Isvara Organics Coconut Sunscreen with SPF30

Isvara Organics Coconut Sunscreen

So this was the other sunscreen I got from iHerb—Isvara Organics Coconut Sunscreen with SPF30. I’m not familiar with this brand but the idea of slathering coconut oil with zinc oxide appealed to me. It’s not expensive at US$12+ and I thought I can alternate this with the DeVita Solar Body Block SPF30+ for my arms. Yes, this product can be used on my face too but nah, I bought it purely as a sunscreen for my body.

About the brand
I’m not familiar with Isvara Organics. It’s in the natural category and the only thing organic about the brand is that some of their product ingredients are stated as organic. The products are handcrafted in small batches and also made without unnecessary chemical additives. Other than skin care, Isvara Organics also comes with hair care products but today, my focus is on their Coconut Sunscreen with SPF30.

Isvara Coconut Sunscreen Ingredients

About the ingredients

Ingredients: Zinc Oxide
Ingredients: Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Aloe Oil, Zinc Oxide, Organic Shea Butter, Illip Butter, Red Raspberry Seed Oil, Stearic Acid, Bees Wax, Vegetable Wax, Vitamin C, Organic Lecithin, Phenorethanol.

ingredients
While I like the coconut oil and red raspberry seed oil in the formula because they contain sun protection properties, there are a few things that made me uncomfortable about the ingredient list and this is why I refuse to use this on my face. First, I have no idea about the amount of zinc oxide used in this formula and hence, am not sure if I can get sufficient coverage. The other is beewax which I’m not keen to use on my face. Finally, can someone tell me what in the world is ‘Phenorethanol’? Is this a new ingredient or is it a typo? Chould it be ‘Phenylethanol’ or ‘Phenoxyethanol’ instead?

About the texture & scent
Anyway, I don’t think too many people will be too swooned by this product. First off, it’s oily. Granted, the oil sinks in pretty quickly into my skin and feels fine thereafter, but for people who are paranoid about using oil, my advice is to steer clear. Next, you need to shake the bottle quite hard to ensure the ingredients are better mixed but as you can see from the picture, it doesn’t quite turn out so. But once applied, you don’t see the white particles from the zinc oxide and neither does this leave a whitecast on my skin. By virtue of the name, this sunscreen has a noticeable coconut scent, which I find to be pleasant.

About the price & availability
I bought this Isvara Organics Coconut Sunscreen out of curiosity and will most probably finish the bottle. However, I won’t be repurchasing. It’s quite affordable at US$12+ from iHerb but I’m not too impressed with it. Maybe it’ll work better for those with extremely dry skin.

That looks a little too oily for me. I will take your advice and steer clear.

  2. Sandra says:

Sounds interesting. I will definitely check out. I adore coconut smell! Regarding this mysterious ingredient, you could send an email to the company, or just ask them on their facebook page. I do not know. Never heard of it. I hope it is not a typo, because it would be very unprofessional. No idea. Anyway, thanks for the review!!! <3

This looks really healthy. Definitely my next purchase for the summer season. I will be well prepared this time (and hopefully don’t get burned again).

  4. Eco Beauty says:

Err, it looks like baby puke on the last photo, haha. I got excited when I saw the email feed of this post because I read ‘coconut oil’ and ‘sunscreen’, two of my most favorite words now. If I didn’t read your review and I spotted this on herb, I might have bought this product for the novelty factor.

Hi Sesame..May I ask for a favour? What do you think of the ingredients of Neutrogena Pure Mild Ultra Sheer Sunblock? It is the sunblock I’m currently using, and it is said to be natural? Thanksss… ?

  7. Agnes says:

I like how coconut smells, except when it is around me all day. I once tried graham’s sunscreen; coconut smell and zinc. At first it was pleasant, but after three days I couldn’t stand the smell anymore.

It’s a bit of a hassle to ask but I might try.

  9. Sesame says:

Not sure if this is good enough to prevent burning.

  10. Sesame says:

Baby puke…yeah, looks a bit like that now that you’ve mentioned it. ?

    Happy Lunar New Year!

  11. Sesame says:

It’s a chemical sunscreen…nothing natural I’m afraid. But it should provide some level of protection because usually they have a few sun protection ingredients.

  12. Sesame says:

Too overwhelming I guess. This one is okay as in it’s not a heavy scent.

  13. Sesame says:

It is quite oily on contact…although the oil does sink in after some time.

  14. allison says:

thanks for sharing this review. The price seems fair but by looking at the texture, I’m not whether that is something I would be using… even after shaking it doesn’t look well-mixed with particles all over the place.

Yeah…not ideal but some of the reviewers seem to like it quite a lot.

  16. Emma says:

I also like the smell of coconut, but maybe it would be a bit much for city wear…sounds great for that holiday in the sun, though…no harm in a girl dreaming!

I would to order from iherb but really worried about international shipping. There are so many complains about Iherb. I’m from Vietnam. I don’t know that iherb will ship directly to my home or not…I’m worried about lost goods and no refund from iherb it seems like they work irresponsible. Can you please give me some experience to order from Iherb? Thanks

  19. Sesame Chew says:

iHerb offers good service. Any slip up in shipping is due to the delivery company or the local post office. I have no problems ordering from them monthly now. So you have to find out if the delivery service in Vietnam is reliable. From what I understand, many said iHerb will offer replacement if the goods are lost however, I haven’t experienced that so can’t confirm.

I suppose it’s easy to be judgmental about a new product when you compare it to something you have used before. But after smart investigation to dig deeper into the origin of a product and how it came to be,
one always learns something about why a manufacturer arrives at what they’ve produced.

Lest we be so quick to judge, react, make false accusations and flippant remarks about how something looks, always seek the truth and ignore what others have to say unless they can substantiate their claim with facts. Their opinions may be based on social conditioning which is the mainstream’s narrower view. Once you’ve read the history on anything, the realization of why something exists takes precedence and you’ve just expanded your view to a deeper, broader and higher form of thinking.

As with this particular product, Elizabeth Avillar developed this after becoming ill with all the toxins she used while working at various salons in California . . . read on, if you want to know more and expand your knowledge.

  21. Sesame says:

Whatever the history or reason the product was made, every consumer has a right to their opinion about how they feel about it. Why should consumers feel oblige to say only good things about a product just because of the brand philosophy or background? No product in the market in any industry can claim to be so good and only garner positive review. All brands should respect that consumers have their preferences and their rights to say how they feel about a product.

If a product can’t even impress the consumer, why should a consumer go dig any deeper into the origin of a brand? The product—texture, feel, look—all have to add up to support whatever philosophy a brand may have. Please, if a brand is to make money out of consumers, then it has to be able to answer to consumers’ preferences and not expect consumers to adjust expectations based on its origins, philosophy or background—no matter how noble all those may sound.

What I wrote was definitely not flippant, nor have I made false accusations or was it based on any social conditioning. The picture of how the look looks when poured form the bottle speaks for itself–that substantiates my claims. So how is an honest review a narrow view? Would you then say that a positive review is a broad view?

You don’t happen to work for the company do you?

I am looking for natural, hazard free, safe sunscreen protection with SPF at least 30 on my face which also can moisturize my dry wrinkle face and hand skin. Is this product suitable for me? I like shiny look (coz my face always looks dull, dry and lifeless). Is the chemical ingredient something like phenorethanol (spell on the bottle), phenylethanol (on the iherb website description) safe to use? Why there is spelling inconsistency?

  23. Hong Yee Min says:

What type of sunscreen protection with spf at least 30 will you recommend me to use. By the way, I like coconut smell very much. I have no problem with the smell.
