Don’t sweat the makeup if you perspire buckets

Do you perspire a lot? Well, I don’t. But I do know that perspiration, when combined with makeup, isn’t good news for our skin. In fact, it may result in pimples and in some instances, something call sweat acne. So perhaps it’s a good idea not to use makeup when you’re into any of the following activities:

1.When you are exercising or working out intensively
Makeup, especially thick foundation will melt and combine with the sweat to block pores and cause blemishes. This is sometimes referred to as sweat acne. It is really better to cleanse off makeup before exercising or if you really need to use makeup, apply it thinly or use loose powder or mineral makeup, which allows your skin to breathe better.

2. When you are in a hot sauna or steam bath
I don’t fancy sauna but I know some people like it because they claim it refreshes them. Or perhaps some indulge in sauna in the hope of losing some fats. What I do know is that you’ll perspire a lot when you’re in a sauna and hence, your makeup is going to melt and when that happens, it’s going to cause problems of block pores too. Some women may forget that they’re wearing makeup and forget to remove prior to going into the steam room. Well, this is why it’s always good to check the mirror often!

3. When you are out frolicking under the hot sun
Obviously, this is going to cause your makeup to melt in particular if you have oily skin. Hence, if you’re going to be out under the sun for prolonged period, then just skip the makeup but slather lots of sunscreen instead. And there’s always that pair of sunnies to help shield some of your uneven skin tone.

4. When you are doing housework
Okay, this is a bit ridiculous but I’m telling you as it has happened to me. I sometimes come back from work and proceed straight into my household chores, forgetting to cleanse my face before. I mean, I thought it made more sense for me to bathe afterwards. A few times I’ve noticed, my skin developed some small red bumps on the side of my face, where I tend to drip with perspiration. They were not pimples but noticeable enough. So now I know, it’s better to cleanse my face before doing my housework!

5. When you are eating a steamboat buffet and there is no aircon
I read an account from this local DJ who went for a steamboat buffet at a public foodcourt with no aircon and found her pores enlarged and her skin texture really rough like the sandpaper afterwards because a fan was blowing all the hot steam into her face. She later realized that the combination of heat and perspiration had taken a toll on her skin as she was wearing rather thick makeup during the buffet and it took a few days for her skin to be returned to normal. So the combination of heat, perspiration and makeup can be disastrous!

Well, I know I’m going to have steamboat buffet during the Chinese New Year. But I’m going to make sure that I don’t have the heat blown into my face for sure!

  1. I once saw a girl who wore thick makeup in my RPM class. The combination of her sweats and d melting makeup was definitely not a pretty sight! and to make it worse, she wear a sweatshirt.. Man, she stinks!

  2. Ewww…

I would only keep my makeup on at the gym if and only if I go for stretching type classes, not sweating buckets and no time to remove my makeup, shower and put on again.

For any others, I would remove. Double cleansing, the usual works.

  3. LOL, I laughed when I read the last tip… not to apply make-up when going for a steamboat restaurant with no aircon. Makes real sense. Haha!

I don’t wear make-up on a daily basis but I realized that sometimes, even certain types of moisturizers or sunblocks can have similar effects when you don’t clean them up before working out. There was time when I was experiencing breakouts everytime I went for my gym class and all along, I thought it was simply because I was sweating a lot. But once, I wasn’t able to apply any sunblock or moisturizer because I was late and rushing then that’s the only time I didn’t get any breakouts.

    • Could be because most of the moisturizers and sunscreens have ingredients that can clog pores when mixed with perspiration. I guess the extent of the problem also depends on skin types.

  4. I stay away from makeup on the days when I need to do more physical activities.

I don’t perspire much but the itchy feeling I get when makeup and perspiration gets mixed. It is just too much for me to bear.

  5. Hi…Nice article…. I have learned and accepted that i’m one of those people who cannot wear make up due to perspiration. yes, i sweat alot. Period. And living in a humid doesn’t help…So wearing make up only at a very very special occasion and i make sure that it is the last thing i’m going to do and it does need to be in a air conditioned room… So i choose to have a nice skin which i don’t than having make up and suffer the consequences afterwards..

  6. I like wearing makeup especially when I go out in the sun. I think the SPF of my foundation can be an extra shield for the sun.

Though I notice one or two pimples would pop up on my face after I go out with makeup, I carry on the habit, because I think protecting my face with sunblock is more important than a few pimples as long as I cleanse my face thoroughly afterward.

  7. I do test makeup at the gym sometimes or during my outdoor latenight runs (gym – ahem only when I go very late at night with very few people around). Best way to test Waterproof/non-smudging eyeliners, mascara and eyeshadow primers or eyeshadows that claim to be creaseproof. But I draw the line there. No foundation to clog up the pores, although I did test that out once or twice during my initial foray into the world of mineral foundation.

Going for night jog later and will be testing a few eyeliners that I bought ;)

  8. I wash my face before exercising (specially now that i am doing hot yoga where i sweat buckets!). The only down side is I have to wash more times on days I exercise which could be drying…

I have seen people in the gym with thick make up and I wonder how their skin will suffer post the clogging! Yaiks…

  9. lol….if walking can cause perspiration, that girl dont need to wear make up ever. lol
