my really not fair and yellow skin… LOL. The Dior Model is white, of course. =)

Dior seems to have products that are quite suitable for our skin and skin tone. I often hear raves but I have yet to try them myself.
