DIY Beauty: 5-steps to the perfect at home facial

There was a time I used to go for facials frequently and it was even as often as weekly at one stage. However, due to the lack of time, I hardly go for facials these days. However, I don’t see my skin condition looking any worse because I do take quite good care of it at home. I have a routine that is quite similar to what you see in the Infographics below, except that I don’t steam my face. I just wash my face with warm water.

So for those of you who dislike facials for some reason and I know a few of you do because you told me, here’s a DIY facial you can do right in the comfort of your home. You can use a DIY face scrub containing baking soda with honey and for the mask, I would recommend using yogurt with oat flour. Steaming is not something I would recommend because the more you steam, the more your pores are going to show. But if you do this like once a month, then it’s not a big issue. Instead of steaming, just do this facial after you have taken a hot shower, which can itself be quite steamy. You might also want to consider adding a facial massage during your facial wash or while you’re moisturizing – like the Tanaka facial massage technique.

So do you ladies like going for facial or do you prefer to indulge in some sort of a home facial? I prefer the latter because it saves me a lot of time plus I don’t need to be conscious of messy hair after a home facial.

    Hi Sesame,
i’m in the same boat. I used to go facial quite regularly. But all that changed, when I got the Clarisonic Mia. Using that once every two weeks, followed by firming mask and hydrating mask, I’ve stopped spending money on expensive spa facials. ? I call it my pampering time when I do my facials at home. Recently I bought an eye mask from Watson’s. Can’t wait to try that on. Have a great weekend!

I prefer to go for facial, because there is the facial massage that is soothing and sleep-inducing, which I can’t do myself.

I used to like facials for the extraction cos I detest my blackheads, but I don’t think I will be continuing after I finish my current package ends because it seems that my nose cannot take any squeezing anymore. The top layer starts drying up and peeling while oil production does not cease. Ultimate gross and I can’t put makeup cos of it. Thanks for this article, timely for me.

    Hi Sesame,

Just wondering if you have tried Antipodes Apostle Skin Brightening & Tone Correcting Serum? If have, did it work? ?

Yeah, that definitely saves lots of moolah and time. ?

  11. Sesame says:

Oh the Clarisonic Mia seems like a “face saver” for many…haha. Glad it works well for you! I do enjoy facials once in a while but just dislike how my hair looks after the session.

  12. Sesame says:

It’s true…I enjoy it too but just can’t afford the time. The one I used to go was very good but I’ve to spend like 2 – 3 hours there each time which is quite crazy for me!

  13. Sesame says:

Well, time to pamper yourself. ?

  14. Sesame says:

If you do this at home, you can cut down the sessions of facials. Give it a try…

  15. Sesame says:

I was a poor student once too and I never even know how to do this then. ?

  16. Sesame says:

You can…just make sure you get the cosmetic grade ones. Use it like a moisturizer…apply 2 to 3 drops to your palm, rub both hands together and then pat on your face. Ideally, have your face slightly damp.

  17. Sesame says:

Hi Zinat, no I haven’t got to try that brand. Did you try searching makeupalley to see if you can read any reviews on the product?

  18. Sesame says:

I have the same experience with peeling! And yes, like you, the whiteheads and blackheads never cease to return.

Thank you! Come back often for my almost daily updates. ?

  21. Liza says:

I do this at the gym once a week .. cos they have a steam room. So I take a shower, wash my face and hair, slather on hair conditioner, go into the steam room for 5-10 mins, take another shower to get rid of all the hair conditioner and then a body shower , put moisturizing mask whilst drying my hair…. does that sounds as cumbersome??

  22. Sesame says:

I’m impressed that you do all that in the gym! Not cumbersome but I admire your routine and I think it’s a great one cos you’re certainly getting quite a lot achieved through this weekly routine.

  23. Zinat says:

  29. Linh says:

Many sites which i have ever seen told that we should get steam before exfoliating because if we do contrarily, the heat can cause skin rash n’ skin will be softer and thinner than usual.

  30. Angie says:

My skin got burned from using a lotion brand that- i didn’t know was containing hydrogen peroxide… Maybe there was too much of that substance on that lotion… What should i do? I’m so afraid to try other solutions. I want natural ways to recover. It was my first time to use beauty product and what happened to me was really disappointing.
