Jane Iredale loose & pressed mineral foundations

Jane Iredale is probably one of the earliest, if not the earliest cosmetic company to introduce a full line of makeup based on minerals. I read a lot about their products back when mineral makeup was the rage but the funny thing is, I never got to try them until now. If I recall correctly, I wasn’t too keen on some of the ingredients I saw and so I basically gave the products a miss back then.

These are samples on the loose mineral foundation and press powder that I was given to try at the beginning of the year but I never really tried them till a few months down the road. I started using the press powder first, and I just wasn’t impressed and so these basically sat somewhere until recently when I spotted the loose mineral foundation and decided to give it a go.

Amazing Base Mineral Foundation SPF 20 in Ivory US$42

Active Ingredients:
Titanium Dioxide 14%, Zinc Oxide 6%.
Ingredients: Mica, Boron Nitride, Zinc Stearate, Dimethicone, Stearic Acid, Plankton Extract, Algae Extract, Pomegranate Extract. May Contain: Iron Oxides, Ultramarines, Chromium Oxide Greens.

There are some ingredients there that I may have problems with based on my experience using mineral foundation. However, this has worked a-okay for me so far. It is also the first mineral foundation I’ve tried with silicones and well, I’ll admit that the application is easier with this compared to some other mineral foundations I’ve tried. This one yields medium coverage for me and I like that it is fairly long lasting, makes my face look more radiant and does not streak nor oxidize. But I noticed my pores were slightly more visible after application, and it was the same whether I applied with a brush or a sponge. My skin also became slightly oilier after a few hours so I think the formulation might be a little drying for me, especially since I use a zinc oxide based moisturizer. Overall, I would rate it above average but it’s not an item I would purchase though.

PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation SPF 20 in Bisque US$49.50

Active Ingredients:
Titanium Dioxide 14%, Zinc Oxide 3%.
Ingredients: Mica, Boron Nitride, Dimethicone, Stearic Acid, Plankton Extract, Algae Extract, Pine Bark Extract, Pomegranate Extract. May Contain: Iron Oxides, Ultramarines, Chromium Oxide Greens.

Okay, this is product confuses me because it is called a base but in the description, it is stated to work as a foundation, powder, concealer and sunscreen all in one. I don’t like it as a foundation because it causes streaking after a few hours. Also, I found this more difficult to apply compared to the loose mineral foundation. As for being a concealer, well, again, I don’t see much merit of using this. So basically, this product does nothing for me. And may I add that it’s very expensive!

Overall summary
Jane Iredale Amazing Base Mineral Foundation has some merits although it did not work like a charm for my skin. I’m saying this in comparison with some other mineral foundations I’ve tried. It will probably work better for those with normal skin conditions without too much skin blemishes. And as you can read, I’ve no love for the PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation. Funnily though, the Amazing Base Mineral Foundation received a 3.9 out of 5 rating by 241 users while the PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation received 4 out of 5 rating by 523 reviewers! So it’s basically as case of “your mileage may vary!” However, one thing I’ll say is that I won’t buy this product because I have tried others, like LA Splash’s mineral foundations that are priced lower and perform better.

Jane Iredale’s products are easily available in US but in Singapore, the brand is selectively available so you need to run a search online to find out where if you’re interested.

Despite raves for mineral makeup, I always have problems with mineral foundation because it makes my skin so dry & tight. It is even worse if I use a Zinc Oxide sunscreen below.

  2. sesame says:

Yeah…mineral foundation doesn’t suit all. I am okay with most, except those with long ingredient lists.

  3. Issa says:

i love mineral foundations because they look so natural on the skin, only downside is it’s a bit messy! ?

  4. sesame says:

Oh yes, they can be…also more wastage sometimes.

  5. L. says:

I guess I should be okay with mineral foundation during summer after my skin condition turned from super dry to super oily. lol

However, I personally find it very difficult to choose the correct shade, especially when ordering from an online shop….

The pressed powder is very expensive!! The ingredients seem to be very common to me, there’s nothing special to them and yet, this price? Wow! I’m speechless. Also, like you mentioned, the name itself is very confusing. It’s called base and should also work as a foundation? Then don’t name it base, because a base is something different.

I guess the brand started out targeting the patients who underwent cosmetic treatments so those can afford to splurge. As for the color, my experience is trial and error with online ordering. In the past, I would send them my photo and ask them to recommend too.

I’ve been trying Mineral Powder for my face. And bumps keep appearing. It’s quite disheartening coz most mineral powder doesn’t come cheap.

Still on my search for a good face powder..

  10. sesame says:

Probably some ingredients in there caused your skin to break out. Some pple just can’t use mineral powder.

  11. Liesl says:

The loose powder works really well for my skin type. I have pretty large pores around my nose area and it covers them up well. Also, it lasted almost the whole work day for me without much touchup usually. One of the best mineral powders I’ve tried so far for my skintype.

Are mineral make-up really better than other make-ups?

  13. sesame says:

Not necessarily so. It really depends on formulations and if they suit your skin type. I know of ladies who have tried all sorts of mineral makeup and found them to be unsuitable. Some mineral makeup can also be drying becos of the high zinc oxide and titanium dioxide content.

  14. sesame says:

That’s great. I’m glad it works well for you. Don’t know why it accentuate my pores more. Really depends on skin type I guess…
