Hey lady…is your handbag to go light or heavy?

Here are some interesting statistics I found about handbags. Apparently, the average British woman’s handbag weighs 1.8kg while the average Australian woman’s handbag weighs 3.4kg. The average Australian woman also owns more handbags than the British woman. Now I wonder what’s the figure for the Singapore woman like? I’m seeing quite a lot of huge bags in the likes of Longchamp and I also see a lot of women carrying two bags!

I think my bag weighs quite a bit because I’ve got like tons of stuff in there – an umbrella, a water bottle, a pencil case with stationery galore and a few notebooks, not to mention a handful of lippies and lip balms (I don’t know why I carry them all), a hand sanitizer, a handcream, glasses, handphone, a purse, and my keys. Some days I have my camera too. Interestingly, I usually don’t have sweets or food items in there.

So would you say your day-to-day handbag is heavy? If so, what exactly is contributing to the weight? By the way, just in case you don’t already know, it’s not a good idea to carry a big and heavy bag as that’ll add strain to your shoulders. Okay that I know but I just can’t help not carrying all my stuff with me. (-_-)

i’ve downsized my handbags to small satchel sizes in the last two years and unless i need to carry files, documents or a laptop, i’m reluctant to go any bigger–i figured the bigger my bag, the more unnecessary stuff i dump in it. i used to have lots of gadgets with me for work, but now with the iPhone, i feel like i don’t need anything else. and if i ever have to lug a laptop around, i’ll probably buy myself the iPad. i’m also considering downsizing my already-small wallet to a key holder with essential IDs/credit card…coz actually, i don’t use all those discount cards all that much and i only take them out when i do plan some purchases. the bulkiest items i have is probably the umbrella (sg weather…or i wouldn’t bother) and a book if i’m reading (i can’t do e-books unless they’re novellas or short stories)

downsizing is the way to go

My bag is really heavy, and I know it’s bad for the shoulders and spine. The main culprit is that umbrella, because when I don’t bring an umbrella, I know that I’ve forgotten it as the weight is significantly lighter.

The next culprit is my wallet. I have no idea why it’s heavy.

I try to leave home with an empty water bottle and return with a half-full one. I fill my water at work.

Embarrassing? Why? I do a cleanup once in awhile. ?

  6. Sesame says:

Yes, that’s the problem with bigger bags…we tend to throw everything in!

  7. Sesame says:

Yeah, that’s a good tip! To carry a smaller bag would minimize the problems associated with bigger ones. I need to consider that in my next bag purchase. I think having a bag organizer is not a good idea sometimes. Good for big bag but we tend to organize too many things in there too!

Lots of money? Haha…that’s a good thing! I think maybe the cards and the coins are weighing down your wallet.

As for water bottle, it’s almost hilarious but I do lug a 1.5 litre bottle full of water to work these days. I use a different carry on for that.

When I was at school I would walk/to from school with heavy books and such in a shoulder bag to the point where I now lean a little to the left (just a tiny bit). So I don’t need to worry about my bag being too heavy- my posture is long ruined. XD As it is I carry a lot round with me- but its mostly my books for uni, or my laptop, and strangely my wallet that take up the most weight. My water bottle can be heavy too. I do love big bags. I don’t tend to pack them up too much though- as I think the best thing about a big bag is that you can shove other things into it whenever neccesary! I like carrying just one bag, instead of many.

bag organizers, i realize, add to the weight and bulk–even on their own

  11. Swati says:

even I do clean up but somehow I don’t like people peeping into my bag and then asking me why do you have this and that…many do that!!!

It’s usually the water bottle and umbrella that makes the bag extremely heavy.

I know what you mean! Big bags can affect posture and that’s the trouble with the kids today…they have so much stuff to bring to school! I get a special backpack for my son, which is suppose to help support his back. Maybe that helps.

  14. Sesame says:

Yes! It keeps things organize but because of that, there is a tendency to want to get a bigger bag to accommodate it too.

  15. Sesame says:

Oh…that’s like not very nice. I think peeping into someone’s bag is like invading into her privacy too.

  16. Sesame says:

True…even when the lightest umbrella is selected, it still adds to the weight. For water bottle, I tend to hold it in my hand if I can.

  17. JackieA says:

My bag is pretty heavy too with all sorts of little bits and bobs! I have learnt to go through it every once in a while and clean up and over the years I have gotten better at carrying less. My husband will pick up my bag every so often and tell me “It’s a little heavy for your lovely shoulders babe…..time to go thought it or your back will act up again!” I appreciate the reminder!

  18. Sesame says:

Oh what a lovely husband! It’s great to have someone to remind you on and off…mine complains about my big bag but it sounds more like a criticism to me. ?
