♥Guest Post♥ Today’s post is by Sara Khong, who runs an online business selling fashionable jewellery at zikkos.com. Besides fashion, she is also passionate about alternative medicine, homemade cosmetics and home spa. During the weekends, she takes time off to read books on beauty and wellness, concocting cosmetics in kitchen, & pampering herself with home spa.As making my own shampoo from scratch would be difficult, so the next best thing is to dilute an existing shampoo and balance it with some natural oils and herbs. It’s a milder shampoo no doubt, but it can still cleanse as well.
Using your existing shampoo as the base
Here’s a recipe on herbal shampoo for normal hair that I found at nealsyardremedies.com:
- 50 % ordinary shampoo
- 45% herbal infusion (I use thyme)
- 4 % coconut oil
- 0.2 – 1 % lavender essential oil
The herbal infusion is made by putting the thyme in a pot of boiled water with a lid, and letting it steep in it, covered.
Milder shampoo can cleanse as well
My sister, who was my volunteer to try the shampoo thought that a milder shampoo would not cleanse her hair so well. However, that is untrue. First of all, the aim of a shampoo is to remove dirt (bodily secretion, dust, pollutants and residue from hair-grooming products like gel) from the hair. The active cleansing ingredients in commercial shampoo are known as surfactant/detergent, which remove dirt from the hair surface and disperse it into washing solution.
Milder shampoo is less harsh on your hair
The detergents are also responsible for the foams. Sometimes these detergents along with the other chemicals in the shampoo are so harsh that they stripped off the hair ‘s natural oil. Hence a conditioner is needed to repair this. It doesn’t mean that a shampoo that foam lesser won’t clean your hair as well. It just probably means that it’s milder.

Great!!! Imma try this at home.
sounds amazing.
Give it a try and see if it works for you. I understand from Sara that it cleansed her hair well.
I like to add oil into my normal shampoo when laziness hit me. Yes, it doesn’t cleanse as well, but the formula is more nourishing.
Oh you add oil? I suppose it’ll work for dry hair types but surely not for me. I can use oil on my hair as a pre-cleanse only.
oh…I do that only coz the regular shampoos have so much of surfactants that you can dilute them as much as 1/4th of their original quantity and still they shall cleanse your hair well!!!
Oh…interesting. It never occurred to me to dilute my shampoo but I do it for my son’s to stretch it.
