DIY Beauty: hot oil treatment for curly, frizzy hair

All right, I don’t have curly or frizzy hair now but I did have them for maybe 10 years of my life. So here’s something that I used to do for my then curly hair once a week – using a hot oil hair treatment. The only difference is that I used a commercial blend back then but today, I’m going to share with you a hot oil hair treatment using normal vegetable oil. In this instance, it’s extra virgin oil oil from my kitchen cabinet.

Share: what skincare ingredients do you avoid?

Last week, I asked about your favorite skin care ingredient and this week, I thought I’ll continue by asking what skin care ingredient do you avoid and why? Even though I’m more inclined towards using natural and organic skin care, regular readers know that I’m not a purist. While I have a Top 10 skin care ingredients that I avoid but as a whole, I do not avoid them from a toxic standpoint but rather, a beauty standpoint such as fear of photosensitivity or skin suffocation. I can even accept some ingredients that are listed as the “dirty dozens” in my skin care and one of them is the much flogged-to-death parabens.

Tips on using essential oils for health & beauty

I was clearing my stash recently and noticed amongst others, that I have numerous essential oils of the same scent.  Actually, I’m not a heavy user of essential oil.  I probably used more in my younger days. The ones I have currently are mainly used for my son and in some DIY concoctions. Even then, I don’t use them on a daily basis. So what essential oils do I own and what do I use them for?

BOD Premium Blend Shampoo for soft, silky hair

Since discovering that oily shampoo can make my hair oilier, I went on a hunt for a naturally formulated shampoo for normal hair. I decided to give BOD Premium Blend Shampoo a try since I like their BOD White Tea Cleansing Gel and this shampoo is described to be of salon quality and suitable for all hair types. Like the BOD cleanser, this shampoo is made with certified organic ingredients, essential oils and herbal extracts ; it is free of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), propylene glycol and parabens.

Certified organic ingredients ≠ certified organic

I’m quite sure many of us are quite confused with the various organic certification and standards in the market for skin care and cosmetics. Unless you read the labels carefully and do your research, chances are, you maybe green washed into thinking that some products are certified organic when they are not exactly so. For example, I see more and more products these days bearing self-made logos that state their ingredients are certified organic, which can mislead some consumers to think that the products are certified organic. I’ve even come across products labeled as such and yet, only one ingredient is certified organic. That’s downright deceptive!
