I know a number of you are familiar with Badger sunscreens but I wonder how many of you are using this Badger Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF34. Well, the reason why I purchased this product was because it was on offer at US$4 at iHerb.com and it so happened that I wanted a water resistant mineral sunscreen for swimming and outdoor sports. However, given that I don’t really head outdoors that much, I started using this on my neck and arms daily.
The Badger brand needs no introduction. It’s an established brand in the natural category and I do like a number of their products as they do not use synthetic chemicals, fragrances, parabens, or GMOs. More importantly, their products are rich in certified organic ingredients. Unfortunately, I can’t say that I like the Badger Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF34 that much.

Natural scents
This Badger Sunscreen SPF34 uses 18.75% Zinc Oxide, which provides broad spectrum protection. It is free from essential oils and though it is indicated as unscented, it still retains the subtle natural scents of cocoa butter and beeswax. In addition, this sunscreen is now made from Vitamin E solely derived from sunflower, instead of mixed sources.
Safe for children
I like that this sunscreen is water resistant for at least 40 minutes, and safe for children of all ages. However, in terms of texture, this is really thick and rich. It’s a challenge to use this on my face but it’s okay for the neck and arms…for a couple of hours at least.

Drying after a few hours
Initially, I quite like using this as I found that if I don’t use too much, it can be blended quite well into my skin and the whitecast is not too obvious. However, after using this for about two weeks now, I realized that this sunscreen is drying. By the end of the day, I can see a thin powdery texture on my arms. So I cannot use this continuously but only on some days. And in that sense, this product is good for outdoor sports and not so much for daily usage.
Price and availability
The Badger Unscented Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF34 is retailing for US$14.40 at iHerb. I’ve stopped using this daily and since I don’t head out for sports that often, I’ll probably have my son to use this sunscreen when he goes swimming.

I hated this SPF. There is no way to make this look good on your face, especially under makeup. I tried it and returned it from my health food store because I knew I would never use it again. I’m currently looking for non-nano, micronized SPF…something that would look good under makeup and on my body. Hopefully something not oily too, but apparently that’s asking too much because I still haven’t found my holy grail. Although Badger is exactly like rubbing diaper rash ointment on your skin, so anything will be a step up! lol
Have you tried Devita? Check my review here: http://www.vivawoman.net/2011/05/31/devita-solar-protective-moisturizer-spf30/
i was going to get this from iherb. guess will drop it now. could you tell me which sunscreen are you using on the face and neck at the moment…
I use Marie Veronique Organics Moisturizing Sunscreen.
I hated this sunscreen! Oily & sticky as hell and extremely tacky.
Quite a shame really that the texture doesn’t apply so well on the face.
Yes i am looking for my HG hand lotion with sunscreen that i can applybefore going out. No luck so far. I saw my neighbor apply lotion to the back of her hand , then spread it to both hands with the backs of her hands so her palms are grease free. I have been doing that since
Apply hand lotion without using the palms? Wow, what a way!
I have a love hate relationship with sunscreen. Have tried so many brands that doesn’t work. Somehow they caused major breakouts on my skin and leaves my skin feeling dry. Plus the whitecast issue. So I avoid using sunscreen.
However, now that I’m using Paul Penders Herbal sunscreen, it seems to work. Definitely no breakouts, and just a slight dryness. BUT no whitecast.
Another brand I’ve tried that also worked was the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer which I’ve stopped using now that I’m into more natural products. This was the perfect product. Moisturizer, coverage and protection all in one. If only natural companies can come up with something similar.

Yeah, it’s hard to pick a good sunscreen that works and yet, have ingredients that you like. But I’m glad I found mine.
Nice to see all these suggestions for a good sunscreen. I haven’t found one that works for me. They all make me look like a ghost.

Yeah, it takes some trial and error to find the right one.
Hi Sesame!
We’re sorry to hear that you and your readers didn’t care for the texture of our sunscreen…. but good news! We’ve released much more aesthetic lotions for face that are less whitening, lighter, and even tested/approved non-comedogenic! Right now we offer 2 SPF16 versions: one Damascus Rose, and one Aloe Vera. This coming spring we’ll have higher SPF versions. If you’re interested (and located in the US), I’m happy to send you a 16 to try! Just shoot me an email.
We totally understand that these formulas are not for everyone – but we hope that you’ll continue to use our other stuff, and give our other varieties of sunscreens a try!
Warmly,
Badger Jentri
I’m not located in the US but am in Singapore. But I won’t mind ordering from iHerb if the price is appealing enough. Look forward to the higher SPF formulations!
