How soon do you replenish your skincare items?

Recently, several readers who purchased skin care products based on some of my reviews have been sending me emails asking me the same questions. How long do you take to finish the product? Why do I use up the lotion so quickly? How can I stretch the usage of the product a little longer? Well, the products in question are costly and hence, these readers are hoping that they won’t have to replenish them so quickly. On the other hand, a number of you have also shared through comments left that you take a very long time to finish your creams and lotions. I have also heard that some customers who use the same products as me can actually stretch the usage of the same item by another two or even three months! How is that possible?

How hydrated is your skin?
I’ve since learnt that it may have something to do with different skin types or skin conditions. Those with drier skin may find themselves having to apply more than the stipulated amount indicated and hence, find themselves using up their products very quickly. On the other hand, if your skin type is not dry and is already well hydrated, chances are, you may find that you won’t have to apply that much of your product and yet, you’ll feel that a small amount is sufficient for your skin to absorb. In fact, I’ve come across products that seem to last longer after using them for awhile; maybe the first bottle lasted me for a month but the second bottle lasted me for two months. That’s actually quite good because it means the hydration level of my skin has improved over time! So that’s something to check if you’re using a product that promises to hydrate your skin – has your skin’s absorption level of that said product improved after using the product for awhile? Maybe you don’t have to apply that much of that product anymore and yet, your skin still feels as hydrated?

How to stretch usage of your creams?
In addition, it’s not a good idea to apply more of a product just because you want to gain more benefits from using it. It’s best to stick to the amount stated on the instructions. Using more not only means having to repurchase quickly, it may also means clogged pores and unwanted breakouts if you’re not careful. Over time, you may be able to stretch the product longer by cutting the dosage by half the amount indicated on the instructions. And with most creams, you won’t have to use so much of it if you warm the cream using your fingers and then pat into your face. I’ve also tried adding a little bit of face mist into my creams to improve the viscosity. However, that’s actually diluting the cream so it’s not the best idea if your product contains a lot of active ingredients like vitamin C for example.

Which group do you belong to?
So which group do you belong to? Do you find that you use up your products rather quickly and have to replenish them too soon? Or do you find that you take a really long time to buy the second bottle and are wondering if you’re using enough of the product? Do you also have any tips to share on how to stretch the usage of skin care items?

Hi, just wondering, since I follow your twitter.

Is there a reason why your twitter links to a FB link instead of directly linking to your latest posts? Wouldn’t it better to link directly to your posts? (not trying to be rude pls don’t take offense)

And to stay on topic, I am not so diligent in using skin care products every day, (bad me) but I don’t slap so much, I tend to dab on small amts bit by bit so I don’t “overdose”.

I am now using Suki Pure skin care range,
as u know most of their products comes in small bottles (tose 15ml-30ml wans) and its quite easy to use them up in a months time.

Bcos they r state to b very concentrated, a little actually goes a long way.

But sometimes I will put too much esp the serum tat is targeted on my acne, den I will have tis assurance n urge of applyin n applying.. hoping de zits will disappear faster.. haha..

And I estimate that I have to spend around $300 every month to replenish stocks.. *broke*

I tend to use very slowly. Each toner, 50ml jar/tube of cream, 15ml eye cream (never finish a tube/jar) last 1 year or more.

I always squeeze or take out a pea size/10ct coin size of product and spread all over the face.

My friends who tend to use up things fast takes a small amount and dab and another bit and dab. I think that wastes product becoz the tendency is overlap application.

Anyway, excess product that doesn’t get absorbed will be wasted on the skin and leads to breakouts. So, perhaps girls who use products too fast can try the 10ct coin method to spread over a whole face. Don’t keep going back to the jar/tube for seconds or thirds.

It really depends for me. If I like the product or scent, I may just end up applying a bit more. Also, I double-up gel/cream texture products as a mask or massage cream so I tend to finish it up pretty fast but in this case, I do not need to purchase so many additional products to use.

I think using just enough amount of product will do :)and I don’t stick to one product, like I do have several products for my acne so I can alternate them whenever I feel the need to use a product that fits on my skin condition.

i find that i take ages to finish up products and i find if i use the same product for too long, it stops being so effective and i go out and buy something else. ive found all kinds of uses for half-used products e.g i read in a japanese model’s photobook that she uses her half-used lotions/toners as bath essences and i find it works great. plus old moisturisers become foot creams, etc etc

but i do think a large part of it has to do with me just getting bored… ?

Oh dear…I didn’t know the twitter links to my FB page! I have my FB linked to my twitter and when there’s an update, it is on Twitter too. I had expected that it publishes the same info and the link would be to the actual page. I’ll try to get rid of the link by end of this week…thanks for telling me!

  8. sesame says:

    $300 a month just replenishing? That’s quite a pinch!

  9. sesame says:

I’m with you – one squeeze or one pump is sufficient.

  10. sesame says:

Doubling up products is a good idea. At least you know you’re using products that is already working well for your skin.

  11. sesame says:

I like the idea of alternating. I sometimes alternate expensive products with cheaper ones as a way to stretch the former.

  12. sesame says:

You raised a good point that products can lose their efficacy when they’re used for too long. Definitely something to consider.

I do get bored with products after awhile too…

  13. pf1123 says:

Oh, I thought you did that on purpose. ?

For creams and oils, yes, those can last quite a while. I’m considering diluting my rose hip oil with olive oil ‘cos it’s pretty oily and takes a long time to absorb since my skin is combo(oily/dry).

For foot creams, definitely use a lot as my feet are super dry. For this cream from Human Nature, I used way too much and half of the 50g pot is gone within a few days. Plus points are it heals very fast and the effects don’t go away just ‘cos I forget to apply for a day. Downside is that it can only be obtained through a seller and she’s currently not in Singapore. Oops darn copy and paste!

  16. Aicha says:

I have oily skin so I have a tendency to use a my moisturizers and creams sparingly, but I use up my toner faster!

I’m currently using Skinfood Peach Sake Toner, Serum and Emulsion. I found that though I apply the three simultaneously, I use up the toner more and less on the cream and emulsion which are highly moisturizing.

So yes it’s true it really depends!

  17. sesame says:

I linked my FB to my twitter on purpose though cos I don’t have to update both. But I never clicked on my twitter links to check. ?

  18. sesame says:

When I was using rose hip oil, I would spritz facial mist on my face before applying. I found that it was not so oily that way.

  19. sesame says:

I’m the opposite of you; toner is the one that I use rather slowly.

  20. Rennie says:

Hm. I have oily combination skin so for me replenishing my skincare products especially moisturizers take quite a while. I guess I’m lucky. Though having oily skin makes me so acne-proned. -___-

  21. sesame says:

On the other hand, when you have oily skin, you have lesser wrinkles.

  22. Kate says:

    Hi, that’s a good suggestion. ?
