Share: do you wipe off lipstick before you eat?

Do you use a lipstick daily? I don’t. But I wear it at least 4 – 5 days in a week. More often than not, I apply one in the morning, head out to work and re-apply after lunch. That’s pretty much a norm with most ladies isn’t it? And so the question today is, do you wipe off your lipstick, lipgloss or lipbalm before you eat or drink anything?

While I do not wipe off my lipstick, lipgloss or lipbalm prior to drinking, I might wipe my mouth before eating…sometimes. It’s not a very conscious effort and neither do I do it proactively – I just do it if I feel like it. For the most part, I’ll just eat with my lipstick on.

I know there’s been a lot of discussion in terms of unsafe ingredients in lipsticks, or that we’re ingesting a tons of lipstick in a year and so it’s best to choose naturally formulated ones. However, I am not too concerned because I don’t think I’m consuming tons of lipsticks. LOL. Plus, I hardly wear red lipsticks where evidence of lead are the highest. Even then, it appears that many red lipsticks are safe today because color additives are no longer made from coal tars that contain high amounts of lead.

Lipsticks are safe. Most color additives are no longer made from coal tars that contain high amounts of lead. Almost all pigments now come from petroleum, and the FDA certifies each batch. “You’ll find far more lead and mercury in the foods you eat than the lipstick you wear,” says Ni’Kita Wilson, a cosmetics chemist at Cosmetech Labs in Fairfield, New Jersey. So over to you. Do you have a habit of wiping off your lipstick prior to eating or drinking? And why do you do it? Is it out of a health concern or is it out of a habit?

I wipe AFTER eating ? I don’t usually reapply either unless I’ve got to go somewhere that needs my face on.

  2. sesame says:

Oh yes, I do that too, wipe off after eating but more like wiping off the oil stains and all but not thinking about the lipstick. ?

You don’t reapply? My colleagues and I always bunch up in the toilet after lunch busy reapplying.

  3. Jung says:

Instead of lipstick, I use colored lip balm, and it usually goes off while eating. I always wonder abt the long term side effects too. Recently, my beautician has been trying to get me to tattoo my lips as a safety measure. You think tattooing is a good alternative?

  4. Soos says:

I only wipe my mouth afterwards, and I do reapply lipstick. It’s more because of dry lips than anything else. I don’t worry about it at all.

  5. Soos says:

May I just say 2 things about tattoing? 1) Because there are more nerve endings on your face, this tattoo will hurt more than say, your arm. 2) Tattoos fade. I overheard a coworker say she had her brow and liner tattoos redone every 2 to 2-1/2 years. If you don’t, the red pigment fades fastest, and you’re left with blue eyebrows, etc.

  6. sesame says:

I’m using something like what you described – a colored lipbalm and am loving it! As for tatoo, I have no idea but you might want to read what Soos wrote. Personally, I am against tatooing cos I imagine it might look weird after awhile or if you don’t like the color? But perhaps like eyebrow embroidery, you must always go for touch ups.

  7. sesame says:

I reapply more for giving some color…otherwise I’m usually good with lipbalms. Anyway, sometimes I yak too much, I get that yucky white film on my lips.

  8. sesame says:

Actually I’m quite oppose to tattooing…just think it’s best to leave our skin naturally. At least with makeup, you can wash off and reapply when you don’t like the color or effect. Tatooing is at least semi permanent.

interesting question. i only do if i’m wearing a lipgloss coz having them stuck to my cup is yuck! i wear sheer lipsticks/tinted lipbalms most of the time so i don’t bother coz they wear off so fast anyway

    My lipstick tend 2 fade 0ff by lunchtime s0 there is really n0 need 4 me 2 wipe them 0ff. I als0 d0nt have the habit 0f reapplying them. H0wever, i d0 take precauti0n 2 prevent fr0m kn0wingly digesting the lipstick by using straws when i drink n breaking up f00d like bread 0r biscuits int0 bite sizes b4 i swall0w s0 they d0 n0t c0me int0 c0ntact with my lips. In fact, i g0 as far as buying th0se gat0rade type 0f b0ttles where i just have 2 0pen my m0uth wide, squeeze the water 0ut n tah dah..l0l. N0t sure if u kn0w what i meant ?

I’m with you that I don’t wipe it off first, but that’s because I find that taking off lipstick without makeup remover tends to be slightly hard and it ends up leaving my lips really “stretched”-like and obviously dry. I do wipe it off and clean my lips with water afterward though, so when I reapply, it doesn’t make the gross white ring of saliva appear ?

  12. SimplyStephy says:

Very interesting question! I usually go for a lipstain so that I can eat and drink without any problems. The best part is no touching up afterwards! I seriously need to do a blogpost about my favorite lipstains because I think everyone should try them ?

  13. Issa says:

oh no, i don’t wipe off my lipstick before eating! it is probably gone by the time i have to eat….

  14. L. says:

That’s a very interesting question because I never paid attention to it until I read your post. I guess I’m doing it AFTER eating. But then I’m mostly wearing lip balm or lip gloss and they tend to fade away very easily on their own.

  15. N. says:

No, but I should. It really bothers me to eat or drink when I have a lip product on.

  16. Carrie says:

Interesting post and I must say I am relieved to know lipsticks are now safer than previously considered. I hardly ever wear lipstick/colour/gloss as I was worried about all the chemicals I ingest during eating and drinking. Another reason is that seeing stains on the cup is a bit yucky for me, and it’s a hassle for me as I must drink at about 6-7 cups of tea/water during office hour. But if I do wear lipstick/colour/gloss I definitely wipe it off before eating coz I find the taste funny and doesn’t go well with my food ? But now since your research suggests it is safer to wear them now, I might starting to wear more of it from now on!! ?

  17. sesame says:

Now that you mentioned, I dislike seeing my lipstick marks on the cup. I feel quite self conscious about it.

  18. sesame says:

You’re very careful about ingesting your lipstick! ? I know those bottles you mentioned too.

  19. sesame says:

You get that white stuff on your lips too? I have to wash them off too before reapplying or it’s too gross as it becomes a pink yuck film. ?

  20. sesame says:

Lipstains? Sounds really interesting. I’ll go look up what they are for I’ve definitely never used them.

  21. sesame says:

Yeah, it’s true for me too…most of it are usually gone by then.

  22. sesame says:

Mine do too but I wonder if they fade away or if we lick them and ingest them along the way…

  23. sesame says:

But I guess you’re usually unconscious about it unless you can ‘feel’ the product on your lips…

  24. sesame says:

Haha…so it’s good news for you. ? It’s nice to have some color on the lips but I dislike seeing the marks on the cup too…just that it’s strange to wipe off just before drinking when you’re drinking with someone else.

  25. pf1123 says:

I have a full face of makeup except lipstick. Haha…my lipstick cannot stand after breakfast.

  26. sesame says:

Hey, are you back? Got loots? ?
