I always have a ready supply of bananas at home. My husband eats them. My son too. But I avoid fresh bananas at all costs. I’ll eat them cooked though. Like banana fritters. Those I love! So I figured out that I probably can turn the bananas at home into another snack or something. Why not bake them and have another type of food readily available for breakfast? I mean, bananas are supposedly healthy and they’re said to reduce menstrual cramps because they’re a good source of iron, magnesium and potassium. Not only that, bananas are great skin food too.
Benefits of bananas for our skin
Bananas, being rich in vitamin A, B, C and E make great anti-aging food because they can help maintain the elasticity of the skin. They also contain large amount of antioxidants to protect the body from free radical damage which lead to premature aging of the skin. In addition, bananas can apparently help with hydration too and that’s good news for our skin. Finally, bananas are rich in fiber which is great for those who are acne prone as they keep out toxins from your skin as your digestive system stay in optimum condition.
Preparing this dish is so simple and doesn’t take any culinary skills, apart from knowing how to prepare your oven that is. You only need three ingredients—bananas, cinnamon and sugar. If you don’t like sugar, you can substitute that with honey. For me, I have a ready bottle of cinnamon sugar and so I use that.
Sliced for baking
So here you see a fresh banana and well, you can just eat it raw after peeling off the skin. No biggie for most of you I guess. I prefer to take an addition step and that is, to warm the banana up. So how I do this is simple—just peel off the skin and sliced up the banana thickly like what you see below.
Preheat oven and final step
Next, prepare the oven for baking by preheating it to 200º C and place the sliced bananas on a sheet of tin foil. Thereafter, sprinkle some cinnamon sugar lightly over the sliced pieces. Just know that if you sprinkle too much of the cinnamon sugar, your bananas are going to turn out looking kinda burnt.
15 minutes and ready
The final thing you do is to put the tray of cinnamon sugar banana slices into the oven to bake for 15 minutes. The outcome is something like caramelized banana slices. I’ll concede they don’t seem all that tasty with the darkened roasted look but don’t be fooled by their appearances. They’re super yummy!
Best eaten warm
They’re best eaten warm though and I love the taste of this a lot! But one thing to admit is I like the taste and scent of cinnamon. I guess there are some people who dislike cinnamon and in this case, this won’t appeal at all. I suppose baking the banana slices with just honey can work but I doubt I’ll like them that much. Anyway, if you dislike eating bananas like me, then give this simple, no-brainer recipe a try. I understand that the nutritional value of the banana does not change even when baked. But here’s a warning: you might just go bananas over this simple dish and end up craving for more!
