Is Sea Buckthorn Oil a miracle worker?

sea-buckthorn-oil

I first learnt of Sea Buckthorn oil from Leon at her beauty forum Glowing Diva where she posted about how the oil can help combat wrinkles. And because it was available at Whoopeekiddies, I ordered a bottle to try out.

Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil has higher vitamin C
There are two types of Sea Buckthorn oil – one is the Sea Buckthorn Seed oil and the other is the Sea Buckthorn Berry oil and each is supposed to have their own benefits. The one I bought is the Sea Buckthorn Berry oil because it is the only one available at Whoopeekiddies.  This version is apparently higher in vitamin C and has Vitamins A, B1, B2, E, and other mixed Tocopherols and Phytosterols, Flavonoids plus numerous other essential fatty acids. It is a rich amber color and can stain our skin albeit temporarily and hence, can only be used in the night because it makes me look like a “huang lian po” which is literally translated to “brown face lady” in English.

Topical application great for skin conditioning and repair
Because of its high antioxidant values, Sea Buckthorn Berry Seed Oil makes for great skin conditioning and repairing. Many sources have stated that topical application of the oil has produced significant improvement in the symptoms of dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, burns and other inflammatory skin conditions. However, what attracted me was that Sea Buckthorn oil has also shown successful improvement in skin pigmentation conditions, freckles and prematurely aging skin. In fact, I found out that Sea Buckthorn berry is second only to Rose Hip and Acerola in vitamin C content.

Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil has a rich staining color & distinct smell
Besides the color, the oil has a distinct smell which isn’t very appealing.  So as a whole, it isn’t a pleasant oil to begin with.  However, don’t be misled by its appearance and smell.  I’m so thrilled that this oil has helped lightened some of my pigmented spots!  It has also helped to reduce some of the fine lines around my eyes though the extent is below my expectations.  My suspicion is that the Sea Buckthorn Seed Oil may do a better job with wrinkles and fine lines because it has a balance of Omega 3 and Omega 9.

Fairly light texture easily absorbed by the skin
Inspite of its rich color and smell, Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil has a fairly light texture.  I only need about three drops for my entire face and it is quickly absorbed into the skin and doesn’t leave a greasy film.  In fact, I was even able to apply a moisturizer on top of using this oil.  The only problem is that it does leave a yellow stain on my shirt and bed sheet if I’m not careful.

May bring out toxins contributing to an inital breakout
I’m also not sure if using this oil has contributed to a breakout because some of the websites that sell this oil indicated that it will bring out the toxins from our skin but our skin will get better with continued usage.  Perhaps that could be one of the reasons contributing to my cheek acne although they have very much subsided now.

Overall summary
I’ve seen some products like those under Aubrey Organics containing this ingredient.  However, I prefer to stick to the original oil.  I’m almost done with the bottle of my Sea Buckthorn Berry oil and am rather pleased with the results.  I will continue using it but I may switch to getting the Sea Buckthorn Seed oil provided I can find a suitable source of supply within reasonable cost.  Hopefully, it can help eradicate my annoying pigmentation in time!

Wow,seabuckthorn oil is a wonderful oil and my skin loves it. Has it helped with your pigmentation problem?

    Thanks for the link love:)

Leon: Thanks for introducing this oil to me. Initially I didn’t like it but I realized it’s been lightening some of my spots! So yeah…it’s a winner for me!

  2. Leon says:

You are welcome dear and glad that its working for you:)

  3. De says:

Been wanting to try this oil for while.

Do you apply the seabuckthorn oil on the eyes the same way as the grapeseed oil?

    Thanks!

De: I only apply to the outer corners of my eyes. I don’t dare to apply to the inner corner near to the nose bridge cos I’m proned to growing milia seeds there. And I just dab it around.

  4. ann says:

The staining is a bit of a turn off.

Would it be okay if it was just applied to the pigmented areas and not the whole face? Not sure if it would cause the complexion to become two-toned.

Ann: It should be okay to use as spot treatment cos I used it around my eyes for about a month and didn’t see two-toned. The staining is a turn off but wait till you smell this stuff!

  5. evynoppie says:

Are you still using this? And how is the improvement?
The only thing I can find in Holland right now is the Weleda Sea Buckthorn Body Oil. I am wondering if I can use this for my face.

evynoppie: Yes, I’m using it almost every night now. It’s good as in I see some lightening of my pigmentation. I wouldn’t recommend using the body oil on your face unless yours is extremely dry. Body oils are using a lot more richer and can cause your skin to breakout.

  6. pf1123 says:

I’ve got my bottle already! It arrived yestserday! However, now the product is no longer listed on Whoopeekiddies.

Do you use this after your Vit C serum but before your moisturiser?

pf: Yes, you can use it after vit C and before moisturizer. No longer listed? Whoa…I’ll write to Yee Ling and ask her about it. I’m going to finish my bottle!

  7. pf1123 says:

I used it yesterday night and gosh it really stinks!

I cannot bring myself to use it all over my face so I just put it on my spots. Ewwwwwwwwwww…..

pf1123: Haha…it is! You will get use to it…in time and maybe can extend a bit more than spot treatment.

  8. pf1123 says:

Sesame, does this sink into the skin thru the night and when you wake up, the yellow on your face is gone?

I’m trying to see if I have rubbed all of it over my beddings thru the night. hehe…

pf1123: The yellow stain is temporary and so far, I have only seen stains on my clothes cos I rub my face on it accidentally. I don’t see any on my pillow…maybe also cos I sleep with my face facing up. My face isn’t yellow in the morning but if I dampen a cotton wool and rub on, I can see the yellow stains still. Maybe you try with layering a towel or something over your pillow in case?

  9. pf1123 says:

    Thanks!

I think it should be fine. I don’t go immediately to sleep after I put it on. So, there is sometime for it to dry.

Just wondering since I didn’t find any yellow stuff on my face in the morning. I don’t use my toner in the morning. So I didn’t find out. hehe…

  10. Sea Buckthorn Oil Guru says:

I didn’t believe the wonders of Sea Buckthorn Oil until I used it myself. My skin has never looked better! It truly is a miracle worker. I hope that you get good results from your use!

Hey, yes, I love it but my supplier has run out of stock for the oil now! ?

  11. Brandy Matchett says:

has anyone ever had an allergic reaction to this, i got it on friday and woke up on sunday and my face is all broke out and swelled. I also tried some other new face cream so I am not sure what is breaking me out. Just wondering if it was common to break out in a rash.

  12. Leah says:

YES!!!! The same thing happened to me. The first night I used it was fine, but then the 2nd morning I woke up with a fine bumpy rash all over my face and had really puffy eyes.

  13. sesame says:

Oh dear…so it looks like this oil is not suited for all skin types.

  14. Farman Ali says:

I belong to an area in Pakistan which boarders with China and Afghanistan. The area is spread over 72000 sq Km of which 30% is approximaately covered with seabuck thorn. People in the grow seabuck thorn mainly for fire wood and to retain the walls of irrigation canals from erosion as seabuck thorn plants are best known for nitrogen fixers

seabuck thorn pulp and oil extracted by few people is not very popular in Pakistan. Even 90% people in the country do not about this plant

Is there any way that could help in improved processing and marketing ?

  15. Audrina Macaway says:

Hi guys can someone tell me what they think of http://www.ethicalcare.com.au as I am thinking about trying sea buckthorn oil for my persistent psoriasis.

    Help would be appreciated.

  16. Janet Jones says:

Hi Audrina I’ve assumed you are in Australia since you’ve provided a link with a .au extension.

I have found that http://www.seabuckthornoil.com.au is a great site to order from & the support is very quick at responding any enquiries.

I’ve personally bought sea buckthorn oil just because I saw Doctor Oz (whom is my ideal!!) promoting it for the skin & gums. Basically I applied some on my canker sores & gave some to my beautiful daughter who unforunately has eczema on her right cheek &…. VOILA!

After just 2 days! My canker sore was gone which was absolutely terrific!!

My daughter on the other hand still has eczema though the sea buckthorn oil seems to be moisturizing the skin very well.

Well she loves the smell of it anyway which is deffinetly a plus for me too.

I honestly think if you have done your research & are confident Sea buckthorn oil may work for you then go on & try it as it does not have any side effects.

By the way I live in the U.S & normally shop buy my products from SIBU but since they don’t have the fruit & seed oil combination I buy from seabuckthornoil.com.au

Wow I can’t believe how much I’ve written I guess I must be real bored especially since I’ve been in front of the computer for almost 3 hours now.

Well I better go out for some fresh air take care everyone!

  17. Jade says:

Unfortunately I had a severe allergic reaction to sea buckthorn oil. After just 2 nights of using it, my skin was totally inflammed – hot. red, burned, puffy and peeled. My eyes felt extremely itchy too. It’s not common for me to be allergic to natural organic products, but this is one of the few.

  18. sesame says:

That’s strange but if it doesn’t suit you, then it’s best not to use it. How about your body? Can you use the oil on your body instead?

  19. Patricia says:

It is quite strange to get a reaction from the oil as it’s so nourishing.

  20. Andrea says:

    Hello and help!
I started using Aubrey’s Sea Buckthorn Moisturizing Cream and three days later I have the itchiest, reddist, bumpiest face imaginable. As far as I know this is the first time I’ve ever been allergic to anything. Did you have any luck getting the rash to subside? I am miserable -and out $20 ? .
    Thanks all!

  21. Brandon says:

Agreeing with the allergy people. I am allergic to quite a few things so not surprised, but I woke up with my eyes so puffy they were closed and bumps went all over my face.

  22. Sesame says:

You had an allergy to this oil too? Hmmm…I need to find out more…there might be something in there that’s not suitable for some pple. The symptoms are reminding me of a nut allergy.

  23. xoamour says:

I also experienced an allergic reaction to sea buckthorn. I have sensitive skin but never with a natural ingredient yet. It was really bad. I used it a few times as I couldn’t figure out which ingredient was bothering my skin. It did the opposite of what it had been claimed to do which is unfortunate because it looked promising.

  24. Deborah says:

Hi, can you take Krill and SBT Seabuckthorn oil capsules together? I have changed my diet, I juice every morning with either kale or spinach, cucumber, apple ( mixed fruit), etc… I am concerned if I am over doing it.

    Thank you,
    Deborah

  25. Deborah says:

I also take, 1 tbsp of Kosher Grass fed beef Gelatin, from Great Lakes, in the morning and Kosher pure protein ( Collagen Hydrolysate) at night. It has decreased my appetite and losing weight and I sleep like a baby! ?

  26. Sesame says:

Not sure cos I’m not exactly familiar with supplements. Best you check with someone qualified.

  27. Tracy says:

I know this thread is extremely old, but I thought I’d comment anyway. I use the Weleda Sea Buckthorn Body Oil on my face once or twice a week and only on my dry spots and it works well and I haven’t broken out from it. I have pretty sensitive skin, too. I think I’ll try and find a diy recipe for sea buckthorn facial oil so I can use more face-friendly oils just in case. ?

  28. april says:

some had macadamia nut oil added to it because it was also a good source of omega 7s. maybe this was the culprit to the allergies?

  29. Rachel says:

I never continued use long enough to see if the breakouts would go away. I have tried multiple products with seabuckthorn and always have the same reaction: ‘blister’-like blemishes on my face, chest, and shoulders.

I would rather not use a product that gives me breakouts for any reason. I now use beef tallow for my face and neck and I’m very happy with it.

  30. R says:

    Hi
How does sea buckthorn oil smell like?

  31. Samantha says:

I’m seeing a lot of mixed reviews on this oil. I’m hoping it works for me.

  32. Marcy says:

Will the orange stain wash off in the morning or it will stay on the face even after washing?

  33. Sesame says:

It will wash off in the morning.
