Simply Organic Oil Emulsion Haircolor @Ecorganics

Did you know that some hairdressers actually have very sensitive skin on their hands? Apparently, many of them have this problem because they’re in constant contact with chemicals such as ammonia on a long term basis. My ex-hairstylist has this problem and I know he has to take medication to curb the frequent flare-ups of eczema on his hands. So this is the reason why more salons are introducing ammonia-free permanent hair color. An example is Ecorganics I visited two weeks ago that uses a safer permanent hair color with Simply Organic Oil Emulsion Haircolor.

Not certified organic
Instead of ammonia, Simply Organic Oil Emulsion Haircolor is formulated with less toxic ingredients and offer rich, vibrant colors including reds and coppers that do not fade. As a result, customers can color their hair more often because their hair would not become dry and damaged over time. However, do not be fooled by the name as Simply Organic Hair Color products are not certified organic in their entirety. The company addresses this openly on their website and according to them, “the use of any claims of “certified organic” made when describing a permanent, professional hair color product is inappropriate, given the ingredients available today to produce such a product”.

Less toxic
Actually I don’t fully understand how this product works but from what I’ve read, the Simply Organic Oil Emulsion Haircolor range was formulated using many ingredients not commonly found in standard hair color products. I suppose what you really need to know about this product is that it is not natural-natural but it is definitely less toxic than the conventional professional hair dyes.

More gentle
So Simply Organic Oil Emulsion Haircolor is much gentler to the hair, scalp, the stylist and the general environment of the salon. There is no need for synthetic perfumes because there is no harsh ammonia odor to mask. Simply Organic Oil Emulsion Haircolor also insures perfect penetration because there are no coating waxes or traditional chemical viscosity boosters to “bust” through. In addition, the hair color uses olive oil as a key ingredient in its natural base. And to increase viscosity (thickness), Simply Organic Natural Fruit Pectin is added to the formulation by the haircolorist at the time of use.

Mix and match
The thing about such less toxic hair color is that they do not come in as many shades as the conventional brands. But the good thing is that Simply Organic Oil Emulsion Haircolor allows for some mixing. So that was what I chose for mine although I can’t remember what were the shades. It might have been mahogany and dark brown? Anyway, the color turned out quite dark initially but has lightened up with subsequent washes. I’m not sure how long the color will last me but I definitely like the feel of my soft smooth hair after the coloring.

Price and location
I had received the treatment on a complimentary basis but I was told the usual price to pay is S$88. I really don’t mind going back again except that the location at 1 Thomson Ridge isn’t all too convenient for me. But if you prefer a less toxic hair color, you might want to give the salon a try. I also had a ‘less toxic’ hair color experience about 2 months ago. The salon used O&M. The color turned out to be quite vibrant, didn’t dry my hair like the conventional hairdye and didn’t irritate my scalp. I had it at Focus Salon (forgot the actual street name because it’s a tiny street) near somerset. Can’t remember the price though because I got it on offer.

OMG…when I read at the start about your hairdresser…found the TOTAL opposite number to that one when I was a young boy watching a clay figure expert mould something…her hand where the most beautiful skin I had ever seen..even as a young boy I knew it must be the minerals in the clay..

I think I’m liking these organic hair coloring quite a bit. And cost wise, not so much different from conventional ones.

Reminds me of SKII story about the women who handed the rice to make sake.

Wow this is pretty cool. I’d like to try something like this and see whether or not it would leave my hair as dry as the conventional ones do.

I have been looking for something less harsh on the hair. Do you know of products available in the UK?

They are not available on the mass market because deriving the oil is a considerable task, involving not only taking the oil out of the plant, but the process to turn it into actual oil is a complicated procedure, and a different processes are used depending on the plant it’s being extracted from. Here is a good explanation of what an essential oil actually is, and how it’s produced.
