I didn’t smell like cat poo with Surya Henna Cream

I wonder how many of you remember the “amorous” Surya Henna Cream I posted back in April? Heheh okay, it wasn’t an amorous cream but rather, the cream came packaged in a box with an amorous looking image. Well, I finally tried the product about three weeks ago and am ready to tell you if this henna cream worked for me.

Peroxide & ammonia free
For those who missed my earlier preview, Surya Henna Cream hails from Brazil and is a semi permanent hair color said to not contain peroxide, ammonia, resorcinol, PPD, heavy metals or parabens. Instead the product uses both plant dyes and gentle hair dyes, including 15 high quality herbs and fruits to add conditioners to the hair. So this gentler and healthier cream will definitely appeal to many who are looking for a natural alternative to color their hair. I bought it from iHerb.com for less than US$10.

Pretty easy to use
It isn’t difficult to use this henna cream. Unlike other DIY hair dyes I’ve tried, this one requires me to wash my hair first. I then had to don my hands with disposable gloves to spread the cream on my hair instead of using a comb. But strangely, the nozzle of the product I bought had no hole. I am not sure if it’s because the one I had was faulty but the problem was quickly resolved with a pair of scissors.

Made my hair soft
The plus point about the Surya Henna Cream is that it does not leave any unpleasant ammonia scent so I didn’t smell like cat poo during my usage of this product nor after. There is a smell all right but it reminded me of chocolate! In addition, my hair felt exceptionally soft after using this cream and so it lives up to its promise of conditioning and moisturizing my hair. I didn’t even need to use hair conditioner afterwards. I also found it reversed the damage that the commercial hair dyes had done to my hair. The only gripe is that this leaves stains on my scalp but they were quickly washed away the day after when I started shampooing my hair.

Somewhat effective
This henna cream comes with a detailed product explanation sheet and in it, you’ll find information on how long to use this product for different hair color and needs. I had to leave this on my hair for an hour because I needed to cover my grays. Unfortunately, even after an hour, I could still see a few gray strands after I’ve washed and dried my hair. Maybe the dark brown doesn’t cover so well but I’m pretty sure the effects of this henna cream isn’t long lasting. After three weeks now, I definitely need another application because many of my grays are now showing.

Can be used frequently
But because the Surya Henna Cream contains gentler ingredients, it is said this product can be used quite frequently on our hair. However, I still prefer to space out the duration of usage – like three weeks or so if my grays can wait.

I don’t see this product as being more superior than those commercial hair dyes in terms of coverage but it is definitely gentler. In addition, there aren’t that many color options. However, I’m quite happy to continue using this for now because I’ve been a tad concerned about hair dyes that dry out my hair and cause more problems in the long run. In fact, I just ordered my second bottle even though one bottle can last me three applications for my short hair. So it’s really affordable. Don’t expect complete coverage if you have grays but I would recommend this if you’re looking for a gentler alternative to coloring your hair. And oh, do check out the story of love and temptation behind the amorous looking packaging in my preview. (^o^)

    i’m using this too!

i really like it cos it’s natural and so easy to apply and wash off as compared to the ones The Body Shop used to sell, which were clumpy (actual henna bits in it), hard to spread and equally hard to rinse off but oh-so-good for the hair.

anyways, i’m a new reader to your blog. stumbled on in while looking for sunscreens and after trawling your site for two or three days, have just ordered my very first bottle of marie veroniques face screen. bought a bottle of their kids one for my children too. thanks for your detailed and honest reviews. am so looking forward to receiving my mv package!

one query though, do i need to wash the face screen off with a make-up cleanser?

thanks again for maintaining this wonderful site! will definitely be following your blog posts cos i’m just a few years younger than you are and find your concerns and recommendations very relevant to me. ta!

I’ve never tried other types of henna…this is my first! So how long does the coverage last you?

Thanks for visiting and reading my blog. Come back often as I update almost daily. I also hope you’ll enjoy the MVO products as much as I do. And yes, you need to use a makeup remover / pre-cleanser to wash the face screen off.

thanks for your reply on the MVO face screen!

the coverage lasts me about 3 to 4 weeks, but only because my grey roots would be showing by then too. i’ve tried the black (it’s really quite black and took me a while to get used to) and chocolate (quite happy) and am going to try dark brown next for its reddish tint (from the iherb reviews). i keep it on for as long as i can tahan before washing it off, about an hour to two – the longer i leave it on, the richer the colour and glossier my hair looks. i actually left the body shop one on overnight once cos i started too late at night and dozed off. nothing happened to my scalp, thankfully, and the effect was really lovely! i felt like a shampoo ad girl with shiny auburn hair. will try to leave the dark brown on for at least three hours to see if it makes me feel like a shampoo ad auntie…

I use the dark brown and I found it to be quite dark but the color lightens up and it’s quite lovely. Just ordered the light brown and wonder how that’ll be. I’ll try chocolate next time and also leave it on longer like what you and Kah Ling did.

For the MVO Face Screen, it’s best to use with an oil. Some pple have complained that it’s hard to apply…you can try patting it in if that’s the case.

hee hee, you finally tried it. A few tips from a regular user, do not use the gloves that come with the box, i use fitting vinyl disposable gloves. Oh, and those disposable hotel shower caps. Rub some petroleum jelly on the hairline, that helps with staining. And i leave it on for 2 hours, that’s helps better with coverage. It lasts about 1 month for me, but then i wash my hair on alternate days.

The surya Restorative conditioner is also not bad. Is anyone out there using any other colors? I tried black (too black for my taste) and dark brown. Very tempted to try Chocolate….

    • Sesame says

Yes I finally did and thanks for the recommendation! Oh you left it on for 2 hours? I was concerned if I could leave it longer than the instructions…will extend the time next round.

I get better results with this product by:
    1. Leaving it on for several hours or overnight
    2. Using Dark Brown for gray roots & Chocolate for the rest of my hair
    3. Using Surya shampoo or at least a color-friendly shampoo that does not contain sodium laurel sulfate
    4. Using a henna conditioner with each shampoo; either Seya or Hask Super Henna & Placenta
By the way, the nozzle is not supposed to have a hole; it stays fresher that way & the directions state that you can snip off the end, which is scored to make that easy. Recap tightly if you aren’t using it all at once.

    • Sesame says

Oh so it doesn’t have a hole! I was wondering. 😛 I’m beginning to like this more and more. It can last me around 3 weeks…now I try to leave on for two hours. Maybe next time, I’ll leave it for longer.

  1. […] Surya Brasil Henna Cream, US$9.22 from iHerb I’m surprised this one has ended up in my favorite beauty buys. In fact, I’ve used like four bottles now! Well, it works well for me and I end up coloring my hair once a month now. I can see my hair looks healthy, unlike those who have their hair colored using the conventional dyes. Available at iHerb.com and my review of the product is here. […]
