DIY Beauty: mixing a new nail polish color

DIY nail polish color

I’ve got a couple of nail polishes that I hardly use because I don’t like their colors on my nails. I bought these because they looked good on the website but somehow when painted, didn’t flatter my toe nails. So they’ve been lying pitifully in the drawer, waiting for my favor.  Yesterday, as I was going through them, I decided I must well get creative and play with them.

Mix the bright red with a dark shade
Two of these are in the shades Peru-B-Ruby. It’s an intense bright red that I dislike.  Because I prefer something darker,  I decided to mix it with Lincoln Park After Dark to mellow the brightness.  What I did was to pour some of the Lincoln Park After Dark polish into the bottle of Peru-B-Ruby and add some thinner.  To get an even consistency, I then turned the bottle of Peru-B-Ruby upside down and rub it for a while using the palms of both hands.  After testing it a few times and adding a bit more Lincoln Park After Dark, I had a new shade!

Ta-da!  My new shade of nail polish.  Something darker, less intense but more wearable for me.  I guess I can make it darker if I like by pouring more Lincoln Park After Dark into the bottle but I’m quite happy with how it has turned out plus I don’t want to use up my dark nail polish.

Before and after creation of new shade
Here is how my toe nails look like.  On the right I have Peru-B-Ruby and Lincoln Park After Dark.  As you can see, the red isn’t very flattering.  And on my left is my new nail polish shade!  I like the look of it on my toe nails.    But I wonder what I should call it?

New shade at no cost
It’s really easy isn’t it?  Rather than wasting that bottle of Peru-B-Ruby, I have a new shade of nail polish I will wear.  And you can count on me to experiment with more.

You can even have fun mixing different colors to get one brand new color like blue and yellow to make green!  Just remember not to shake your bottle to mix the color.  Always use your palms to rub the bottle.

YES! Wonderful! I do that too!! If I am not having fun with the colors I just painted, I top it with a different color and it shows up a better color! ? Thanks for reminding everyone about this!

Nikki: I tried topping once but the results were not as great for me. Maybe I didn’t do it well enough…

    viva d’noir?

hmm given that it’s so easy to make colours, i cant help but wonder if salon palours use this to create similar colours that they’ve ran out. afterall, nail palours dont have very good lighting and if they manage to get a very very close match, customers usually cant tell the difference.

Raelynn: Hmmm…something to think about but I think not many does this. Well, I hope so. ?

*oh forgot to add – nice suggestion for the name!

  7. Kathleen says:

Love this!! I am going to have to give it a try. Did you just pour or use some kind of dropper? I am clumsy ?

Kathleen: I just poured slowly. Make sure you lay some tissue or paper towels in case your hands are unsteady.

  8. Michelle says:

What a great idea, I am definitley going to try that out!

    Michelle: Have fun!

  9. astrorainfall @ beauty box says:

Yes – play with your beauty products and makeup. Who says we have to stick to just what is in the bottle, eh? I sometimes spray different perfumes together because I think they would smell good or try a body lotion that isn’t supposed to “match” my perfume, but most of the time, it turns out fine.

I’m going to try this with my nail polish, too!

    Astrorainfall: Have fun mixing them!

hmmm i am confused abit. u mixed the peru-b-ruby + lincoln after dark? or the peru-b-ruby is the result of bright red+black? sorry i am really confused =/
what is the shade of the bright red?

Prettybeautiful: That bright red is Peru-B-Ruby. I guess you’re confused cos you’re seeing 2 bottles of Peru-B-Ruby. I have two of them and I use both in the pictures to show the contrast after mixing. Actually in the 2nd pic, I have already added a bit of the Lincoln Park After Dark into the Peru-B-Ruby and that’s why the shade isn’t so red.

  11. prettybeautiful says:

ooooh! now i see! no wonder i was thinking why there are only 2 names but 3 colors in the post :p sorry ? hope i am not only the dumbo here…oops. nice tip! very brilliant indeed.

Prettybeautiful: No lah, not dumbo. You probably were not expecting that I had 2 Peru-B-Ruby and hence the confusion arose.

nice tips!! i had never thought of doing it… ?

    Akiki: ?

  13. Christie says:

    Ohh, thanks!
I’ve always wondered if you could just mix colors, so thanks for showing us how!
I do have a question, though: what was the “thinner” you used and is it necessary, or is that just something you did?

thanks again! love the new color; i hate how bright reds can be deceivingly unflattering:)

Christie: The “thinner” is to dilute the nail polish because sometimes after awhile, the colors sort of harden or thicken a little. I used the one from Mavala but you can find others like from Sally Hansen too. If your nail polish is new and very diluted already, then there is no need to add the thinner.

  14. Anne says:

I used to take colors and mix them drop by drop in small pieces of aluminum foil. I just let the polish fall from the brush and mixed other colors in a small pool of color. Sometimes it worked, sometimes, it didn’t. I just found nail glazes that you put over base colors and regular nail polish that not only enhance colors but create new ones. You can thin out all of the polish you want but you’re never going to find anything better than the glazes made by Wet Paint Nail Glaze. And no, I don’t work for them. I’m just in love with this stuff! I saw a commercial on tv and I was hooked! I bought my kit at
http://www.wetpaintshop.com. If you’re a nail polish lover, you’re going to love what they sell.

Anne: Oh that’s interesting. I’ve used glazes but they brought a shine and enhanced colors but never created new ones. I’ll keep a look out for this one you mentioned. Thanks!

  15. Anne says:

Hi Anne! I saw your comment and had to answer. The glazes in the Wet Paint kit are colored glazes like red, yellow and even black. They add a lot of shine but they add a gorgeous layer of color. They’re so cool and I’m sure you’re going to love them. I haven’t seen the kits in stores yet so you’ll probably have to go to their web site like I did. (By the way, love your name!)

  16. Amy says:

thanks for this great idea to create new nail polish color. Think I’ll start checking my bottles of old nail polish to see what new color I could get out of them ?

  17. sesame says:

Hope you’ll have fun using them.

  18. Anne says:

I use the Wet Paint Nail Glaze System instead of mixing regular nail polish to create new colors. I hate to say it but sometimes polish from different companies doesn’t always mix well. The Wet Paint glazes are different. They’re made to go over base colors so you can use the polishes you already have. I’ve had a fun trying out new colors using the Wet Paint line. Their glazes are thinner than a regular polish and have a lot of pigment color in them but when you put them over your polish, you get a new color. You don’t have to mix polish anymore. I had on a pink and put the red glaze over it and ended up with a lovely shade. I wore this to work. When I went out later that night with friends for dinner, I added another coat of the red glaze which intensified the color I had on already. It was a gorgeous red, too! Sesame, I hope you try it out too someday as its really different and will probably change the way we use nail polish. And as I said before, I don’t even bother mixing colors anymore. I just use the colored glazes and make new colors. Its so much fun and everyone always notices my nails now. Thanks for all your tips! I love your website!

  19. sesame says:

Thanks Anne for sharing the info. The glaze sounds like fun. I will check it out and see if we have it over here.
