Japanese matt powder for soft hair styling

Japanese Matt Hair Powder

My hairstylist was raving about this new Matt Powder from Japan and how it was quickly snapped up at his salon and the whole of Singapore when it was introduced into the market. And due to the hot demand, the price has risen from S$12 to S$15 for the second shipment.

Anyway, this is supposed to work like a hair styling gel, except that it’ll create a soft matt style.  Just sprinkle a small amount of powder into your palms and rub together. Rake through dry hair and lift into style for a matt finish and natural touch.

Inhaling the powder during application
I tried the powder and found that unlike the dry shampoo I’m always using, this powder is very fine and I don’t need to use a lot of it. It feels a tad sticky when I rubbed them with my fingers but when applied, my hair didn’t feel sticky and hard like conventional gel. Although my hairstylist told me this Matt Powder can prevent hair from getting greasy quickly, I didn’t really see a noticeable difference. I think my dry shampoo does a better job. However, it does help me in terms of styling my hair better; just that because it’s so fine, I inevitably inhale some of the powder and I don’t like the idea at all.  To get round the problem, I have to cover my nose with a towel when I use this so it’s very inconvenient!

Japanese Matt Powder
Doesn’t keep my hair grease free
While this product does sound convenient and is inexpensive, I personally don’t like it very much due to the reasons I’ve stated. It doesn’t really do that much for me and my hair still remains greasy. And it is doesn’t make sense to use this and the dry shampoo together. Granted, it does give my hair some style but I find the soft effect very subtle, which I can do without.  In addition, there is no English listing of the ingredients but I was told they are mostly chemical so it’s not a good idea to sprinkle the powder directly on the scalp.

My hairstylist thinks conventional hair gel will be replaced by such product. Well, I don’t know.  I don’t use hair gel or styling products so I have no idea.  Has anyone tried this product or something similar?

How’s the texture for dry shampoo? Does it dissolve easily? I fear it might look like dandruff if I don’t apply correctly T.T

  2. BlovetBeauty says:

i totally agree with atelier gal.. In japan the weather is much drier and I can see them using this pretty easily because of the low humidity. But in spore, using a powder to style the hair sounds a little strange.. dun think I’ll get used to it..

I hate having things in my hair. Scared that they caused acne for me.

My Klorane dry shampoo feels like normal talcum powder but drier. It is quite good in keeping my hair grease free. I always pour the powder on my palm and then I comb through my hair. Don’t spray on your hair and they’ll end up on your scalp and yes, perhaps cause dandruff or other problems.

  5. sesame says:

I don’t know…I heard that in Japan, they like the natural look but this one is also popular here amongst the hairstylist now. Apparently, they prefer this than their usual styling gel.

  6. sesame says:

Yes, some products will especially if your hair keeps getting into your face…

  7. Sparklewolfie says:

all chemical ingredients that are not ok to put directly on your scalp, being inhaled? ? That does not sound like a very good idea to me…

The product I think sounds like a nice idea, so styled hair will not look hard and helmet-y, but more natural, but the product makes me worry a little bit XD I would not use this – I would stick with hairspray!

  8. sesame says:

If you don’t use a lot, it isn’t too bad. If I’m not wrong, we do inhale some of the hairspray too unless we hold our breaths!

I tried this powder thing when I went to style my hair at the salon recently. The hairstylist used some on my fringe area and said that when using the powder, best to get it right at the first style becos it doesn’t hold if you comb through it too much.

Anyway, cos he also used hair spray on me so I can’t differentiate the effect of the powder.

  10. sesame says:

My hairstylist suggested that I use it to replace my dry shampoo which is to keep my hair from grease but I find it doesn’t cut it. Okay for soft styling though…and yes, you’re right! Combing will get rid of the powder.

I used this product for a couple of days.. and after i washed my hair for several day, my hair still feel very sticky… how do you all get rid of that???help!

  12. sesame says:

Sticky? Did you use a lot of it? Some ways to get rid of waxy buildup:

After shampooing, rinse your hair with either vinegar or lemon juice. This will strip the waxy build-up off and make your hair shine.

Or using your regular shampoo, pour your usual amount of shampoo into your hand, and add a tablespoon of baking soda. The baking soda will help remove the buildup from your hair, making your hair squeaky clean.

  13. Claypotrice says:

Really? I shall try it.. My hairstylist offered to wash my hair for me. But still din help much:(

  14. claire_cemolina says:

    That looks quiet interesting!
but i’m not so sure if i like matt….it might not look that healthy?

  15. sesame says:

It doesn’t make the hair look too matt but it helps control the oil somewhat.

  16. Melon says:

Hi, may I know where can i get this powder? Thank you ?

  17. Se7enlights says:

I am using this Matt Powder and found it to be workable. I only have one concern is if I leave it overnight without washing my hairs, will it cause any damage. According to my hairstylist, he said it is make from sea salt but add some chemicals… so do not know whether it is harmful to health or to my scalp.

    Please kindly help.
    Thanks.
