Martha Tilaar opens at Marina Square in S’pore

Martha Tilaar, a leading cosmetic brand from Indonesia, has opened its first international store at #02-341 in Marina Square Mall. The shop carries three range of beauty products made from Indonesia’s natural ingredients and are all developed specifically for Asian skin type living in the tropics.

I was not familiar with Martha Tilaar until the media launch last week, and learnt that the company has a stronghold in Indonesia, holding 20% of the local cosmetic market with beauty schools, salons, spas, and 14 shops throughout the country. All their products are developed in Indonesia according to international standards as they are an ISO certified organization. I was even more surprised to learn that the company has 4 hectares of organic plantation and they’ve developed their first organic range, which has been launched first in Singapore under the brand “Sariayu Solusi”.

Sariayu Solusi organic range
The range, which took the company two years to develop, basically contains 100% organic grape seed oil and licorice extract and consists of cleanser, toner, face serum, night cream and eye cream. They also have foundation and in future, will release their face wash, face scrub and sun protection cream. At the moment, the brand isn’t certified organic as to meet certification, the products need to contain 70% organic ingredient contents. But the company has said they are in the process of working towards obtaining certification.

Dewi Sri Spa range – Classic Series
This comprise a wide range of home spa products such as body wash, body scrubs, massage oils, body lotions, body mask and body salt. The blend of exotic rice extract and essential oils in the formulation provide rejuvenating and whitening benefits.

Dewi Sri Spa range – Signature Series
What’s interesting about this series is that some of the ingredients used are rather unique, such as the passion of mangosteen, cucumber melon, mango, pomegranate peach, Javanese rose, white hibiscus, malikka splendor, virgin coconut oil and white tea, just to name a few.

Sariayu make up range
Martha Tilaar also carries various cosmetic collections that are pre-packaged as a kit. Each box typically consists an eyeshadow, a blush, a lipstick and a lip color.

Sariayu Jamu Garden tea
The products that caught my eye was the range of herbal tea. Those of you familiar with Jamu will know that this is great for slimming. Others include detox tea, diabetic tea, antioxidant tea, diuretic tea and even aphrodisiac tea.

Market positioning
Although the products are positioned as being made from Indonesia’s natural ingredients, they are not completely natural. I still found them to contain various chemical additives. That was why I only left the shop with two packets of tea. However, I have to concede that their prices are attractive and many of their products are under S$20, making them very affordable. I also think that those who love home spa products might find the products appealing because they smell really delicious.

Increasing presence in Asia
The Marina Square outlet is the first in Singapore. Martha Tilaar plans to add another two to three outlets in Singapore; the next shop slated to be opened is likely at Vivo City. Those outside of Singapore can also look forward to their increased presence in the region as the company has said it is also targeting to try out Malaysia, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong and Tawian markets soon.

what chemical additives do you remember?

    Hi Sesame,

That’s exactly how I feel. I also visited the store, but didn’t buy anything after checking the ingredients. There are still many better natural products in the market. Really wish I could support my home country brand *sigh*

  3. sesame says:

Some of the ones I can remember on top of head – SLS, alcohol, parabens and fragrance. Depending on the product…some look quite okay considering the price points.

  4. sesame says:

I know what you mean…usually we like to support our local brands as far as possible. At the same time, we want our money’s worth.

  5. Stella says:

    Hi,

May I know what concealer are you using to cover your blemishes?

    Thanks

  6. Miss Vinny says:

Awww what a shame about all those addictives. Hmmmm… I would give their tea a shot but since it’s more for medical conditions, I think not since you’ve no idea what really goes into those formulas.

Oh and Jamu actually refers to the name of the herbal medicine practised in Indonesia.

Their cosmetics look kinda interesting though but they should also offer loose forms for those who want only 1 to 2 pieces.

I don’t really conceal my blemishes as mine are quite hard to conceal well too. But at the moment, I use Ecobeau BB Cream Plus for my under eye area and to even out some of my uneven skin tone. Don’t fancy the ingredients too much but I usually receive compliments when I use that.

  8. sesame says:

Yes, the tea are interesting as they have a variety. Prices for a big pack starts from $15, so quite affordable. I have three packs now but haven’t started drinking – one for detox, one for ageless skin and one for diuretic. (3rd pack was given in the goodie bag)

For the cosmetics, maybe you can check again when you’re at the store. Perhaps they offer single items and I’ve missed that.

Looks like most certified organic brands still comes from the West.

  10. sesame says:

True…cos the organic market is more established there. We have a lot to catch up.

May I know what kind of tea leaves or ingredients used in the diuretic one? I’m trying to control my water retention problem.

  12. Miss Vinny says:

Okay sure about the cosmetics. =)

    Btw, anyone here uses clarifying shampoos? What are some decent ones for getting rid of buildup from oily scalp? *sighs* Hoping to get samples from Whoopeekiddies ‘cos I’m so tired of buying bottle after bottle of shampoo. x_X;;

  13. Miss Vinny says:

Err I meant: “oily and ultra sensitive scalp”.

Wonder how LucidoL’s deep cleansing/clarifying shampoo works. Yes, it’s not natural or organic but I’m willing to give anything effective a shot. =P

  14. sesame says:

It’s written as Java Tea (Orthosiphon aristatus) and supposedly good for removing kidney stones and improving urinary system. Not sure if it helps with water retention.

  15. sesame says:

I used the EO one and liked it but seems that EO don’t work well for you.

So your hair is oily? Have you tried The Body Shop? They have a new range that is silicone and SLS free. Tried it and it’s not bad but the volume is not so great.

  16. Miss Vinny says:

Ahh yes the Body Shop. Will give them a look tomorrow or the day after.

Yep it’s a shame about EO. =o It’s likely some of the herbs(herbs can be very strong) and also, some of the oils.

Yep I only realised recently that my scalp is oily. Because see? When it’s not wet, it feels silky smooth but when I wash my hair, it becomes very oily.

Chagrin Valley’s shampoo bar did help a lot but it kept burning my skin. ? Maybe I should put on some sort of cap or cloth over my face when using it… lol.
