Make every day a good hair day…even when it is not

Make Every Day A Good Hair-Day
I’m facing a bit of a hairy conundrum at the moment: I don’t know who to go for my next haircut. You see, I broke off a long-term relationship with my hairstylist some 48 weeks ago. I’d anticipated this day but let’s just say it happened prematurely. The decision wasn’t easy especially since I’ve been going to him for ages and he knows my hair and my temperament pretty well. But I just couldn’t handle his nonsense like making me wait at the salon while he went TV shopping or threatening to cancel my appointment when I was 10 minutes late. The last straw was when he gave me some lame attitude when I complained that he had cut my hair too short. I decided enough was enough. Friend or not, I was taking my money elsewhere.

So some 48 weeks ago, I went to another hairstylist after sifting out all your recommendations for me on my Facebook page. To be fair, I was very satisfied with the first haircut. But that was it. The next few haircuts were mediocre and I felt he couldn’t meet my expectations that well. However, I was still willing to go back to him on account that he and his staff are not so talkative and I don’t get annoying, unsolicited comments about my hair (or lack of). But the last haircut was a disaster. He had cut it too short and stepped it too much. It was a dread looking at the mirror every day. Although it has since grown longer and is looking better, I was quite shaken by the entire snip.

Okay, shaken is a bit of an exaggeration and I’m just being emotional. But being fellow women, I think most of you can emphatize with my feelings. My hair is my crowning glory and there is no way I can justify a bad haircut. While I can go back to him and correct him on the way he should have cut my hair, I just feel that it is a bit of a hassle because he obviously did not take into consideration my hair texture and head shape when he last did the job. So how can I trust him with my hair going forward? I mean, I can’t be taking my hair for a gamble each time I go for a haircut right?

I’m currently wondering if I should find another hairstylist but I always feel both vulnerable and fearful about new, unknown hairy territories. I don’t want to deal with another new hairstylist. More importantly, I’ve come to an age where I cannot stomach another negative comment about the state of my hair any more. Or rather, I don’t want to. Come on! Why should I pay someone money and have that person or anyone else assisting him or her point out what I do not like to hear?

The current question is: should I stay or should I go? I’d even toyed with the idea of returning to my ex-hairstylist. Well, only momentarily. I don’t think I can bring myself to it. The idea of having been treated like a doormat still irks me. So no, I’m never gonna turn back. But what then? I really need to decide quite soon. Like in two weeks’ time. And I hope I’ll come to some wise decision sooner.

Meanwhile, I can’t believe I just banged out 636 words on this hairy topic. I know it sounds really inane to some of you but for me, this is a big deal. If you’ve read till now, thanks for bearing with me. Thanks for allowing me to be emo. And oh, while it was a dread looking at my hair during the past two months, I wasn’t moody. I just lived every day as if I had a good hair day. (#k8SjZc9Dxk_#k8SjZc9Dxk)

    Hey Sesame,

Sorry to hear that you are not happy with the second stylist. If I remember correctly, that was my recommendation. You should do what you feel is right. If he is not listening to you, you should go with someone else. Hopefully, it will be third time lucky! I am still going to that same stylist and happy with my hairstyle. All the best!

  2. Sesame says:

He listens but I don’t know what happened the last time. ?

Don’t feel bad for expressing your bad experience with your hair stylist. I have had such horrible experiences over the years. Bad cuts, bad color, inconsistency is what I can’t deal with. You will find a good one. You’ll see. I found a great one that I have been going to for 10 years. The color is always beautiful and I love the cut. Also , he treats me respectfully . They should treat us well. After all they depend on our business for their livelihood.

i havent found my perfect stylist ? i wish i could just keep my hair long without having to ‘test out’ with different stylists every time.

one thing i don’t like is how they assume my hair will not go haywire or in ugly curl when they snip my hair short if i don’t rebond. it looks damn good after the cut & blow dry, then i suffer immediately after a wash ? my hair curls so bad that it’s unbearable when it’s short, and i am determined this time not to rebond my hair anymore, because when it out grows, it’s a disaster to look at the bump too! it’s a vicious cycle.

gosh, i envy girls with naturally obedient hair that looks good in any natural way!

what a coincidence, I am also being overly dramatic over hairy issues these days.. 1. the facial hair 2. my grey hair.. .. quite frustrated that my henna order from mehandi.com is still not delivered to me… I ordered them on 18 October.. I ordered from Iherb 21 October (Received acknowledgement from iherb the same day including the parcel tracking number.. by 25 October its already here in Singapore).. I have been chasing Mehandi via email and still no clue where my order is.. not even a tracking number…

  6. Lanie says:

just received my henna from mehandi.com… I was expecting it to come last Friday/Saturday though.. so I could do my hair coloring on the weekend.. as I have a very important meeting to attend tomorrow.. sigh! never mind.. I will just act as if I have a good hair day too…

    CheerS!

    Hi xin,
I have naturally wavy hair that has a mind of its own too, and it is wavy even at a boyish length. The only way out for me is to be a slave to my hairdryer– which I have been for the past few years, but I have finally made peace with my hair after over 20 years of struggling with it. Fortunately, short hair means I can finish the blowdrying in 5 minutes with a suitably powerful hairdryer. Having said that, finding a hairstylist who understands your hair’s unique temperament and can work with it is very important. Personally, if a hairstylist tells me to rebond my hair when I asked for a cut, I will leave, because I take it that he doesn’t know how to work with my hair. To me, how the hair grows out is a testimony of the stylist’s skills. I too, for many years, envied girls with obedient hair that they can wash and wear without any styling effort, but I have since accepted that hair with character aren’t half bad too (despite the trouble) once you have found a way to live with it. Don’t give up trying!

I have been going to QB House but they had increase their rate to SGD12 since this year. I’m okay with it so far. Their stylist are still able to give me a decent cut for my hair. I have been to EC House (SGD10) before but I have some unpleasant experience with one of their stylist. I was still sporting long hair at that time & I told her to cut just 1 inch for me to take a look at how it is before cutting it shorter. She abruptly cut about 2 inches (or more) & that irks me. I actually threw my temper on the spot at her as I was getting a haircut for CNY. I wrote to EC House to complain later but they do not even bother to response. I am not sure if I am just being petty but although I am only paying SGD10 for the haircut, that doesn’t gave their stylist reasons to be shoddy. At least, I can still rely on QB House.
Enough about me, I think you should be adventurous & try out another stylist. Keep on reminding the stylist to trim a bit first to let you take a look before letting him/her go ahead & cut your hair for you

It’s true. Many of us tend to keep quiet when we get the wrong end of the stick. I didn’t voice out in part because I thought the hair would look all right after 2 weeks but who knows it takes 2 months.

  10. Sesame says:

Ya, like me, I envy those with thick hair that can go with any hairstyle.

  11. Sesame says:

iHerb is pretty reliable. That’s why I like them.

  12. Sesame says:

Glad your order arrived. I must go and check this brand out too.

  13. Sesame says:

QB and EC do have some good hairstylists but the problem is, you can’t really specify who to cut your hair most of the time. My son gets his hair cut there. So does my husband now.

  14. Chenyze says:

Perhaps you can consider mine? I got to Creme at Square 2 and my stylist is William. You might have to wait a little bit for your appointment if they’re not done with the previous customer but he’s very patient, very earnest, and is always happy share extra tips.

I generally go for a bob but most of my previous stylists were such that it will take me a week or two to get used to the haircut – I usually don’t walk away from the salon feeling like I really like my haircut. However, William is actually able to do my hair such that I’m happy with the cut straight away! He even tried to show me how I can trim my own fringe but I’m too chicken for that. x= Email/DM me if you want the number!

I recently said goodbye to my hairstylist simply because I couldn’t afford her any more. Now I started dying my own hair and it hasn’t turned out as bad as I feared, it’s actually really quite good!!

hi mandy, you have a point. if the stylist have to persuade me to get rebonding, it means that they aren’t good enough for my hair after all right ? it’s hard to believe them sometimes because it will look good after blow drying and all, but once i step out from the shop, my nightmare begins. my hair is long overdue for a cut or trim and i dont know where to go!

Wow! Looks like you have penned my thoughts. My hair cut is loooong overdue. I dont know where to go. I dont have my fav hairstylist. My previous one was on the verge of being my fav but he screwed up my last hair cut. I guess they do put special efforts in the first few cuts and they start to take you for granted and do just a mediocre job. I am as clueless as you. Sigh!

Funny, I just switched to a new hair stylist. It was very nerve wracking and very hard for me to do. I just get nervous about these things.
Anyway, I am very happy I did..my new stylist gave my hair a great new style and I look years younger ?

  20. Sesame says:

Thanks Chenyze. I’ll probably give William a try. ?

  21. Sesame says:

I color my own hair too. But I need a hairstylist to cut my hair still.

  22. Sesame says:

Okay, I’ll go take a look. But I’m quite happy with Surya really.

    Great for you! ?

Hello! Someone in my Facebook group shared this website with us so I came to give it a look. What a great story about your hair. It can be nerve racking to look for a new hairstylist I know but don’t be afraid.

Ask friends who’s hair you love. Always pay attention to how the person treats people. This is important. You must be relaxed and comfortable. Sometimes you have to take the leap of faith. It sucks when it sucks but hey it’s hair, it grows back lol!

*HUGS* I can imagine how hurtful it is when people add salt to the wound! We all have our vulnerabilities and we shouldn’t have to pay good money to have the wound cruelly-seasoned. The problem with most stylists is that they have a huge ego and we end up trying not to hurt their sensitive souls. *roll eyes*

Cos we’re in a sense, under their mercy! No sane woman wants to incur their wrath and get a bad haircut. What a shame and yes, *roll eyes* too.

Really, a bad hairstylist is such a pain! It is good that you got rid of him! I think you should check out references from friends to find a new stylist. It worked for me well. True that our hair is our crowning glory and we better do everything to make it look good and healthy. My hair is wavy and thick and needs to maintain regularly or else it will be a mess. And finding a decent stylist is hard to do, lucky me I found one and he takes good care of my hair. ?
