Benefits of 100% unrefined Shea Butter

p1260058

I ordered the 10g Shea Butter sample from Yours Essentially recently because my son had some rashes around his mouth due to an outbreak from a food allergy. Because it is 100% unrefined, I didn’t have to worry about artificial fragrances or additional preservatives and was free to apply it to his face liberally. In fact, I learnt that Shea Butter is edible although I don’t think my son wants to eat it.

Citrus oils increase UV damage in sunscreens

sunscreen-ingredients

Last week I received a comment from Erik Kreider in one of my posts about the danger of citrus oils in sunscreen formulas. Erik by the way is a pharmaceutical scientist who created the Kabana skincare range including their zinc oxide based sunscreen.

Citrus oils actually increase UV damage because they tend to inhibit the very mechanisms that repair UV induced DNA damage. They also may inflate the tested SPF by acting as anti-inflammatories, effectively suppressing the erythemal response that is used to calculate the SPF value. The end result is a product that keeps you from getting sunburned but does little to protect you from skin cancers.

Is mineral makeup too drying?

Mineral Makeup Ingredients

Some time ago, a friend mentioned to me that her aesthetician told her that mineral makeup is too drying for our skin. I was pretty curious and I wanted to know why but I could not establish the reasons immediately. Then recently, when I started using my UV Natural Sunscreen, I noticed that my skin feels somewhat drier after a few hours and I got curious. Is it because of the 24.8% Zinc Oxide?  If that is the case, could it be the cause for mineral makeup to be too drying as well then?

Are you addicted to your lip balm?

Lip Balms

I’ve read about lip balm addiction sometime back but forgot about it until now when I was reminded via a new article on the topic. It’s quite interesting considering many of us, myself included, often say we’re hooked to our lip balms. Why could this be so? There appears to be a couple of reasons according to the feature on WJBF.

1. Psychological need
According to Marcia Driscoll, M.D., Dermatologist with the University of Maryland School of Medicine, overuse of lip balm likely “stems from a psychological need rather than a physical need.”
